My wife and I love this gym. It's a beautiful facility, very well looked after. I always see one of the employees keeping the men's locker room stocked and mopped. The machines all look new and well maintained. The staff is very professional and easy approached. The little cafe stocks healthy drinks and even entrees so you don't undo your entire workout. Crowded Weekday Mornings and Evenings. Crowded Saturday Mornings and Evenings. Crowded Sunday Mornings and Evenings. The only time you can get your equipment is a few hours after 12 noon until 3pm. This used to be a cool place to workout but has gotten extremely crowded and hence pointless. If you can't get the equipment when you need them, its not worth it. I don't shower here coz its crowded. This club used to be Elite when it was Club H. Now its a Below Average club. read more

I recently joined base and i love it. People told me that just because you pay a lot of money for a gym doesn't mean you'll go...but base showed me thats not true. It is expensive but well worth the money. It is so nice it makes you want to go workout! There are many classes available with nice/knowledgeable instructors and many different time slots.There are so many machines i have never had an issue with them being full! Erin Loizides and Cara Pirozzi were awesome with helping me sign up and get the complimentary training session! Even to the point of emailing me back quickly with parking info lol I would say this gym is definitely worth it! read more

Brutally HOT/ Stale environment as of fall 2018 This gym used to be great. With the new staff- they have changed the workout conditions and it is brutally warm. There is hot air pumping through the building since they shut down the A/C. When I made an inquiry I got the run around. Sad because it used to be awesome. read more

I joined a different gym when I moved to Jersey City which was less expensive but quickly canceled because it was always packed and the machines were in poor shape. I have been a member of Base for 8 years now. I started when it was called club H. This gym gets better year after year. They always upgrade their equipment and constantly add more diverse and challenging classes. I spend a great deal of time at this gym. The people here are like family. They go out of their way to accommodate myself and other members. This place is like equinox at half price. The owner Craig and his manager Erin are two of the nicest people I have ever met. I am very dissapointed in the customer service at this gym. I went today for a trial workout with the anticipation of joining after working out and getting a tour of the facility. I had heard that you get your parking receipt validated to have it paid for so at the end of the workout I said I wanted to join but was concerned about the parking. The salesperson took her time not concerned in the least about my parking. As I have never dealt with this issue before I figured it was not a big issue so I continued to sign 5 different things to join for $1,600 for the year. I was super excited and left to my car with the validated parking pass. When I got to the booth I gave them my ticket and they said that will be $10 and I was like I am 10 minutes over as I was just joining the gym and they said yea nothing we can do...... I went into the gym to tell the sales lady Erin Loizides that I just had to pay $10 because she wanted 5 signatures from me to take my $1600 and she said there is nothing we can do........ I said you can be a human being and think how you would feel if you had just signed a contract for $1,600 for a year membership and then you got banged out for $10 because of her and the gym. I left and said wait a second, I have 7 days to cancel this as per the email and the contract so I emailed them and said cancel my contract! I hope the $10 was worth it! I don't know what happened to customer service but apparently it doesn't exist at this gym, or at least Erin wasn't taught this characteristic. It is pretty interesting as if you think about it, what is the difference between a Retro Fitness and Base. Equipment is actually better at Retro but the price is 6x higher. Genius marketing..... This business model will not last as from what the sales girl Erin Loizides told me it didn't make it in Hoboken either, formerly known as Club H. The gym business is a saturated bussiness and one off gyms have 0 continuity. How can you justify joining a gym at this price when you will have to be a member of Equinox as well in the city for $220 as most people work in NYC that live in Jersey City. The gym is one of the best gyms in Jersey City but that is not saying much as there is no competition. It will change very soon and we will see the gyms begging for your business then. With a profit of $1600 for me to join with a free email that was sent out to me to have paid $10 for my parking fiasco would have been a small cost and still left the gym with $1,590. Go figure..... How can you have a positive gym experience in such a terrible atmosphere where you are getting pinched for $10. read more

Pros: Usually enough machines to find something and half of their customer service is decent. Cons: There is a girl at the desk who is "close" with the owner- She is a little rough around the edges and asking her questions or to reset their wifi is not my favorite. I always hope someone else is at the counter. The wi-fi is very unreliable (do not plan on studying / working on a machine or bringing your ipad without encountering frustration and wasting time trying to log on only to have it fail often) I was at Equinox and Crunch for years and always had great access. I go out of my way to pay for subscriptions to access at the gym and make sure my ipad is charged just to have their comcast fail me for sometimes weeks at a clip. The A/C situation is also really inconsistent. Some days it is perfect others it can be really stale and hot by the cardio. If everything worked (if they invested in verizon fios, and improved their customer service to a friendlier approach, this would climb to a five star review fast) With their cost though, If I had more local choices, I would go to a more affordable spot where I could be more forgiving. I am considering ending my membership once I find something that follows through on their claims to have wifi and the customer service you are greeted with from the get go. read more

The classes are top notch, the facility and equipment are all brand new, the front desk and customer service are all so nice and friendly...it's just the best. For what you get it's totally worth the price (it's not even that expensive, more than half of what equinox is and you get so much more). Love love love Base!! read more

