Dignity Health / Barrows Neurological Institute has horrible service! My doctor there is not listed in there database so my patient portal is useless! I can't message my doctor and I can't make appointments because when I call in they tell me I have to go through Barrows clinic which only has a phone message service and they don't call back for 24-48 hours. I am having constant, debilitating pain. At the end of my doctor's visit yesterday, they told me to go immediately to the front desk and get the next available appointment for treatment, but when I got there, everybody had left for the day 45 minutes earlier. Not only can't I make an appointment, I can't even message my doctor! I've been ghosted by the entire system at Dignity Health and Barrows! Take my advice, DO NOT GO THERE FOR TREATMENT!!!! read more

Form the "we delete referral over 30 days" to really not caring, I gave up and go to someone that hopefully cares to provide service. This place is a ginormous maze. Sheesh!! Some of the arrows are confusing as to where you are supposed to go. But at least they have complimentary valet parking. It's the little things. I had an appointment with Dr Barber for the first time. Appointment was at 8, was told be there at 7:30. Honestly, the maze is totally worth being there so early. They sent me my new patient packet ahead of time so I completed that plus the extra forms I found on their website on how to prepare for your appointment. Things like pharmacy, all your meds, all your Drs. I was even extra nerdy and brought a photo copy of my ID & insurance card. What? I like being prepared. Front staff was nice as were all the others who assisted me during my appointment. Dr Barber was nice & explained his thought process for the diagnosis & treatment. I didn't feel rushed or like I wasn't being heard. I'm hoping the treatment works & the vertigo goes away. read more

Their billing department is horrible. Unprofessional and dishonest. My insurance info was taken at least month prior to office visit. I paid my co pay day of appt. A couple weeks later, I get a bill for $900. I called and left messages asking what my insurance paid. Didn't hear back and got another bill, so I paid $500 of the $900. Left another message. I had a follow up appt (they requested more images), and they called me and said they don't take my insurance. Too long of a story to keep going.... I liked the doctors, but I was nervous to choose them for surgery with the billing mess. Thank God I didn't. I just received another bill... so sad and what if I couldn't actually afford. Dr. Abraham is still horrible, the first MS medicine she put me on made me very sick and landed me in the hospital. At the appointment for me to tell her that for the 5th time as she refuses to read her messages she said "well all my other patients handle that medication fine". I mean have the ER paperwork I told her for 3 doses it was making me sick, I asked for help to get it to work better and was refused and told I didn't need it, I'd be fine, then I landed in the ER. So it doesn't really matter that every other patient does fine with it, clearly plenty don't as there are many MS medicines on the market. She also doesn't recognize me, I found out when she almost ran into me getting into the elevator on my last migraine visit, which is hilarious because the reception staff knows me by first name and so does my migraine team but I guess that shows who really cares right? I can't switch to another Dr on staff, I already asked, I'm not sure what the reasoning is there but you can't and I like the infusion center where I currently get my Tysabri infusions. I also like St. Joseph's and how I'm treated there so I'll just be dealing with it, hopefully I won't have to deal with her too much more now that I'm on a medication that doesn't make me sick and actually works. Based on talking to staff in the other departments it's well known that she's not that great. I still love my Migraine team with Dr. Robblee my migraines are pretty much gone besides the random stress ones and ones from weather and I'm not experiencing side effects from the medications either. The reception team is also excellent, they always try to make things easier and to fit your needs and your Dr's schedules. I would definitely try other Dr's within the Barrow Institute because 2 of the 3 have been very good and understanding. My mom also went to one for a car accident and she was great as well. read more

I went to have an ambulatory EEG put on. That went well until I returned it two days later. The woman who removed it let me leave with a lot of glue still on my scalp. It took two weeks to get all the glue off. I should never have been released until she had removed all the glue. I actually lost hair because of it. It is also going on 3 weeks since I returned the unit and I still don't have the results. I have called the EEG department 3 times to complain and nothing is being done. I also set an message to my Dr and all she said is the results aren't in thank you for your patience. Well my patience has worn thin. This is inexcusable. read more

