My husband and I started working with Bartz landscaping in April 2022. I interviewed 10 companies regarding installing a patio in the backyard of our Urbana townhouse. Bartz was able to quickly send someone out to give me a quote. He was really nice and energetic, but he never got back to me with a price. A few weeks later, I emailed Bartz to see if they were still interested in the job and was informed that the person who had given me the quote no longer worked for the company and my initial quote had been lost when he left. The owner came to my house and gave me a new quote. I was really impressed with their social media, professional website, and for a fee, they do a really nice 3D rendering so you can see what your backyard will look like when completed. We decided that doing 2 smaller patios with some 1-3" rocks in between the patios would be more cost effective than one huge patio, which is what we really wanted. I was super clear that I wanted the pavers from the garage to the door to have some sort of grout or be spaced really close together so we wouldn't be kicking up rocks when we walked across them. I was told the grading of the yard would be very subtle to allow for drainage, but we would not even notice it. We worked together, and after a few changes to the rendering, we all seemed satisfied with the ideas and with the price. We were told our patio would be completed by the 4th of July. I think had everything gone smoothly, it would be a 5 star review. It is now October 24th and my patio has still not been completed. The initial patios were completed during a huge rainfall during the 2nd day of installation, so a lot of the poly sand washed away. The slope of the yard is way more extreme than we talked about with the walkway to the garage and the rocks actually being much higher than the patio. The rocks we received for between the patios were much larger than 1-3" rocks and they were so full of dust that the rains turned that dust into mud piles in my yard (I would have not gone with rocks had I been told this could be a problem and I would not have gone with rocks had I known they would be so huge). They were not able to put any poly sand between my walkway pavers, so they put rocks in between the pavers that were too big and got kicked around when we walked across them. They used a metal grid around the patios to secure the pavers that I have never seen on any other patio and it looks terrible. But, whatever, we were just going to have to deal with that. We decided just to deal with the huge sloping as well, but we did ask them to redo the poly sand, remove some of the larger 5-9" rocks that are difficult to walk across (and just look ugly), and to fix the rocks between the pavers. They happily came back to do all that and they used gravel in between the pavers. Not what I wanted, but less rocks are being kicked around when we walk across the pavers so it was a satisfactory solution. Then more rain came and the poly sand washed away. Again. I contacted them and was told a rep from the poly sand company would come and address the situation. That appointment got canceled, so they were just going to order a "stabilizer" to be applied to the poly sand. I received an email that said the product never arrived and they canceled my appointment. That was a week ago. I have not been contacted again. The poly sand gets more and more washed away with every rain. Let me be clear, the owner and the staff from Bartz are VERY, VERY nice and professional. Every single person I worked with was very nice and pleasant. They are all in their early 20's and excellent with technology, social media and with the 3D renderings. However, they are not excellent at problem solving or being realistic with customers. They are terrible at following up with an unhappy customer and we just continue to get unhappier the longer we go with our patios being unusable. Had I been told upfront that using rocks in between the patios was a bad idea because they would collect mud and be difficult to walk across, I would have gone with gravel or spent the extra money on grass. When I inquired about doing some flagstone or artificial turf to replace the rocks, the extra price was absolutely insane. Again, this could have been a 5 star review but it has been over 6 months since my initial patio was installed and we can't use the patios. We can't walk safely across the rocks in between the patios. We paid them $12,000 and we continue to have our poly sand wash away with each rain. We can't let our pets on the patios because they like to lay on the pavers and they become covered in crumbly poly sand. I am extremely frustrated by the lack of communication. Sending an email to cancel an appointment just does not suffice after 6 months of being unhappy with landscaping we spent a lot of money on. At this point I wish we had gone with literally any of the other companies I interviewed and I could not recommend Bartz to anyone I know. read more

