I do love this establishment. My favorite is the engineer; A hot sub w/ turkey, cheese, and mushrooms. Sandwiches come in small, medium, or large...I usually get the medium.

What do we do when it's Sunday and too late for me to cook dinner? Order Firehouse Subs. I could already hear the crunch of that crisp pickle spear when I thought up this bright idea. I arrived at the store around 7:30 p.m. and the employees already had a head start on moping the floors for closing at 9 p.m. The restaurant and parking lot were a ghost town. I was greeted with the typical "Welcome to Firehouse!" that is perfectly loud and inviting. A gentleman rang up my order and his colleague promptly started on my two large Turkey bacon ranch sandwiches-- a classic order for my husband and I. It took some time to make the subs but I left content with two subs, some hot sauce, and those pickle spears (I steal my husband's) to chow down on once arriving at home. I left with no complaints... until I opened my sub to find NO PICKLE SPEAR. Would this be a big deal for everyone, probably not, but that was the *one* thing I was looking forward to the most. My heart sank thinking about a pickle-less night of Firehouse. I shouldn't have to ask for the pickle spear but next time I'll remember to say something to avoid the heartbreak I felt last night. Our sandwiches were delicious and packed with meat but it's just not the same without the pickle. [insert a falling tear]

The food and the service are always good. By far, it's my favorite sub sandwich in Iowa City.

Best subs and soups. Never disappointed. Just wish they would come back to Davenport Iowa.

Full disclosure, I have an emotional bias towards this chain. My wife and I would frequent the one…read morein Ames Iowa in college and spend money we made collecting cans. Was a great deal for fast high quantity food. Today's visit went about as well as we could've hoped. We got to try all our old usuals and they were just as good as we remembered! The only real down side was the "shrink flation" of portions, but I'm not surprised given the all the changes that happened over the last 6 years. Oh yeah and one pandemic. Core memory... We got a lot of food to try and sample as much as we could (we usually do on a first visit to a place to see what we like and have more reasons to come back). The churro could've been warmer, but it was a good combination of crunchy and sweet which I was okay with. The burrito taco combo was great, though the spicy green sauce is what sealed the deal for me on it. Fries were 99 cents as a side, couldn't say no! Nice and hot when we got them! Yummy! Chips and queso was also good. Cheese was steaming hot! Quesadilla was massive! We added Pico but think we will ask for it on the side in the future. Breakfast burrito with bacon was as good as we remembered, but like mentioned before not as big. The Pina drink was pleasant. We will likely get it again. Tastes like pineapple! The automated ordering machine was nice in our case since we could look closely at all the options and take our time, but in the future I think I'll stick with talking to a person (which I think is an option for ordering? There is a drive through so for sure there is a way). Food came out promptly with minimal staggering. Our server was pleasant which is a plus these days. It was kinda empty and quiet inside which we don't mind, but if that kind of atmosphere is off putting to you, you have been warned. Though a train going by occasionally does break the silence quite dramatically. Also, the train. Don't forget about it if you are trying to grab a quick bite for lunch! We certainly will come back again for some comfort food and reminder of "good-O'l times"

I ordered it, it was the grilled chicken avocado sandwich on sourdough bread. My husband ordered the grilled chicken breast with BBQ sauce. When we got our sandwiches, my husband's was very small but towered over his and then I found out why. I flipped 1/2 of my sandwich over and lifted the bread and a quarter of the sandwich was "spring greens " then the rest of the sandwich consisted of some chicken breast, 2 tiny slices of avocado, 1 half slice of Swiss cheese and 2 slices of all roma tomatoes. The sourdough bread was stale and the crust was so tough I couldn't bite through it and chew it. Between my husbands grilled chicken sandwich and my "grilled chicken avocado sandwich " we paid over $30 for 2 of the worst sandwiches I have ever eaten. This restaurant seems to not care about their customers, they just slap something together and give it out. WE CERTAINLY WILL NOT BE COMING BACK TO THIS RESTAURANT. We've eaten at many other locations and the staff and food have been great.