I am a physician who attempted to refer my wife to this "Institutute" for further evaluation of anomic aphasia (difficulty finding the right words) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (mild memory loss without interruption of daily activities). What a disaster situation. After 30 minutes "on hold" with the Neurology Appointments Office, I was greeted by a receptionist who lacked the empathy and understanding of a cinder block. I asked to speak to a supervisor who was very cordial and professional in expla that my wife could only be seen as a "second opinion" after evaluation by a local neurologist with appropriate studies performed prior to consideration of an "Institute" appointment. I other words they ONLY see patients in second opinion. So the bottom line is: this organization is WORTHLESS unless a patient already has an established diagnosis of which they can opine their "esteemed " second opinion. So, to any patient who seeks their help for evaluation of neurological symptoms without an as yet established diagnosis, FORGET GOING HERE, for they screen in a way to accept only the easiest patients with an established diagnosis. As a surgical subspecialist physIcian, I could only wish I had the opportunity to see patients with an established diagnosis. After all, in that case I would not have think and I could "cherry pick" the patients I see. And then, I could brag about the great results of my treatments. So beware and avoid two concepts of patient care recognized in the surgical world, and applicable to all of health care: (1) The patient will ALWAYS tell you what is wrong and NEVER fail to listen to them. Avoid algorithmic methods of diagnosis which fail to incorporate the patien't's story When physicIans rely upon previous symptom specific evaluations by other providers prior to agreeing to a patient request for further consultation and treatment, they are in fact disqualifying the patient's concerns and are focused upon only their best use of time and reimbursement. How sad! So, at the end of all my efforts, my wife was declined an opportunity to be seen at this facility because she not had a previous neurological diagnosis. Which was the very reason we sought help from the self-described "esteemed " Barrow Neurologic Institute. In the opinion of a broadly educated physician with 39 years of experience, the Barrows Institute is ALL TALK AND HYPE without the credibility of interest in patient care. We were turned down for care here, but in that process I realized this was a Blessing instead of an opportunity. My best advice: STAY VERY, VERY FAR AWAY FROM THIS ORGANIZATION. This place is a joke. I had been seeing a wonderful doctor that came from another hospital for the past 3 years. She transferred to Barrows recently. I have made numerous attempts to make an appointment to see her at Barrows. I've spoken with Marcy( office lady) numerous times and she is a total pain in the rear. She said before she can make an appointment that I need a referral. I explained that this particular doctor that I want to see has been my doctor for the past 3 yrs. She said she still needs a referral. So I had my primary fax a referral over to play her little game. When I called to make an appointment weeks later they now can't find the fax. The office people are totally incompetent. I informed them that it has been faxed over twice and they still can't find it. So I said that I have a paper copy and gave them the referral number and they said they can not take it over the phone. Unfortunately I will have to drive 45 minutes to drop a paper copy off before they will schedule an appointment. The office staff is horrible. The doctors are great but you can't get an appointment to see anyone. read more