I used Bartz Landscaping for a landscaping project in 2022. He did fine work. His great reputation ended on March 30, 2023. On March 11, Sean Bartz came to my house to review my yard and discuss what I wanted done for 2023. Several of the Japanese grasses he planted last year never took and the first thing we talked about was how he would "gladly replace them" since his company moved them from one spot and they promptly wilted. We reviewed the list and he said "I need until Tuesday (which would have been 14th)" to get back to you. As of March 30th, I've heard NOTHING. I have texted Sean multiple times and I called his office twice and weas told I'd have my estimate by the end of the day each day I phoned in. And I GOT nothing. Meanwhile, I gave his colleague his number and he talked to her about fixing her yard the same day. Why was I ghosted? I have no idea. My yard is small and if you look at his site, it's all about huge paver jobs. I just don't know. But ghosting a paying customer who you A) Owe plants to, B) have gotten referrals from and C) gotten great reviews from in the past as well as kudos and likes on all social media because you want to support them, is a pretty crappy way to treat clients. So when you promote your mission statement as being a customer-centric company and you ghost an existing client, I tend to think you are a fraud. Good luck dealing with this guy. He sure does bring the charm. but he will treat you as if you're dead when he wants to and he's not even brave enough to speak his truth. read more

Bartz Landscaping Co. has completed multiple types of work at my house: Deck replacement, stonework patio, major landscaping project. They also clean and refresh the landscaping each fall and spring. They are excellent at their work. They are attentive to my questions and concerns. They check in/out with text messages to alert me of when and what work being done. Only Use Sean Bartz for Simple Jobs! Sean is a nice guy and means well. He is just way over his head when it comes to anything more than simple moving some dirt and/or plantings. We contracted this spring for a couple things, see below. 1) Bury one down spout and have rainwater empty out lower in the yard -- Simple right? Well when completed the angle of the pipe is flat or zero degrees so water never completely drains out. So now we have algae and a mosquito infestation from the stagnant water. Also, they didn't take the piping far enough down the yard, so I had to re-route our walkway path and slate further away from the ending, so not to worry about anyone tripping across the piping and ending... 2) Second drain spout -- was to run out through front yard to the curb which he insisted was easy and legal. We insisted on getting a permit and after months of his delaying and then later Covid-19, our permit was denied. So, we have a stupid pop-up drain at the end of our yard that also doesn't drain out completely. Repeated calls to have the pop-up changed to exit on to the driveway apron lip have gone ignored. 3) Replace our existing front walkway and replace it with bricks / pavers -- Two pallets of pavers were delivered. One pallet was multicolored, and the second pallet has Autumn Blend, the color we contracted. Three workers used the pallet of multicolored (maybe because it was physically closer to the workmen as the first pallet) and many had chips and imperfections. We were told the pavers would be installed tightly together. The workmen did not have a plan or design. The foreman had left them to figure it out. A book of paver photos was shown to them by us and they picked one they had previously used or known. The grout to be added was after a few rainstorms and weeks passed before a very dry day and very dry pavers were ready for the grout, or whatever it is called for pavers. The current front walkway looks like a patchwork of colored pavers, instead of the autumn blend contracted color. A whole pallet not used. 4) Vision - Sean and company must be new to this line of work. He suggested and built a berm in our backyard to direct run off water to a better path to a drain. Afterwards we realized that it was a bad idea and poorly looking, so we re-worked his berm COMPLETELY for a more subtle and eye pleasing design which also functions even better. 5) Oh, forgot to mention, the underground drains when completed were connected incorrectly so when water ran down through the piping, it bubbled out of the joints! We had them fix by reversing the joints, this was before Sean decided to stop returning our phone calls. So, to end on a positive note, if your project is simple dirt moving and/or simple plantings where you can direct and manage every step, you'll be fine... read more

We didn't receive a contract, and now they don't respond to multiple texts, emails, or phone messages. No idea what happened, but we were ghosted. I found Sean Bartz through Andy's list I made an appointment for him to come over and give me an estimate. Very nice sweet talker I wanted Side planned in my front yard and then help with taking care of it the first year. Sean assured me that that will get could be done very easily and then the waiting began it took him six weeks to come do the job and after that I never saw him or heard from him again I was getting brown spots and I called and I called and he absolutely would not answer his phone this went on for four months until my grass is totally ruined. My experience with Sean Bartz and Bartz Landscaping was nothing but top-rate and phenomenal. Sean was very responsive and set up an appointment to come meet me just a couple of days after I initially called. He provided me an initial cost range on site and followed up with the proposal. The pricing was very reasonable for the work. Sean was patient as we worked through some back and forths between my wife and I on what exactly we wanted. Sean was able to fit us in on a tight timeframe and completed the job a day earlier than he initially thought he could come out which worked better with our schedule. He and his three employees were professionally dressed and did great work. Their clean up was very thorough and left our backyard looking like it was out of a magazine.
