The price for the exam was $65 which seemed reasonable compared with $125 at an place closer to my apartment. I showed up for the first appointment and while Kim, the receptionist, was nice enough, she claimed she had left me a message saying my appointment was delayed and I wouldn't be seen for another 3 hours. I don't drive (am disabled after a broken neck and multiple TBI's) so I didn't really have a choice; I opted to wait the 3 hours till the doctor would see me. This was the first time I've ever had a contact lens fitting where the doctor used his own, unwashed hands to put the contacts in my eyes. A week or so later, during this trial period of testing the lenses, I developed a discharge from my right eye and the lens itself was likely defective as it kept popping out of my eye. I called to make another appointment and explained the issue with the lens popping out. The doctor and his son (I'm guessing they are related somehow) didn't seem too happy to give me another pair of lenses to try out. It's like jeeze, you guys aren't paying for the lenses, what's the beef? Oh and then I was shamed for having Medicaid. They apparently saw me as some kind of "free loader" and treated me rudely. My case worker was with me for the second appointment and we both looked at each other like is this really happening? Are we really being treated like this? The doctor made a particularly rude comment to my case worker and then plainly ignored her when she asked him a question. He muttered some off color joke under his breath - it was super uncomfortable. The really fun part was when I went to choose a pair of glasses from the Medicaid section of available frames. I prefer to have larger lenses/frames as they help me see much better. I picked out the biggest frames in the Medicaid selection and boy, the man who "helped" me was not pleased at all. Again, these are glasses for me, not this dude. Why was he so upset I chose glasses which were covered by Medicaid and available in the section of their store FOR MEDICAID GLASSES. This guy kept telling me, or trying to tell me, there was no way they could put lenses in the frames I had chosen, and seemed appalled overall by my selection and persistence. He then tried to charge me an additional $40 bucks (talked down from his original pitch of $60) to put lenses in the frames. Dude, the glasses are covered by Medicaid, you can't charge people for glasses that are covered by this plan. Ugh. When I went back for the last time to get the new trial lenses and get a copy of my prescription, the Medicaid nazi was again seemingly appalled by my presence. How dare I have an eye exam, a trial pair of lenses and a pair of glasses covered by Medicaid? When I asked for a copy of my prescription, he struggled to use the printer/copier, I assume it hadn't been used for a long time and/or the guy just didn't know what he was doing or how to operate the machine. He begrudgingly gave me my prescription, though of course the doctor failed to indicate which eye had whatever number the prescription is. Really not looking forward to calling for clarification but oh well, looks like I'll have to. I obviously won't be going back to Shalmar for further eye exams, and can't recommend this place to others. It's unfortunate as they do have a nice selection of eyewear but meh, you can find great glasses elsewhere and be treated with respect, regardless of what insurance you have. One and only star goes to Kim, for at least attempting to be pleasant. I can't imagine having to work in such a small space with that doctor and his rude son. She's probably seen a lot.

I was very happy to find a new optometrist and didn't anticipate returning for a second visit so quickly. Within a few days of my appointment I got something in my eye when walking outside in the wind. I finally called several days later when it became even more irritated and they worked me in the same day. Dr. McMahon found a grain of sand had stuck itself to my eye and said next time to not hesitate calling to come in for a check. It was such a relief to get it out and they were so awesome to get me scheduled same day to come in when I called. My daughter needs a new optometrist and I know who I'll be sending her to! I highly recommend Dr. McMahon and appreciate how considerate and professional both she and her practice is.

I was a patient at this practice for a few years and typically just scheduled annual appointments. That process went mostly smooth but if you have any question whatsoever it requires multiple steps of escalation and the staff are clearly annoyed and not properly trained. On one occasion I had an eye related emergency and the staff offered no emergency appointment or guidance for alternative treatment centers. That lack of assistance/guidance resulted in a $100 emergency room visit. The first question the ER asked me was why didn't your Optometrists schedule you for a sick visit? The last straw for me was when the front desk staff recently tried to cancel an existing annual appointment due to a VSP benefit being exhausted for the calendar year. The staff at no point asked if I had a secondary vision benefit (which I did) or if I still would like to keep the existing appointment with the understanding that the appointment fee would be an out of pocket expense. When I expressed to the staff that the customer service at this office is significantly lacking and that I would not be a returning patient the receptionist audibly sighed and said, " Yeah...ok" So for the above mentioned reasons I would no longer recommend this practice to others in my community.

She said she understood and then took me to a rack to pick out some options that were covered. After sitting back down, she tried to upsell every option to me. I declined them, and then was still met by a $110 quote on my way out. There are signs everywhere saying "no refunds", which did not inspire my confidence in the quality of their craftsmanship. I can get 5 pairs of similar quality glasses online for less money and be met with better customer service with return options, so I'll be doing that. During my short thirty minute visit, the phone was ringing off the hook, calls were going unanswered, and another customer was in the lobby literally crying in frustration over having had such terrible experiences with the office. I had a similar experience with this office last year and will likely be taking my business elsewhere in the future, which is a shame because again, the tech and doctor seemed knowledgeable and efficient.

The text message was sent 28 minutes before appointment. They called me too 28 minutes before but I'm driving so my phone is in automatic do not disturb until I shut off my car. I asked why and I was told by the receptionist that even though I confirmed my appointment by email prior thereto, because I failed to return their call when they called me to remind me of the appointment they cancelled it. I confirmed my appointment and that is all that should be necessary. I lost an hour and a half of work with no pay. I will find a nice little small office who will treat me with respect.

The exam is good and I love everything he did because he is quite thorough and he showed me what is what. I decided on one pair and they said to wait 7-10 days but it was about 3 weeks before they gave me my glasses. It's also the same building where I see my dermatologist and rheumatologist, and about a 15-20 minute walk from where I am, so really a plus. The experience here was pleasant. There was one other person ahead of me so the wait time wasn't bad. Dr. Cesaro here is really awesome, you know he knows what he's doing. This was a nice change from the other place I was going to (I will probably write a review about that later. Long story short, avoid mall optical shops at all costs). The person who had helped me select styles was Mary Ann, who also knows exactly what she's doing and tells you honestly what she thinks works well with a person's face. A breathe of blatant fresh air when you compare that to the sales associate at Lenscrafters that tries to push you to buying something that looks nice without regard to accommodation. Obv, I don't speak for all Lenscrafters, just from the experience I've had. They were nice enough to take notes on the styles that I kept in mind for later visits. I did eventually come back recently to try them on again but decided not to make a purchase. (really the price for what I had choosen was out of my range... $200 for frames, $130 for regular lenses, or $180 for poly carbonate lens which are thinner and less heavier). These were brand name Coach eyeglasses, not a big shocker. As much as I loved them I had to depart from them and call around for better deals. So, all in all great staff here. It would be 4 stars had it not been for steeper price range. Nonetheless great styles if you're willing to pay for the price.