I had an appt at the neuro-endocrinology department six weeks ago, with Dr. Monica Rodriguez. The medical center offers valet parking right in front of the entrance. It was so helpful to have extra assistance with the car parking. Dr. Rodriguez was very patient, explaining my MRI very clearly and in detail. I waited 15 years for any doctor to believe what I was experiencing, and when I saw Dr Ortega, I finally felt heard! He confirmed what I suspected I had been dealing with for so long, and he confirmed what Dr Saperstein felt as well. Finally having a diagnosis that explains my complex health issues gives me peace. There's no cure, and no treatment for me due to so many allergies, but at least I know what's happening now and I can move forward. I felt very comfortable with Dr Ortega and his nurse. I always feel respected at this clinic, and I feel that I am a parent not a number. I know everyone can have their own unique experiences, but the ew times I've gone in or had to call in, I haven't had any issues. I only wish they weren't so far away from where I live so I could be a little better about regular check ins for flare ups I'm having. Just to keep better documentation of things. This is the worst organization to get an appointment. Their system relies on FAX technology for both referrals and medical records. My doctor and I have faxed my records multiple times only to be told that Barrow doesn't have them. Very frustrating. ...and there's no workaround: no email, no mail, no texts. FAX only. When I found out I had two fractured discs in my neck, I wanted the best, most experienced doctors involved. There is only one place to turn to in Phoenix- Barrow Brain and Spine; Dr. Randall Porter. Dr. Porter has successfully operated on a long time friend of our family. Dr. Porter met with me and my wife, explained the MRI Thoroughly, and discussed the risks. My cervical spine surgery was on October 3, 2023. I am doing well, wore a neck bone stimulator until 2/10/24 every day for four hours a day. I am so thankful for Dr. Porter and his surgical team!! On August 19th, 2023, I fell in my home and immediately had excruciating pain running down and below my left hip to my foot. After 3 days of constant pain, on August 22nd, I went to the ER at Arizona General Hospital on E. Elliot Rd. in Mesa, Arizona. Following an MRI and several CT scans, it was determined that I had a Lumbar compression fracture and Lumbosacral Radioculopathy. The hospital gave me several pain meds in order to help alleviate the pain and after a few hours I was released. In the hospital discharge instructions, they advised me to follow up with Dr. Timothy Sanford at the Barrow Neurological Brain and Spine Institute in Chandler Arizona as soon as possible. I immediately called his office to set up an appointment and since he was not available for several weeks, I had to see his P.A. on Friday, August 25th. The P.A. determined from the MRI that I should receive an epidural. The spinal epidural was scheduled for September 7th. In the meantime, my pain level was thru the roof. I was above a 10 at all times. From the time of my visit on August 25th until September 7th, I called Dr. Sanford's office 7 times, in tears, and left messages to have the P.A. or anyone call me back. I NEVER received a call back after leaving all those messages. Just before the epidural, I called and got thru and they told me that the P.A. is not allowed to call patients. And, as a result, NO ONE ever called me back during the time that I had been suffering in severe pain. To my disappointment, I had the spinal epidural on September 7th, and still no relief. The excruciating pain was continuing even after the epidural. I was getting 0 to 3 hours of sleep each night due to the pain. Meds were not helping and no one would answer my calls for help. I had a follow-up on Friday, September 22nd with the P. A. She suggested a stronger epidural and another MRI. She concurred with her colleague and both agreed on the 2nd epidural. If the 1st epidural didn't work, how could the second one work as I was left in continual pain? Having received little confidence that a second epidural would work, I immediately went for a 2nd opinion, and the surgeon, after looking at the original MRI and CT scans, determined that I needed a Posterior Laminectomy Infusion with a Spine Jack at L5. During my visit I also discovered that an epidural is like putting water in my spine and would never help to strengthen or heal my spinal condition. I went forward with the surgery on October 11th and the pain is now gone. As a result, I realized that I had wasted 7 weeks in excruciating pain due to Barrow's inability to help or heal my spinal condition. In conclusion, I would NEVER recommend or suggest going to a "teaching" institute, especially Barrow Neurological Brain & Spine Institute!! If I could give 0 stars I would!!! I had a horrible experience at Barrow Neurological Brain and Spine Institute in Chandler Arizona When you go to a teaching institute you are like a Guinea pig for all of the residents who are in training. I am not a "one-size-fits-all" patient. If you want excellent health care, go to a Spine Institute where an actual surgeon will diagnose you, not a Physician's Assistant. This is a heads up so you can avoid going thru the nightmare that I had to go thru with Barrow Neurological Brain & Spine Institute! read more

