We had a great meal and took full advantage of the prix fixe menu - three courses for an unbelievable £10.50. The staff were very friendly, the varied menu delicious (and more than enough) and I had two generous glasses of the house Pinot Grigio which wasn't overpriced. It turns out the pub had belonged to previous generations of current landlords Pauls family and there are various pictures (and copies of original lease) around the bar to prove it. We had a wonderful meal in the restaurant then back to the bar for a couple more drinks and more chat with the friendly locals. It turns out they even offer a free lift home service for evening diners which could come in very handy indeed. They also do all sorts of other specials such as steak nights and meal deals along with a beer festival and even a sponsered bungy jump! All in all a pleasant proper country pub with excellent food and drinks and a great atmosphere.

Never fewer than five tip top ales on the go though. This is a pub that has wooden floors too. Not the vomit yellow faux wood that has infected so many pubs of late. They are old. They have had beer spilt on them. They are terrific. There is also a Northamptonshire skittles table here which seems always to be available. This is also a pub for watching rugby. The landlord is a Gloucester fan, but let not this put you off. After a home game, the place will be full of Saints supporters. Drinking real ale and eating pork scratchings. I recommend you do the same. Watch rugby, drink ale and eat pigs. It's brilliant. It's a solid bar with a wide selection of beers, including some unusual finds from places like Norway, and more locally, some experimental English brewers. Which is to say, don't come here if you're looking for the standard selection of ales and lagers, as there's no shortage of that at any other pub in Northampton. Instead, Bar Hygge features some local and not-so-local craft brews. Of course, there's no shortage of beer-of-the-moment IPAs, but they also have Westmalle Dubbel, a superb dark Belgian Trappist ale. I have two points of contention, though: dissimilar service and a limited food menu. Starting with food, it's tasty but limited. Think of sandwich tapas. I had three of them, and each was nicely prepared aesthetically, and also flavourful. You can also put together your own meat and cheese plate. Just be warned its a pretty niche menu so you may be disappointed. The other point is dissimilar service. On my first trip here, I was allowed to open a tab while sitting outside. However, on my second trip I was told I could only start a tab if I was sitting inside. It's not a big deal, but nice to be extended this courtesy on one day, and disappointing the next. Still, these two relatively minor points don't significantly detract from what is otherwise a refreshing and unique choice for a drink in Northampton, for which Royal and Derngate should be commended, their vision for Northampton continues to shape the surrounding areas into a great town center.