I have been a member here for almost 3 years. The facility is great; I never had an issue with the equipment, locker room or spa. I've taken classes and had a personal trainer for all three years of my membership; my trainers were wonderful! They pushed me, made me work hard, were knowledgable, engaging and I saw results. The reason for the low rating and the cancellation of my membership is the owner. He could not care less about the members at his gym. He's well aware that he has a monopoly on this industry as the owner of the only gym like this in the area. He's rude, speaks badly about members to other people, condescending, makes inappropriate comments to members (he did it to me once and I shut him down). I reached the point where I refuse to continue to patronize and fund a business being run by someone like him. If you can utilize the gym and manage to fly under his radar and not interact with him then it's a great place. However, he pretty much ties the hands of the people who work for him so if you plan to use any services there you'll interact with him at some point. read more

If I could give this place 10 stars I would!! It's AMAZING. From the fresh eucalyptus towels to the classes to the wide variety of gym equipment. This place has everything you need and then some! When I joined I was worried that the prime times would be too packed, but it's not. After work is definitely busier than the mornings but it's still manageable, you can still get a great workout in without having to wait around for equipment. The classes are my favorite. They fill up FAST and you have to sign up online for the best ones but they are worth it. And they work for all levels, you don't have to be a pro to participate. I only began my fitness journey a month ago and have taken a bunch of the classes. The instructors are great and make you work hard but don't push you to the point where you feel uncomfortable. There are multiple areas to stretch, you never feel like you don't have enough space to get everything in. I'm already seeing changes in my body and am SO glad I joined this place. read more

I've been going to Base for over a year now and I LOVE IT! The classes are amazing, there is someone at the front desk always to help, the food/shake bar is delicious, everything is always clean and towels/products are always stocked. What else could you ask for? In my opinion the classes that are offered are so worth the membership cost and will be very worth your time. I also signed up for the personal training with Igor for a long time and it was THE BEST. Igor was an incredible trainer that helped transform my body and was completely flexible about my schedule when needed. 6/5 if it was possible!!! I wanted to go to a nice gym since the one in my building is kind of crappy. I went to Base and it was awesome. Very spacious and that made it feel not so crowded(it was Saturday morning). They had classes I could have done, a spa I would go to, free weights, machines! It was awesome! Everyone was vey friendly and everything was very clean! Great vibes from the overall experience!! Definitely will be looking more into it read more

I walked in, mentioned to the woman at the front desk that I was looking for a local gym, and asked if I could do a one day trial to get an impression of the gym. She said they don't do free trials at all. I don't think I've ever been to a gym in my entire life that didn't let you at least try it out once before joining. Simply looking around does not give you a gauge of the wait time for equipment, condition of the machines, etc. But I guess I'm just supposed to fall in love and immediately sign up as soon as I walk through the door? Very strange policy, not very conducive to signing up new members. read more

I recently joined the gym and enlisted in the Base Camp classes. I have enjoyed taking crossfit classes in the past and thought I would give this a shot. Jen (the head trainer of this class) is beyond amazing. Her energy and knowledge make the class fun and kick ass. This is by far the best gym I've ever belonged to. read more

Word to the wise : Go over your contract with a fine tooth comb. Make sure you get everything they agree to in writing. I was charged for a membership I had been told verbally by their manager was cancelled and adjusted in their computer system. When I complained, I was told by the owner that if the manager did not put it in writing - it never happened. I never received a refund. Beware. The classes at Base are really amazing! Where else can you go in jersey city that will have spinning class, yoga class, barre class, Zumba class and crossfit classes! Erica's barre class is amazing, she makes it such a fun experience with great music which changes at every class. Susan and George classes are great as well! My only issue with this gym is that it is so incredibly dusty, I'm sure it's hard to keep it clean with the numerous people that come here but still I wish they improved this - I need to take allergy meds before I come here. Another thing: steer clear of their massages, I decided to treat myself to one and it was awful because the massage room was not insulated so I heard blasting workout music throughout the entire massage. Definitely NOT relaxing!!!! read more

I have been going here for about a year now. Previously I was going to small group classes and classes similar to soulcycle (which I LOVED). What sold me on joining this gym was the free 2 hour parking. The price is a lot cheaper then NYC too. I rarely take any classes here. Mainly because the good classes require online sign up and that is just annoying. I still plan on trying more classes. My favorite part is the large empty fitness room where the classes are held. It's a perfect spot to workout with more privacy and access to free weights, kettle bells, etc. (when the classes aren't in session) the best time to go is 6am read more

What a turnaround! Since becoming "Base" this gym has gone from a 1 out of 10 to a 9 out of 10. They are so diligent about the consumers needs and work hard to assure that they are met. This gym is light years beyond NYSC and much more convenient than schelping to Equinox. read more

