I've had many fond memories over the years with my family visiting Barton Orchards and have made it a family tradition to go every year. Barton Orchards is most definitely a great escape from city life but when you're suddenly reminded of how discriminating and obnoxious people can be, it can most certainly take away from the experience. While I understand there are rules and regulations with each operating business, the employees trained to enforce them should also strive to create a positive atmosphere for its customers. Because after all, the success of a business is measured by its numbers. The number of repeat customers, sales and employees a business have. When a business such as Barton Orchards fail to realize this, it's a clear indicator of how little they value their customers.
While my experience with the majority of Barton Orchards employees have been nothing short of amazing, my most recent experience with one of the staff member by the entrance/checkout tent was not only humiliating but will most likely deter me from revisiting Barton Orchards. Last Tuesday around 4:45 p.m, my family and I left Barton Orchards with a bushel of apples, saddened and with a heavy heart. It wasn't our first time apple picking but it could very well be our last. While we were apple picking, we noticed a lot of good apples on the ground and figured it shouldn't go to waste. We decided to pick a few and alert one of the employee passing by on his ATV that they should do something about those apples and he assured us that they are gathered and put into wooden bins near the corn maze for people's taking. Having already bought two 1/2 bushel bags, I decided to head over to the bins to get a handful of apples.
When leaving the orchard, we were approached by a staff member who immediately gave us a dirty look and proceeded to bag and weigh the apples that I had gotten from the wooden bins. Bewildered by this, I then asked if they charged for apples that were in the wooden bins. What happened next was not only unbelievable but unforgivable. She rolled her eyes at me and angrily informed me that they charged EVERYTHING and that it wasn't free. Shocked by her demeanor, I tried to remain composed and politely explained that I was not aware that the apples in the wooden bins were for sale and had I known beforehand I would have gladly purchased another two 1/2 bushel bags to place them in. She raised her voice and scolded me as if I was less than a child, "You pay for what you pick, what don't you get?", "What do you want from me now, it's not free, your total is $20". I figured it was more logical to purchase another 1/2 bushel bag then to spend more for less apples and so I asked her to ring me up for one 1/2 bushel bag instead of the regular bag that she weighed the apples in. Her response? "NO. We're closing up now and you won't have time to pick more apples", "Do you not understand English!?". "So....are you gonna pay for the apples you picked or NOT!?!" Mind you, there were other customers with children around who witnessed this and could not believe it either. It took every ounce of my being to hold back the tears I felt were ready to fall. I was not only in a state of disbelief but in complete shock. Was I not speaking to her in perfect English? How dare she casually belittle me because of how the color of my skin differs from her own. Would she have asked the same question had I been Caucasian? To make matters worse she asked the lady next to us,"They picked these apples and will not pay for them, do you want them?".
I would have never thought a family run business such as Barton Orchards would tolerate such unacceptable behavior let alone hire a racist employee. The situation could have been handled with care, but it was apparent that I was not given such courtesy when she decided to question whether my family and I were capable of understanding her native language instead of trying to understand how insensitive she was being towards us. In the 8 years that my family and I have made a tradition out of going to Barton Orchards, I have never been so disappointed until that fateful day. It saddens me to give Barton Orchards, a place I once looked forward to visiting less than 5 stars because of one person's lack of judgement but I cannot ignore the social injustice that happened to my family and I on that day. I can only hope that management learn from this calamity and reevaluate their employee's work ethics from hereon. read more
