Another treasure for Bishopthorpe Rd., which is starting to get quite the collection!…read more What helps set this place apart from your average fish and chips place is the dining area in the back... while not large, it's charming and cheap as, well... chips, so it's a great place to pop in if you're looking for a quick meal in the area without breaking the bank. They even do a perfectly portioned, i.e. not tiny, 300 calorie option that is more than enough for me... especially if I've squeezed in a starter! Aside from the usual suspects they have some wonderful calamari, not to be missed if they have them when you're in, and a dessert counter with some goodies. In the end this is a fish and chips place though, so be in the mood for that if your'e popping in. On that front, I won't say they're the best I've ever had sadly, so I wouldn't drive through the city to get them, but they are very good and I've happily been here quite a few times. Ther service in the back is always friendly, but you may have to be a bit patient... given the relatively small size of the place there's not alway a server in there with you, but it's never really caused a problem... just something to be aware of. They also serve beer and cider in the back when you dine in, and I imagine a wine of some variety as well. The front is a standard fish and chip shop, but still a cut above in the theme and cleanliness so it's also worth stopping by for that if you're in the mood and it's en-route to you destination.

Being a foodie from New York City, I was sure to try certain things while visiting a friend in…read more(old) York. Fish and chips was, of course, one of them. My friend said we should get fish and chips from The Fisherman's Wife for good, down-home, classic deliciousness. I'm so glad she did! Of course, we ate it New York City style and ordered them to our door. Which apparently folks out there don't do and my friend was embarrassed to know me but whatevs--people order delivery for everything in NYC from prescriptions to milk to laundry. And it was raining, so being in pajamas made the experience all the more fantastic. We got both the cod and the halibut. I preferred the halibut and my friend preferred the cod, so it worked out perfectly. The fries were interesting--a bit soggy for my taste but I suppose that's par for the course for this dish. If you're looking for a place to grab fish and chips (or if you're fat and lazy like I am and want them delivered to your door to the dismay of your local friend who ended up loving it because let's get real--who doesn't like delivery?), I highly recommend this place.

Tower's Restaurant is the main restauraunt serving the Hilton York, it also includes a bar area,…read moreand an american diner called Applejacks which is only open at weekends. I dined here, despite staying at the Doubletree by Hilton York after being impressed with the menu, location opposite the castle and the fact they offer a 50% discount through Tastecard - it is worth noting they do add 8.5% onto your bill before applying the discount as service charge. For example: A bill is £100 £8.50 will be added £50 is the tastecard discount You pay £58.50 I'm not sure how it works with larger amounts, I just used a '£100' bill to avoid dealing with demon decimals. Inside, the restauraunt feels a little cheap and old fashioned, it doesn't feel like a Hilton at all, it feels more like a lower-class pub for example with a small television, where they do show sports according to a sign. The menu selection was okay, it did have gluten free bread which I was looking for - The selection of sandwiches were slightly more sophisticated than the ham/cheese or tuna mayo I was looking for - I opted for smoked salmon with cream cheese and cucumber so before any discount or service charge this came to £9.50 with chips. After original confusion, I was told the chips were gluten free - they did taste fresh but they were dry and extremley bland (obviously hadn't been seasoned!) and at times hard. The quality of my sandwich also was poor, with a bad cut of salmon which I found to be too thick and had too much skin, also effecting the taste quality. The bread was fresh but even this couldn't save my sandwich. I was shocked to be charged the service charge as it didn't appear to be stated clearly and of course 8.5% is an unusual figure. Good quality bread and reasonably priced after the discount, with my friend enjoying her fish and chips but still a restaurant far from excellent. 2 stars.
