George and staff quite honestly are awesome. The right people help make any establishment, but this place has three other points that put this great little spot on the map. BEER I'm always impressed by a place that takes its' beer seriously, and the Wooden Walls does not disappoint, even within walls so close together. They have several awesome cask ales on tap as well as authentic Guinness, Peroni, and a host of others - each available in the perfect glassware for the pour. GREAT FOOD The food here really is wonderful. Traditional fare such as fish and chips and Yorkshire pudding are perfect. Additionally though, there are a host of other more adventurous pairings that are equally exquisite. Crab cakes are great, the jenga fries are creative and delicious. You really can't go wrong. ATMOSPHERE This place has a wonderful, quaint atmosphere about it. It's small, intimate setting is a great blend of modern accents on old world charm. Fresh and clean setting. This place is just a short hop off of the M1, and totally worth it.

Acts such as U2, Status Quo, Thin Lizzy and John Peel himself are all said to have played there in their early career. Obviously the pub has changed radically since those heady days of rock and roll. The old hall upstairs which was used as the club can still be hired out for events. With its large windows and stripped floor it has a fantastic charm for an intimate wedding or celebration. However, you will be pleased to hear that there is no evidence of the 70's disco that it used to be. The restaurant downstairs is a revelation to the village. Chris the head chef has brought high quality dining to the area much like his predecessor brought quality rock bands. His menu is interesting without being pretentious with classics such as game, steak and chicken sitting beside a great fish menu. The selection changes regularly so each time there is something new to try. His wine list is also very strong and we have enjoyed many a night sampling a range of grape derived delights. The pub offers private dining as well as the hall and restaurant so it can cater for family groups of up to 10 or 12 people. On the nights we have been there the place has been busy so I recommend booking ahead of time. In conclusion I would highly recommend this place if you are in mind for top notch food in a historic setting.

The service proved to be very poor. Wine only arrived after the starters were finished and then only after we had requested it. When it did arrive it was just deposited on the table, not poured, no tasting offered. The table nearby was possibly less well served, after 40 minutes the starters came out, and the mains took over 75 minutes from them sitting down. We had empty glasses on the table whilst serving staff went past at least a dozen times, we eventually asked for them to be removed. When our food finally arrived the food is actually quite good: my mixed grill was quite tasty, but my partner's halloumi was undercooked (not crispy or squeaky) and the tzatziki didn't taste of mint or have a kick of garlic and lemon which is very disappointing, it tasted more like tartare sauce! The creme brulee let the side down again: the 'dipping strawberries' on top with dark and white chocolate were lovely, but the sugar on top of the brulee wasn't caramelised, so no crunchy top although the custard beneath was good. Overall a strange mixed result. Perhaps if they replace the front of house staff things would be better, but the kitchen needs to work a little harder too We probably won't return for a meal, but if you fancy a nice drink by the canal on a good day recommended.

The food is quite nice to be fair and the staff seem friendly enough. The pub itself boasts a great canal side location which is fantastic in the summer months watching the boats go by. The interior is fresh and welcoming and the locals are friendly. I will visit again but I won't be able to drink as much as I would like to due to the extortionate prices of their ales and beers. Not sure if I would eat there again as their are cheaper options in the area that are just as good.

Both dishes were good though the lamb was slightly oily - never good, especially when served on a wooden board. The pub area is light and airy, the staff are pretty friendly and the range of drinks is quite large including some of the larger names of real ales. There's also the option to eat in the bar area or in the huge terrace area at the rear, which has the large European cafe style of canopies and gas heaters. Having been to the restaurant at the World's End around five or six times over the last few years, there's certainly a small element of hit or miss when it comes to consistency of quality of food leaving the kitchen from time to time. Sunday lunch there is pretty good value, at under ten Pounds and is fresh and generally tasty. We've had a couple of issues where not all of the party's meals arriving at the same time - but the staff are always polite and resolve to the best of their ability. They even offered to knock one meal off the bill for not getting it out at the same time - but this wasn't necessary and we paid the value to them as part of the tip for handling the issue so well. Occasionally the steaks do let this place down. It's a shame as 90% of the time they're wonderful, tasty and juicy and not at all overpriced, ranging from around £15 for the rump up to £20 for the fillet. Just paying a little more attention to the consistency in quality of the meat will sort this out, but when it's right (and it is 90% of the time) they are very very nice indeed. The grazing boards are excellent for a light informal snack, if a little on the pricy side for what you get. The home comforts from the menu offer home-style foods, such as fish and chips (little too bony perhaps) sausage and mash (recommended) and an excellent steak burger which is very good indeed. On the whole, the atmosphere, service, and food are perhaps an eight out of ten, but a little too often the amount of customers can make the service and food slip to a six. And if you get a table next to the entrance to the toilets, ask to move! The door bangs shut with an almighty force, which will drive you potty (no pun intended) by the time you leave! But on the whole, not bad, worth a visit or two.