I've been a member of the gym for almost a year (joined when it was still Club H). Since the gym has been under new management I've observed many positive changes. As MItchell pointed out in the previous review, the gym has acquired a lot of new equipment (e.g., all new Spin cycles, 20 new treadmills). There are more attractive group class options to choose from, including the new Base Camp cross-training classes. Having the juice Bar open again is a great addition to the gym for anyone looking for a healthy snack/juice/shake. The staff is certainly very attentive and friendly. Most of them know me by first name, love the personal touch :-) Managers are very receptive to suggestions for new classes and other improvements. They are also leveraging social media and mobile apps to keep members informed of gym announcements. I particularly like their "Base App" for mobile devices, which they always keep very current (including class schedule). I also welcome their monthly newsletter. I look forward to renewing my membership and continue to enjoy all this gym has to offer. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in participating in different group classes, there are great options to choose from! read more

Agree with some of the other posts: it's nice but way too expensive. I paid for an entire year, which made it more affordable but joined another gym closer to work and thought of occasionally getting a day pass at Base. If you're considering this, it was $35. THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS to use a cardio machine for an hour. I don't really consider myself cheap or especially good with money, but something about this just seemed laughably ridiculous. I have been a member at base for the past 3 years. best gym I've been in my life and I have been to many. The staff is the best and knows the members, the instructors are great and fun. The classes are amazing, all sorts of classes. always challenging and they add on new ones ones through the year so you can't even get bored of one! Super clean gym, beautiful locker roons. This gym is very friendly and feels like a family to the members. Kara, Odris, Kevin, Monica, Morgan, Andrew,..and honestly all of the instructors/trainers there are excellent, friendly and always there to help..Base throws BBQs and themed parties for the members also. I have met great people at base and developed friendship. Base also has other services like day care and SPA, massages, Sauna, .. and many more. The equipment is also most recent generation and they add new ones. Not one negative thing to say. It's not even too crowded on peak hours. If you live or work in Jersey City or close by this is the best option you will find. read more

Been coming for almost a year. Consistently clean, updated equipment, tons of classes with engaged, professional instructors. I basically live here because I also use the childminding to watch my daughter for 2 hours every day. I work out and also get some stuff done online. The front staff is so friendly! Best part though are the trainers! Fun, engaging and knowledgeable. Yes it is pricey but I compare it to Equinox in NYC which is about the same. its a health club not a gym so use the amenities - juice bar, lounge, spa, free steam room and sauna, childcare. I absolutely love this gym! It is big enough and has plenty of equipment so it never feels over crowded. It is great for any type of workout and offers a good amount of different classes to fit most wants and needs. I especially enjoy Monday's Burn class with Kara Hermes, which I and many others take religiously. It is a great workout! Kara is an amazing instructor and always keeps it fun and varies it enough that it never gets boring. I also recommend taking any of her other classes, especially if you enjoy spin (it is one of the best I have taken), as I have always had a great time and an awesome workout taking her classes. Like I said, this gym has a lot to offer in terms of great classes and a large variety of equipment. Definitely a higher quality gym than others I have been to. read more

Let me first say that my review is solely based on the cleanliness of the gym (I recently left) The do have great classes Cara provides the best workouts and I was obsessed with her classes. If you don't need to shower here this is certainly the place for you! The main reason I left the gym was bc of the cleanliness of the gym, I was not able to shower with out being grossed out. The have small black flying bugs that live in the shower- look closely you will see them too. The showers just smell like mold and mildew I would never see anyone cleaning in the morning. The do not have some one on the floor cleaning machines as the members hardly clean up after sweating all over the place, if I'm paying equinox prices they need to stay up their game especially since my friend mentioned the price just increased. no cleaning wipes in the boot camp room or base x room Also they do not clean the wood floor in the base x room in the morning it would have hair all over it, other gyms clean before and after classes to try and have a clean place- it just seems like keeping this place clean is not a priority so I needed to move on. read more

Sigh - I want to review this higher but I can't. The locker room is BY FAR the grossest locker room ive EVER been in at a gym. The Mens locker room has wood slats on the floor. WOOD! On top of tile. Wood is a breading ground for bacteria. Not to mention, they clearly do not clean under or pick these mats ups seeing as there is wads of hair, caps from razor blades, and dirt in between these every morning (I'm usually out of the gym before 7am). The shower heads are all different and have been replaced by low end fixtures from the stock shower (attached by extensions & reducers - one of which has RIBBON acting as plumbers tape). Cracked tiles. Glass in the corners have tons of mold and dirt. Simply disgusting - I want to love this gym seeing as the equipment is amazing & the location is great, but I cannot get over the mens locker room showers. They're FILTHY in every aspect. read more

I've been a member since it was club h. Thank goodness for the new owners! I haven't been back since I got the email for base camp. I tried the preview class and it seems interesting enough. The gym as a whole looks great with new and needed upgrades. I haven't tried the other group classes since it's been under new management however the new fitness director Jen seems like she knows what she's doing. I've only just joined this place - 5 days ago - and already love it. Lots of resources and great classes. For such a fabulous place it's not jam-packed, which is amazing but great. I've been to 3 yoga classes and had one PT session in the last 5 days and all of those experiences have been really good. It's very attractive and clean - complimentary towels and toiletries. I think it's really reasonably priced too. I've joined a lot of gyms in my time and this one is probably best-equal that I've belonged to. (The other being Les Mills in Auckland, NZ.) I love that there's a wide range of people here. Some total lookers right through to older people. That's a good sign! read more
