Locks in the change room, easy to reset and use, no need to bring your own

If you're looking for high end boutique fitness, this is it. The first location in Canada, Barry's at Richmond boasts a smoothie bar, towel service, a stretch room with vibrating foam rollers and a basic supply of personal care products in their change rooms (gendered only). COSTS Trying them for the first time at the start of the year, I was able to maximize a 3-class deal, where you pay $60 for the 3, versus $32 for a single. After you do try you first class, they also send you a promo for another deal so long as you redeem it with 48 hours. SPECIALTY Now for the actual workout: Barry touts itself as one of the most intense workouts you'll ever complete, because, instead of doing interval training with dumbells or body weight, you alternate with jogs, runs and sprints on the treadmill to get the heart rate way up and work up a sweat. REGISTRSTION How do the logistics work? When you sign up online and reserve your class, you're given something like a workout stations chart. There's a row of treadmills to the back of the fitness studio, and risers everywhere else. To reserve your spot, you select whether you'd like to begin with sprints or with weights. If it's not your day for cardio, there's also a row of risers that are designated as "double floor", meaning, no treadmill. Whatever you choose, if you're alternating, you start at a riser marker F3 for Floor 3 and when the time comes, you alternate to T3 for Treadmill 3. To get oriented, first timers should show up early to check in at the desk, where staff will also walk you through an illustration of the treadmill controls. WORKOUT Due to the high intensity, the sprints ARE as challenging as advertised. If you get lucky, your instructor may also ask that you use "Dynamic Mode" where the treadmills move via manual power, aka--yep, you guessed it, your legs! The good news for your burning legs is that sprints usually last 30 seconds, which is very tolerable. So while the sprints are tough, it may not be the toughest workout out there if cardio is your jam. If you're intimidated by the sprints and the jog, I'd recommend that you talk to your instructor about modifying the prescribed speed range--jogs are 4-6, runs are 7-9 and sprints are 10+, and start where your comfortable, increasing your pace by 2 levels each time. This is something I've done in my first two classes, because I have a fear of flying off the treadmill and bowling someone over on the riser. When you're on the floor, expect to do anything from leg raises, squats, burpees to resistance training. The moves vary depending on the day of the week, and all classes that day will target lower body for example, with the instructor's choice of moves. Since I became aware of Barry's by way of Asics' free HIIT class taught by Steven Bole, Asics Ambassador and Barry's instructor, I only ended up attending his classes. Out of the three classes I tried, my favourite was his Friday total body. FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT Unfortunately, the only thing I wasn't a fan of, is how squished the changeroom is, proportionate to the volume of folks using the facilities---i.e. someone's glass water bottle was shattered during my first visit because there's one bench in the changeroom and it was doing double duty as a storage and sitting surface. Then again, it's winter, so the squished sense I got will likely vanish in warmer months, when people are not carrying twice the amount of gear around. If you plan on visiting soon and you don't need to change into your gym clothes, there are lockers right outside the fitness studio that are less crowded. Or, since Barry's has a stretch room full of foam rollers etc. try taking your time cooling down and stretching while waiting out the crowd. BONUS If youre a fan of gym selfies, Barry's branding game has got you covered. There's wall decal and gold carpet by the entrance, a mural upstairs plus props for all your gram needs. Finally, if you can't find a class on a stat holiday, chances are Barry's will be open---I've been to an 8am class this past Family Day and someone told me they've visited Christmas day. So next time you don't know what to do on a stat, consider spending part of it at Barry's!

OMG my legs were jelly after my first few classes. This place is no joke! Everyone is super fit at this place and it can be very intimidating at first. Inside the room the red lightning, dark mood and loud music feels like a club which is a great vibe. The workout is intense, lots of running which I personally don't like but after a few classes you do see yourself improve and gets slightly easier. The instructors do push and encourage but the first few classes are confusing, I didn't know the exercises and no one comes to help or instruct you on how to do it properly which is very discouraging. The women's change room is quite small and after work classes are packed, I can't even enjoy the nice amenities they have. But the cooling towels at the end of each workout is great. The classes are not cheap at all so I haven't been back but I can see how these workouts can be very effective. The smoothies at the bottom are amazing so delicious but again not cheap!

