I can only imagine what yoga teachers have to endure-- harness all this energy that people bring to the room. I know I usually do yoga when I'm stressed out, need relief, want to relax and challenge my body to connect with the earth and become more grounded in the here and now. It's a lot to deal with I'm sure for the teachers, and this is true for any yoga studio. Yoga Hive is extra amazing at empathy and empowerment. They challenge you, and you definitely will get in serious yoga shape, but in a compassionate, non-judgmental way. The yoga instructors are really good here, and I mean, REALLY good. The sessions are filled with beginners to advanced dancers who are beyond gorgeous with their postures, and everyone is celebrated. The instructors are top notch-- they support the super beginner to the professional dancer. It's a very diverse and vibrant community, which I just love so much.

First and foremost, I am just your average chick in the sense that I do NOT habitually workout, count my calories, meal prep, etc. I did have a membership at LA Fitness for 3 years (2015-2017) but was really only actively using it for 1 year so I finally made the decision to cancel it. I first step foot into this box July 4, 2017 when my boyfriend invited me to come to their post-WOD ("workout of the day") BBQ. I literally only came for the food, sorry! At the time I still held a membership at LA Fitness and had absolutely NO intentions of committing to another gym; Especially not CrossFit. But of course everyone urged me to give it a try and I left that day with the mindset that CrossFit was a cult (lol). [...Fast forward to March 2018 when the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games were going on...] My boyfriend asked me to come to the box with him every Friday this month to record his WODs and so I did. On the last week of March, he spontaneously bought me a Groupon for their Fundamentals class ($32) and the rest was history... I've never found a fitness program that I enjoyed until I started CrossFit. Reasons why I love this program (and why it works for me): *Your WOD is created for you & released on their app (Wodify) 8PM the night before so you never have to pre-plan before coming. Plus, they're typically only 15-30mins long but it'll get your HR way up there bc of its style of HIIT. *You always work out in groups/classes which is motivating when you feel like stopping mid-workout but everyone around you is still going strong. Everyone is also so welcoming & full of encouragement! *If there is an exercise that you are unable to do, there is always a scaled version of it or some type of exercise you can do to work on those targeted muscles. *There is always a coach present to stretch you out as a group, ensure everyone warms up properly, & guide you throughout the WOD/correct your form if necessary. *They have a great sound system & nothing is better during a workout than music drowning out the sound of your pain. More about the Groupon Deal: Fundamental classes start at the beginning of every month. Classes are MWT @ 7:30PM for the first 4 weeks. You will then graduate to the intermediate class which you will be allowed to attend for the following 2 weeks and decide if you would like to purchase a membership. You get a cool swag bag for joining which includes free monthly body composition analysis at Max Nutrition. More about CrossFit Valitus: Classes are offered 6 days/week (Monday-Saturday) with M-F at 6AM, 7AM, 12PM, 4:30PM, 5:30PM, and 6:30PM and Saturday at 9AM or 10AM. Some Saturdays are partner workouts to which you're more than welcome to bring a friend/family member as long as they're familiar with the WOD's exercises. They're also open on Sundays at 12PM as an open gym so you can come and work on any exercise that needs improvement. Oh, did I mention you get access to Dynamo's Swim Club!? Lastly, there are currently 4 coaches and every single one of them is awesome in their own way. *Crystal--The owner and awesome fundamentals instructor *Art--The head coach who's great at making sure you're stretched out for you WOD and trains our triathlon team *Rene--Beast crossfitter who also holds flexibility and strength training classes a few times a week *Isa--Best WOD DJ and motivator since she Rx's just about every workout (sometimes 2-3x/day!) Whew, that was a long one but I warned you! I know CrossFit may seem intimidating and even scary to the average person but don't knock it till you try it. It's only been a little over 2 months for me and I've already seen changes within my body and PR'd more exercises than I could even count. I'll end off with this quote: "A year from now you will wish you had started today"

So, I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure how much of a fool I was going to make of myself-- but I really wanted to switch up my workout routine. I went to Gina's Anusara class for beginners. The space is small, and a little weirdly organized. They only accept cash or check, so good thing I had a checkbook. You deposit your money in this bowl, and if you need change, you make it based on the cash in there (honor system). I really liked the vibe of the place. Very relaxing and very soothing. Gina was very nonjudgmental and helped me at my sad attempt at a half hand stand (why do yoga people LOVE these??) but she was SO patient with my sometimes dense behavior. The poses were very suitable for a beginner, and even before the day was out I was feeling sore in my arms (awesome!). I really liked this class, and given that there were like 5 students total, it was great to get some individual attention. I will definitely be back, and I might sign up for a package and save a little money.

I figured I would hate this type of yoga: who wants to be hot and sweaty while trying to achieve calm and peace? But my first class at the Westside location with Theo was a positive experience all around. I have a dear friend who is a Yonder Yoga devotee and she brought me in as a guest. The hour long class flew by, I enjoyed being with so many other yogis at various levels and the heat element was surprisingly pleasant. I've since purchased the new unlimited membership for 40 bucks and it was well worth it for unlimited classes at any location for a month. (Just a quick email was all it took to make sure my account wasn't automatically renewed) The teachers are so encouraging and make the flows informative and engaging. The studio spaces I went to are very clean and mats are provided if needed. Definitely bring a water bottle, towel and I would also recommend bringing your own yoga towel for your mat. You are gonna sweat, but so is everyone else, and it isn't gross like I imagined before trying it out. I think my one critique of Yonder Yoga would be that it's intense and hard to jump into for those brand new to yoga or working out in general. I found that even the "foundations flow" class, designed for newbies, is hard. Thankfully, no one is demanding perfection in any of Yonder Yoga's classes.

Injury on day one, locked out on day two - zero flexibility or care for new members…read more I recently signed up for a trial membership, but after my experience over my first two visits, I will not be returning or converting to a full membership. My very first class set a terrible precedent: the instructor advised students to "lean into" painful stretches, which directly led to me injuring myself. Today was supposed to be my second class back after taking time off to heal that injury. I took a 20-minute walk to get to the studio and arrived three minutes past class time. The doors lock automatically after two minutes, which I understand in principle, but when I knocked, a staff member came to the door and flatly refused to let me in. Turning away a recovering student over a three-minute delay (especially after making the effort to walk there) shows a complete lack of empathy and customer care. To make matters worse, while the staff member offered to waive any late penalties, they couldn't even figure out how to process it in their system. I have since emailed management directly to request a waiver of any penalties and to immediately cancel my recurring membership, which is set to bill tomorrow. Given their rigid policies and total lack of client support, however, I'm certain they won't even entertain the request. Between unsafe instruction that caused an injury and an absurdly rigid locked-door policy, this studio has shown a total disregard for student well-being. Save your money and go somewhere that actually values its members.
