I love the counter service concept and being able to pick my pastry out of the case before finding a seat. I ordered the breakfast burrito, a lemon poppyseed muffin, and a latte. For brunch catching up with a friend, it was the perfect blend of savory and sweet. And MAN was the breakfast burrito delish - I adore when breakfast items have a hearty serving of avocado, and the burrito struck the perfect balance of avo and egg goodness. The accompanying sauce was also delicious. My only complaint is I'm not a local so I can't visit more often. Definitely give this one a try! read more

Barrett's dinner and happy hour is the best kept secret in town! There I said it, and boy do I mean it! My son had the grand idea to stop by for a brownie and when they walked in we were greeted by a friendly hostess who asked if we needed a table for 4. We were still thinking we would stick to just a sweet treat, until we looked at the menu and were told it was happy hour. We decided to all get dinner and were not disappointed! The meal was started with some delicious bread rolls, the beers were only $1.50 on happy hour and they even gave us scotcharoos to end our experience!! My wife and I visited Barrett's for coffee and pastries on Wednesday morning. Below are our thoughts! Food/Drink: Apple Cider Donut Cake (Delicious! Rating = 8.6/10), Nutella Croissant (I'm a sucker for Nutella and this definitely delivered. Rating = 9.2), Hot Frosted Sugar Cookie Latte (Solid - nothing special here, probably wouldn't order again. Rating = 7.2/10), and Iced Vanilla Latte (Another solid latte, I liked how you could easily taste the espresso flavor! Rating = 7.9/10). Service: We didn't receive great service on this morning. The cashier seemed a little grouchy and our drinks took a while to come out. Nothing that majorly impacted our visit though. Ambiance: The location itself has an excellent vibe and physical space. There is ample seating with a variety of tables, booths, and stools. The space is also decorated/setup extremely well - I'd say one of the best I have reviewed thus far! This was such a fantastic place to go for brunch. We sat on the patio, and our experience started with our server, Boris, who was amazing. He was friendly and knowledgeable, and knew the line perfectly between being friendly and being awkward or talking too much. I wish every server were like him. Our food was delicious, and they not only had gluten-free and dairy-free options for my friend, but also had options for me in the yogurt bowl, as I cannot have eggs. The bacon was salty, thick, and crispy, which was exactly how I preferred it. The coffee was great, and the patio ambiance was so enjoyable. Inside was very cute as well, with a trendy, modern bakery feel. As we were leaving, we were introduced to the cutest little mobile mimosa cart, so I know what I will have to try the next time we are there. Love Barrett's!! Several friends recommended coming here when I was in town so I did and I'm so glad because it quickly became my go-to spot for coffee and pastries. I've tried their flat white which was very good -- espresso is strong and drink was hot. I also got their Iced Brown Sugar Cinnamon Latte when it was hot out and it was perfect! Not too sweet and I could still taste the espresso. Service at the pastry counter is always spot on, the service at the coffee bar could definitely improve, maybe it was just an off day for the barista, but she wasn't super friendly. I also picked up a little tin of fancy salt, and it's so cute! It's my little souvenir to remind me of my favorite coffee shop in Iowa City. Love the clean and fresh vibes in here. The food here is good, but I personally don't like the way it is set up. I have been twice - once for dinner and once for breakfast. For breakfast, we had to order at the counter, grab a number, sit down. Water was self serve. Food came out in under 3 minutes with drinks following about 5 minutes after that. For dinner, we walked in and were sat by a hostess. We then had a waiter who took our orders and brought us our meals. Drinks came out in under 10 minutes, followed by food in under 30. Personally, I enjoyed the dinner experience more, and they have a great happy hour. Overall it is ok, good food, but a strange setup and dining experience. read more

This a counter service restaurant. You order the counter. Take a number and then sit at a table. The service is quick but they really could have more napkins at the table. Out drinks came first. A lemonade and ice teas. I was actually impressed with the quality of the lemonade and tea. Bright and refreshing. The lemonade was not too sweet or sour. Perfect. The food came next. A cheeseburger with fries, the chicken salad croissant with salad, and their guava French toast. The burger was juicy but a bit small. The fries were horrendous. Just mushy. The chicken salad was good. Outside the bone I pulled out. The croissant was average. I think I would have enjoyed it more on just plain bread. The French toast was very good. Super sweet though. Kinda small. My biggest complaint. This cost 82$. I just can't justify above well average prices for a counter service restaurant with slightly above average food. read more

Cannot speak more highly of the service at Barrett's. We've been three times and each time are met with the most friendly, helpful, and speedy wait staff. The vibe is very cute in the restaurant. A unique spot in IC/Coralville for sure. The food is always so tasty, and the menu gets updated to keep things changing for patrons. I will say that the menu is not super extensive which is a pro IMO but can be a con for others. We finally got an opportunity to visit Barrett's yesterday and it did not disappoint. I was a little wary about going at brunch time on a weekend because so many places have long waits on the weekend, but there was plenty of seating and a very cool farm-to-table ambiance. I have enjoyed the food both times I've visited Barrett's, and the order-to-table time was impressively quick on both occasions. What has been more inconsistent, however, has been the service. During our most recent visit, the experience felt rushed, as though we were inconveniencing the staff and they wanted us out as quickly as possible. Before we were even seated, we were informed that our table was reserved for another party two hours later. It was a blend of bell peppers, tomatoes and onions which made for an aromatic combination, but I felt it could have used some more seasoning. I went for a soft egg too and it was perfectly soft boiled! Salmon salad-- this was more like a salmon bowl than a salad since it was served with a generous portion of rice. The salmon was cooked just until flaky--my favorite Ecuadorian chocolate-- this dessert was made to impress. The chocolate mousse was so smooth and the cocoa was bold. Sorry for the delay in making the post... my birthday was a while ago. We made a reservation but there were plenty of available tables. So, you could pop in and still have a wonderful time. And, it was a wonderful time. The staff were all wonderful from the time we entered... the place looks great inside. As I walked past the bakery heading for our table, I started to get very hungry. We were greeted and seated on time... and then the good part started - the food and drinks. Wonderful drinks and beer. While Barrett's is better known for its morning offerings, we went for dinner and it was very good. The service was a bit slow and underwhelming given the restaurant was almost empty but that seems more about dinner service being new than anything else. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and while it sit as an out building in basically a suburban strip mall type area, the inside is inviting and offer a good vibe. The patio is also great. The star of the experience was the food. Everything we had was well prepared and had great flavor. Their signature burger provides dinner and a show as the sauce is poured over the burger at the table. The flavor is fantastic but eat it in a hurry. As the meal cool, the textures and the flavors seem to fade. But, just don't eat it slow (or share); it is well worth it! The prime rib was also a great choice. Perfectly cooked. The one downside was the horseradish cream lacked flavor and heat and there was way too much of it. However, still some of the best prime rib in the area.
