A cop told us about this place and it was incredible. We had shrimp cocktail, and guacamole for starters. I added a little salt to the guac. Husband had the fajitas mix which had the BEST seasoning! Restaurant had plenty of parking across the street. Inside virtually floor to ceiling windows and plenty of room to move around. Lemonade was tart. I am used to a sweeter version. I had a wonderful lunch at El Tecate. I had the chorizo omelette. My gosh it was truly delicious. The rice, beans, fresh tortillas and everything were just great. The portions were huge. The service was exceptional. It's a really nice place but I would emphasize that this is a local neighborhood restaurant so if you're expecting a chain restaurant you'll be disappointed. The food is authentic and delicious. I went here with my fiancée last month and we got an assortment of seafood items. Ceviche tostada and crab molcajete were great as were the micheladas. The service, however, was not great, and I got the impression our waitress didn't appreciate that we don't speak Spanish. In addition, we were harassed multiple times by a man with a guitar (who I don't think could speak English) for money to play us a song. Someone else ended up paying him, at which point he sang at a deafening volume in this tiny restaurant. Still, the food was pretty good, so we just went with the flow. read more

Earlier this month, myself and a friend went into El Tecate. The ambience was your typical Mexican restaurant. The waitress was swamped, but was trying her best. The reason I gave it to stars was because of the waitress doing her job. As for the food, the refried beans were extremely running. The guacamole supposedly the house special look like it was made in a blender. I had a Carne Asada torta that was pretty much flavorless. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anybody. read more

I've eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants in the SW and elsewhere. This place is outstanding and bar none has some major quality food. The service is good and the ambiance is very diner quality Mexican food with real music . The place hs several big screen TVs and no fake decor. It's the food it's seriously good. I had the Mojettes 7 Mare. The bread that came with it is fresh and good. It's non descript from the outside in a residential area. read more

Go to taco spot in South Bend. Was introduced to this lively little restaurant recently and I can't wait to go back and try more things! Service was pretty prompt and the food is delicious. Loud music on a Saturday evening so if you're looking for a quiet place maybe look elsewhere. read more

Wow! I finally found several dishes that I haven't been able to get locally since leaving San Diego. The Vuelve a la Vida was perfect and packed so full of seafood, not straight liquid like most cóctels found at other locations. The pescado ceviche tostada was piled high with refreshing limey fish and pico mixture topped with sliced avocado. There was no need for any salsa or hot sauce. It was delicious! The molcajete cora was the star of the show!!! It sizzled so loudly, the gentleman three tables away commented about hearing it! It was mounded with muscles, clams, shrimp, prawns, octopus, and other seafood, topped with crab legs climbing out! Everything was so fresh and fabulous, I insisted on returning again for dinner.... so we've been two nights in a row now! We had another molcajete cora and a molcajete mar y tierra. Both were absolutely fantastic!! I remembered to take pics too before we had eaten too much! read more

We wanted to stop somewhere local and El Tecate popped into our maps. Real, authentic, and delicious food. I had the Birria tacos that had all the good fixings like cilantro, fresh onion. Quick service and we were in and out within 45 minutes and back out on the road. I ate my tacos so fast that I forgot to take a photo but, trust me, they were fire! read more

Do not go here if you are white or first generation American, if you don't have some patience, and a sense of humor. The food is perfect, but the staff is racist. If you look Hispanic, but don't feel comfortable speaking Spanish, the waitresses will ignore you. If you are a white girl with a Hispanic man, the wait staff will treat you like you are below them- to the extent that they serve you 10 minutes after the rest of your party. Overall, still a great place, filled with great music, clean atmosphere and amazing food. read more

Excelente! My son told us to meet him and his friends at this place and it truly was an excellent choice. We tried the carne asada, birria and I had the shrimp. The taste was there, the aroma too!