OMG... Dr. Yeyha was the best and first Neurologist I saw here. I've been wrongly diagnosed for years and he diagnosed within minutes. When he left got Dr. Kingsford, she picked up right where Dr. Yeyha stopped. She did some adjustments, but got me going in right direction. Now I have a great NP that is very familiar with my case. B. Saleen, NP is frickin' awesome! They all listen, in the office anyway. Doesn't seem to be any communication gaps or errors. Can't say the same for the appointment setters you get when you call. THEY screw up ALL the time. But the girls up front that greet you... awesome and gets it done correctly the first time. When you call for appointments and you schedule one, make sure THEY DON'T change it or even NOT schedule it. Every appointment I scheduled on phone was ALWAYS incorrect. Best to waste time and gas to go to office and schedule. FYI... front office manager will ALWAYS make excuses or even lie. So be careful... 5 stars for back office staff only and my women up at front desk. BOM and appointment setters 0 stars and recommend hiring new or sending them back for additional training. I signed up for the second opinion program and now that I got mine, I've come to believe it's a bit of a scam. I had back surgery in October. The original surgery, a laminectomy, didn't quite work, and the surgeon thought a folo wasn't out of the question. I sought out a pain doctor who recommended shots. I thought the doc was great but the shots were a disaster. They hurt like hell, doubled my blood sugar did little for the pain, and blurred my eyesight. So thinking robotic surgery might be a good idea for a follow , I contacted Barrow, filled out the forms and waited for a week. The opinion came in; it was all of two sentences, and not very long ones either. He didn't recommend surgery, no reason given, he just said I should go back to the shots, even though they had such a horrible impact on me. So there I was with two different opinions from two surgeons. I asked Barrow if I could discuss the surgeon's view point further. They said since he didn't recommend surgery, the answer was no. How am I supposed to evaluate his opinion and judge it against the other? Why would he recommend shots after the first set gave me only about five days of relief? Maybe he had a reason but i had no idea what it was. What other things factored into his opinion? I had/have no idea. Really, it was like throwing $100 into the garbage can. read more

I even had to ask for a PT evaluation in hospital as it was never ordered. A call on a Saturday for a simple question took 3 hours for someone to respond. Almost "drive through" surgery. read more

Needed an appointment for a person with Alzheimers. His doctor referred him to Barrow Neurological Institute. All records were both faxed and federal expressed to Barrow. However, they lost them and for three weeks weeks no one was able to find them or give an answer of what had happened to them The receptionists were not accommodating and borderline rude. The supervisors never returned calls. This institution is about as chaotic and not organized and equally bad as the Mayo Clinic Neurology Department. read more

Over-due to review here, but with everything going on this is the first real opportunity. I broke spine in February. I don't remember consenting to the surgery (seriously, I don't remember much that entire week), but Dr Mirzedah did the procedure. They put titanium rods in and "fused" three vertebrae together. They say I was lucky I wasn't paralyzed. Dr Mirzadeh apparently did good work. I'm "healed" now, though the numbness is still not gone. It's getting better all the time, but still not gone. Originally after I was up and walking I could not feel from just below my ribs to just above my knee on the left side. Six months later it is localized to my lower back now. It could take a year or more before it's pretty much normal, but I can expect to be almost normal again. Dr Mirzadeh's office follow-up a few times to assess my progress, and I'm pretty much OK now. I would recommend him for back surgery. read more

After months of waiting I was finally able to get into Barrow Institute and see Dr. Knievel. It is a far drive for me, but I think it's worth it. With everything going on with my brain, I want all the help and knowledge I can get, so I can hopefully feel better sometime soon. Their office at St. Joe's is huge and they have a ton of different doctors that have some sort of connection with neurology. Parking in the parking structure is easiest, and then go to level 4 to check in at the front desk and then they will send you down a long hallway and direct you from there. The waiting rooms are very spacious with a lot of covid precautions still in place. When you are called back, it is very quiet, relaxing and exam rooms are also very spacious. Beautiful office! Dr. Knievel put a plan of action together for me, that will take some time. But so far so good. As I continue my treatment with Dr. Knievel, I will update my reviews. read more