I'm hooked! Brendan, Steven, Karina and Michelle are my favourite go-to instructors. Especially Brendan, he's as good as they get. They're all super hype and they use positive reinforcement to get you going! The entire place is super clean and has everything you need after a good sweat.

I tried out the yoga lesson bright and early which was great as it felt more like a one one one. I liked this instructor as she wasn't too pushy or too pretentious (as is my issue with Yoga and I never really gave it a genuine go before for this reason). I felt great after and would probably even sign up for a membership if I worked in the area.

This particular review is for a sculpted yoga class I was able to attend at Equinox. I can't comment on the membership prices since the class was a free event held at Equinox, however, I still had access to the entire gym after the yoga class. This particular location on Bay St. is inside Commerce Court West where you have to take an elevator up to the 3rd floor to access the gym. Upon entering you immediately face the reception area. The lighting of the gym at first when you enter is dark and moody. The areas with the machines are well lit and the yoga room overlooks the corner of Bay/King. The change rooms are big where there are plenty of lockers available. You are able to find the steam room, showers, and washrooms inside the changeroom. There is ample space to change and shower after your workout. Everything I needed for the yoga class was provided. The room is not heated. The spacing of the mats are generous where there is ample room for everyone to move. The instructor we had was clear with her instructions and the workout was fun. After class we were provided with cool refreshing towels. Overall, the gym is clean and provides many amenities with all the workout equipment and machines you can think of. After trying out these gyms, I came to the conclusion that Adelaide Club is the best bang for your buck and also the most conveniently location. I personally like CrossFit style workout and Adelaide's StregthLab program is exactly what I need: a CrossFit style program inside a gym, allowing me to do some Strenth and Conditioning workout, while enjoying the other perks in the club (yoga, cycling, squash, towel services, steam room, etc.) Note that the StregthLab program and squash are not included on the basic membership. Having said that, it's still cheaper than any other CrossFit gyms. Also, another benefits at the Adelaide's StrengthLab program is that the workout are tailored to office athletes; heavy lifts and complex gymnastic movements are not part of the workout (muscle-ups, overhead squat, etc). Another perk of the club is that members get to enjoy reciprocal access to other exclusive clubs across Canada and abroad (private golf clubs, tennis club, other high end gyms in Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary)

It will make you an athlete and there's plenty of equipment and facilities to show for it. Membership is already included in your UofT student tuition, but you can always opt out. The gym features an indoor track/field house, dance and fencing studios, squash courts, and Olympic-sized pools. In spite of the intimidating, performance-athlete-only vibe that emanates from the front door, you can still get inspired by the many jacked powerlifters and kinesiology students that frequent the SCC (Strength & Conditioning Centre). In this glorious facility you'll find at least 5 squat/power racks (grab them while you can), sizeable weights, and lots of cable machines. One of the leg machines are always broken but IMO they're not the important ones anyways. The olympic weightlifting platforms are where the gold's at. If lifting's not for you, then take advantage of the free fitness and conditioning classes on offer, or the paid lessons for finer things like karate or fencing. They're lots of fun, taught by masterful instructors in their field, and open to non-students too. The GOOD: If you like to swim, they do have a nice Olympic size pool. I think this is by far the best aspect of this facility with good dedicated lap swim time. Also, if you like running indoors in winter, they have a 200 meter track. Hours are also quite generous. The BAD: They only have something like 12 elliptical machines...this is for a campus of 80,000 staff and students. Prepare for the hassle of signing up and waiting. The locker rooms are dirty, crowded, and dingy. The weight room is a mixed bag: they have a lot of equipment, but it's undersized for the usage and filled with more meathead types. Not an environment I like. The facility is also very awkwardly spread out without much natural light...kind of depressing. The UGLY: No treadmills, no stairmasters...how can these staples of cardiovascular torture (I mean fitness) be completely absent? Classes like spinning or yoga cost extra and are not cheap. OVERALL, I went here because it was close to my office. The waits and lack of cardio equipment resulted in under-utilization. I also just never enjoyed working out here. I've switched to GoodLife and haven't looked back.
