Admittedly, this was my first time trying Nepalese food, but I love Indian and I know they're a little similar, so thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did, because the food was fantastic. The restaurant itself is nicely decked out. It's got a slight modern warehouse type feel to it, but there's ample room (but with small tables), and beautiful smells coming from the kitchen. I ordered the Pan Fried Sekuwa, which are pieces of chicken thigh fillets marinated with mustard leaves, yoghurt, garlic, ginger and cumin. It was so delicious and came with a mini refreshing salad of cucumber and onion and tomato etc. A really good start to the meal. Following that, I ordered the Chicken Curry for my main (which came with butternut pumpkin) and plain rice. It was beautiful and fresh and while the chicken wasn't as tender as the entree, it was still packed with flavour and texture. The service was good. Food came out all together and correctly and within a reasonable time frame, and the prices are worth it for what you get. Street parking is plenty along that side and portion of Waverly Road and I really look forward to trying it again another time.

Prices are very reasonable and the choice of wines good. Parking is readily available on Waverly Rd and a booking was not necessary when we visited. It was a pleasure not to be bothered by piped music so we all had a good conversation in a friendly atmosphere with attentive staff. The flavours were delicate and interesting. The nan breads were a treat. So treat yourself to a night out at Nepal Dining Room.

They have a good variety of both meat and vegetarian dishes, and they have the right levels of spice (not too hot, not too mild, and nice and subtle) like good Subcontinental food has. The atmosphere in the place is very appealing too. It has a nice feel to it. I certainly intend to go back!

Nepalese food is similar to Indian cuisine - there are spicy dishes and the same sorts of flavours come through. I like testing out the vegetarian options and have fallen in love with the dishes containing chickpeas (bizarre I know), they seem to taste better when they are covered in spicy curry. There are several venues around the city but seeing as I like Bridge Road I usually dine at their café there. The atmosphere is really laid back so its perfect for large groups of people and children too, I'm always impressed by the numbers of families that come to Gurkhas for some tasty Nepalese food - mind you, the kids always seem to be well behaved. Expect great service and knowledgeable suggestions about what to choose off the menu from the wait staff.

This Nepalese restaurant has been on Chapel Street longer than I have and already had a good crowd when I arrived a little after 6pm, so presumably it's doing something right. The waitress gave me a wicker basket with a couple of papadums and a little bowl of spicy dipping sauce as soon as I sat down which was really tasty and quite hot (curry based I think, not chilli). For entree I ordered the tandoor prawns. This was a skewer of six pieces on a bed of saffron rice and a side salad. Very tasty, and very good value at just $12. Speaking of good value, they have cocktails on the drinks menu at an average price of $9 each so I ordered a Brandy Alexander to sip on while I checked out the rest of the menu. This is pretty extensive but as I hadn't eaten here before I ordered the Mixed Entree Platter for $22. This included a lamb cutlet, Momo (steamed chicken dumplings with a spicy dipping sauce - yum), Pakauda - potato fritters served with a plum sauce - and another potato dish called Singada which are curry puffs served with plum and tamarind sauce. This was washed down with a Gorkhali - honey, Frangelico, Bailey's, Creme de Cacao and cream - which for $10.90 was one of the more expensive cocktails. And yes, it tasted as good as it sounds. Can't imagine why it's taken me so long to get to Gurkha's, but I'll definitely be back. Lovely food, cosy atmosphere, good service and cheap cocktails. What's not to like?

As we were just after a warming dinner to eat with a movie we weren't particularly exploratory with our orders- just a lamb madras for myself and a chicken korma for my friend, of course with the ubiquitous side orders of naan and rice. The food itself was fantastic, mine was really pungent with a wonderfully rich and thick sauce. It was spicy enough for me (i'm a lover of hot food) without being overpowering... Also, unlike a lot of Indian food, it wasn't overly oily or fatty, although as the meal contains coconut milk it had a lovely creaminess to it. The lamb itself was delicious, tender to the point of flakiness so i could break the larger chunks down easily with my spoon. The overall serving size was generous without being ridiculous. To add to this the (plain) naan we ordered was stretchy, not too oily, and surprisingly tasty. The rice was plain but perfectly prepared. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because beyond a little taste test of my friend's korma (thoroughly enjoyed) I only tried the one dish. Also there was a slight moment of confusion when my friend asked for a menu to take home and was told they didn't have enough left to give him one... Huh? Anyway, if you're looking for a take- away curry, this place is definitely recommended. Unsure as to the quality of the restaurant experience but judging by the decor (see photo), well stocked bar and quality of the food I'm going to see for myself soon.

However, as it turns out, there is little difference between Nepalese and Indian food, not that that is a bad thing because I do love my vindaloo (even if it is only because I am a big Red Dwarf fan). What I did discover though is that when you are the only person in the restaurant you end up getting really pampered, which is not necessarily a bad thing, though it can be a little annoying when somebody comes up to you every five minutes to ask if your are enjoying your meal. Still, I did quite like the place, and it certainly has a nice atmosphere.

We had a booking but the place wasn't really that busy - they have happy hour from 5-7pm so I think the place had emptied out after that. The menu has a section called "The Bucket List" which is a bit weird, everything is sold in grams (e.g. you can choose between a 150g or 300g portion) and you feel a bit like you need to order a few things to build up a whole meal. I went for the lemon butter prawns (300g) as well as some Asian slaw. The food arrived but not quite at the same time so there was a little bit of an awkward wait but nothing too dramatic. My prawns arrived as a 150g portion as there'd been a mix up but another 150g arrived not long after which was good. Overall, I really liked the prawns - perfectly cooked, nice and juicy and lots of the cooking sauce to dip bread into. The Asian slaw was ok - it was definitely missing something to make it remarkable. Service was a little mixed and there seemed to be a weird dynamic going on between our waitress and the manager - I'm not sure if the waitress was on trial but it seemed like the manager was checking up on her. No big deal. Overall, I liked this place and from looking at their website it seems like brunch/lunch is their thing more than dinner, so I would consider heading back for that next time I'm in Melbourne.