I heard on the news how veterans where treated, but I never believed it. I now understand and cry. My husband is a Veteran and has been refereed to Dr. Jay Turner's office by the VA for a possible life or death scenario. He needs two different specialties that the VA cannot directly handle. We have been in anguish over this journey, and I do not recommend this facility to anyone. The VA referral was sent 4 weeks ago (3/24/21) with imaging to Dr. Jay Turner's office. The front office has been extremely rude to my husband because he requested a consultation and examine. After several calls during the first week and a half no one explained to us Dr. Turner was going on vacation, so we had to wait and follow up when he returns. When he returned from vacation, we had to call and follow up again with the attitude from the front office that does the scheduling. Exact words from front office personal are "we are one of the very few who accept VA Insurance and you will have to wait another 7-14 days for an appointment or find someone else... good luck". This was said without emotional intelligence. Why try to make a veteran feel bad using their hard-earned benefits. Our veterans deserve a lot more respect and courtesy. Shame on her. Week two 1/2 - We had to follow up again with the office. We received the same response as above. We will have to wait another 7-14 days, should have told us before he left on vacation that it would be 30 days. Dr. Turner still has not reviewed my husband's file and our second referral from the VA has been waiting for a consultation with him. Mind you, this is a possible life or death scenario and my husband, and I are exhausted wondering about all the "what if's". At this point we have lost trust in the facility and we have not meet Dr. Jay Turner, not a phone call or email. Week 3 - still no word from the office or Dr. Turner on when we can meet, except they would like to run additional tests.... we are on week 3. Where is the urgency? Second specialist is still waiting on his consultation too. We have no idea what Dr. Turner is thinking. Week 4 - I am angry, disappointed, emotionally depleted, and feel trapped because my husband is being treated in this manner and stuck with this referral. Still no appointment, no follow up and the second referral has not heard from Dr. Turner either. We have Zero diagnosis except to know what the VA originally told us... my husband has 4 masses in his body. I heard on the news how veterans where treated, but I never believed it. The doctors here may be top notch but this is the worst hospital ever for patient care. There are many new grads who are poorly trained. My husband cannot move himself in the bed and routinely waits more than 20 minutes till his request is fulfilled. He frequently does not feel safe when being moved. He was told the nurse to patient ratio is 5:1 as opposed to Chandler Regional where it is 2 or 3 to 1. Yesterday there was only one patient tech for 32 patients. He arrived Saturday afternoon, asked on Monday when he would get physical therapy and was told that PT had not looked at his chart in the 48 hours he had been there. If your loved one needs assistance, plan to spend as much time as possible there because that's the only way they'll get what they need. read more

Two experiences with Barrows. The most recent was the Second Opinion program. Conclusion: complete and immediate waste of $100. Their takeaway was: surgery is a reasonable option and if you have the right insurance we will talk about it with you. Absolutely unbelievable. The other was regarding a TBI. In that case the opinions varied hugely from doctor to doctor, and I had three in a short time because they kept rotating out. Probably a lot of very smart people there. But I can't imagine one can't do better. read more

This hospital gives patients the ridiculous run around only being able to see residents while listed as seeing under the attending. They claim they are a higher specialty hospital but send you to doctors still training and make a patient waiting referral to even be recognized and then a couple of months for an appointment to be available. I have multiple issues that need to be addressed and they are compounding as I wait to be seen by these residents who do not even cover what the important issues were in the MRI ordered. So disappointed in this hospital. Such horrible delay of care happening and ignoring the problems that matter. The Mayo Clinic does not take our insurance so where else is there? Dr Uribe ruined my quality of life. I am worse off now than before the laminectomy. 1 month in the hospital and 3 yrs. later I have no mobility, can't lift anything and fall frequently. I was sent her 12 years ago for a severe TBI. I was supposed to be on a no liquid diet. Thickener added to my drinks. At night when my family left I would leave the hospital room go to a vending machine and buy a soda. The nurses watched me leave and come back never saying anything. I was very disgusted the fact I could barely walk. And hardly talk. When I told the staff this I got well you should be thankful you are alive. I saw an occupational therapist once speech therapist once. Physical therapist many times. They sent me home a month later having had many EEG saying I was seizure free. A few days at home I had seizures found.Dr Torzala. He did EEG changed my RX. read more
