3.5 stars. So Barrio is an expanding chain with 23 locations, known for their tacos, tequila, and whiskey. I have been to three Barrio locations in the Cleveland metro and like how inexpensive it is. Fun fact - Barrio originally started in Cleveland, OH and has 23 locations, with some as far as Texas and Florida! My bf and I went to this South Bend Barrio for lunch on a snowy, January afternoon. I would rate our experience/food 3.5 stars. Anyway, this taco joint is located near lots of student housing and college student friendly business like boba tea shops and gyms by the Notre Dame campus. We weren't looking to spend a lot of money for lunch before heading over to an Expo at the ND football stadium. It was nice inside, with mural art by local artists on the wall, and there were 3 other couples there in this huge space. We were seated right away by the only waitress working during the lunch hour. It took us a while to get our waters and chips/dip. The salsa was good, but watery, and the chips were warm. Free refills on those too. My bf got two tacos, one brunch taco called the dirty scramble, and one cowboy taco, as well as a side of hash browns. We were disappointed to see how tiny the portion of potatoes he got, especially since it cost $3. They were tasty, warm, and slightly spicy so we liked them. We just wish there was more! I got a build your own bowl with spiced chicken and hash potatoes, plus a diet Pepsi. FYI - They serve only Pepsi products here. Like most people, I usually require another plate or bowl to take half out so I can properly mix the bowl. No additional plates or bowls were brought out, so I awkwardly put half the food in an empty chips basket while I mixed the bowl. And when it was time to bring home my leftovers, I was only given a plastic top for the bowl, even though the cardboard base of my bowl was soggy at that point. Oh well! Overall, our lunch bill cost $27, including tax and tip. Not a bad meal, but I like the Cleveland locations better. I wouldn't say no to coming back here when in SB though either. read more

I can't speak to the food, but rather only the experience. It was an extremely busy football weekend in South Bend so they had a long queue and waitlist, which was completely understandable. We were seated within the time promised, and the host was very warm and friendly. To our surprise, we were not provided any menus, but rather at each table, there were paper forms and pens and you fill out what you want. I personally found the forms confusing, and it was not clear how or if you could make any modifications (for example, leave off the onions). They do have a fair variety of options, but after waiting a while and never being approached to understand how we fill out the forms we decided to leave. The food here could very well be fine, and I think they handled the very busy football crowd quite well, but the confusion around menu and ordering, and not having an opportunity to speak to a waitress to understand it further restaurant. Despite our experience, I wouldn't discourage others from giving it a try on a day where how they operate could be better explained. read more

Not worth it! Find an authentic Mexican place and eat there. Had the rice bowl. Rice was pure mush, steak over salted, when it came out it looked like it had been under warming lights for 15+ minutes. Drinks were ok, server was good. But honestly, SB has better Mexican places to choose from! read more

Barrio is a cute experience near Notre Dame's campus that is your standard taco experience. A group of us went in for a quick dinner later on a Saturday evening and had no trouble getting seated. It's a large space with plenty of seating. The way you order is that there's pads of paper and pencils on the table and you select the food that you want and hand it over to your server. There's premade tacos and the build your own. I got a steak taco along with a chicken. The chicken was way more flavorful as the steak was overcooked quite a bit. We also got a salsa/queso/guacamole flight that was decent. I would come back if I needed something quick nearby. read more

One person in our party had a $57 bill for 3 tacos and one drink? Tacos tacos tacos...all types of unwanted things lol, mango bacon cod mushrooms (all things I love, just not in tacos) all dripping with liquid lol. Yuck! If you want tacos head to a different side of town and get real tacos from Rosales or Chicago Taqueria or Jenny's Bakery or Cinco 5 if you want atmosphere and top quality service or any of the other mom and pop spots in town. I've never visited Barrio in any other city so I can't compare it to other locations, but the one on Eddy St. in South Bend is horrendous. The food at Chipotle tastes WAY better and dare I say more "authentic" Mexican, at least flavorful and well seasoned. In fact, Taco Bell's fiesta potatoes are even tastier than their soggy potatoes without any flavor. I ordered a BYO Veggie Bowl with rice and beans. The mushrooms were so bland and looked like they were straight out of a can, no spices or seasoning. Nothing had flavor! The bowl wasn't even full and I added lots of toppings. Like I said previously you're better off at Chipotle or Taco Bell. The walls are sloppily painted with a mural of Calaveras. Its gloomy and dark ugly paintings looked like they were finger painted by a kid, but then there are fluorescent lights that make everything look so bright and harsh like an indoor office, it needs warmer lighting and better chandeliers. The metal chandeliers look like something out of a torture dungeon. Everything is so bland here, all black and white monochrome everywhere, even the wait staff's uniform is black and white t-shirt. The only pop of color are the really cheap looking tacky green tables. It's definitely not what I expected. They also had the doors opened for the outside patio seating which lead to there being tons of gnats and fruit flies, it was very unpleasant! I was swatting them from my food every five seconds. Because of the doors being opened it was also extremely hot and humid, so much so that my "frozen" margarita came completed melted and I mistook it for a margarita on the rocks. The service also sucks. There was a waitress "training" with our server but they don't do anything but collect the paper you fill out with your order. They didn't even bring out our food, it was a food runner who brought it. My boyfriend was very underwhelmed with his crispy chicken taco bowl, it looked like it was made haphazardly and sprinkled with some crushed Dorito's. $60 for two bowls and two drinks and a terrible, over priced dining experience. Needless to say, I won't be returning. There are way better Mexican spots in South Bend and even Chipotle serves beer so just save yourself the trouble and money and go up the street on Eddy. read more

If I could do 2.5/5 I would. This had around a 40 minute wait when we got there. Our server was very kind and we got to sit outside. It's got the same vibe as social cantina but more casual? The drinks were bad. Watered down. Some of the food was hit or miss but the protein portion sizes were borderline offensive. $4.5 taco, +$1 on shrimp to only get 3 pieces of shrimp?? Barrio Tacos is a fabulous establishment and a perfect addition to Eddy Street! We went for a birthday celebration and were warmly greeted and introduced to how to order. Our server, Jesse, was attentive and made our evening most special! The option to build your own taco or order one of the specially crafted creations was wonderful! And the chips- absolutely amazing! Was so excited to go to this new taco and tequila spot for fresh good Mexican. Sadly it is a super loud (music and just overall voice acoustics) to even be able to get through dinner. They MUST do something to absorb all the ambient noise/talking and LOWER the volume of the music. It's one thing to crank it loud later night for the drinking party crowd but if they want any dinner patrons they need to adjust it asap. Can't go back. I was really looking forward to Barrio opening in our area. However, the whole experience was overall disappointing. We sat at the bar and there was only one bartender. The bartender spent most of her time making drinks for the restaurant instead of checking on the actual guests at the bar. They definitely needed 2 bartenders working the bar. It was really loud and bright in the restaurant and felt like you were eating in a school cafeteria. We finally received our margaritas and they were pretty good. The chips were also very salty but good. The menu was confusing because really wasn't a lot of prices or a menu but more a bubble sheet that fill out for toppings. I ordered a rice bowl with a lot of toppings. When the food did arrive it was bland and wish I would just ate Chipotle down the street because it taste so much better and is quite cheaper. We were never offered another drink which we did want to order. We asked for our check a few times. When we finally got the check, I was charged for a few times that weren't included in my bowl but I had circled on the ordering sheet. The bartender never asked how the meal was or if we needed anything else. At this point, we just wanted to leave and such a hassle to get anyone to assist us that happily paid the extra so we could just leave. Overall, we were disappointed in the food and the service. If I ever went back it would just be for chips and a margarita. So hopefully, they make some changes to their service and add some seasonings to their food. Friday night after a long week and I don't need to have to use my cell phone to take a picture of a QR code to find out what the drink menu is. The entire menu is like a Putt-Putt minigolf experience. Maybe ND students like it because it's like completing a Scranton test. There were more people working there than there were customers. The food took an incredibly long time and most of the staff were visiting with each other, and the diners were simply an afterthought and an imposition toward their Friday night visitations. Food was OK. When food finally arrived, the portions were generous. Ambiance VERY BRIGHT. Bring sunglasses. I had no idea restaurant lighting could block out the sun, but it does. The whole menu ordering deal was so confusing we had to stop by Arby's on the way home for an 18-year-old who had no idea what had just happened to her food order. It's all unnecessarily confusing with multiple menus, pencils, no pictures of any food and not knowing what's going to happen. I don't go out to eat to remind me of taking the SAT's! read more
