Luckily, when the main course came, chips and with a chunky steak pie. yummy!! I know this stuff isn't fresh, its all delivered frozen, but boy, it was tasty and cooked perfectly! Gravy oozing out, tasty meat, and peas swimming delightfully in the stuff. I was I had taken a picture, it was postcard perfect. Calorific, stodgy, filling and belt popping, not for some one watching their figure, or not looking to become a miniature satellite orbiting Jupiter. For the price this is what i expect, wonderful taste, affordable, fattening. Good selection of beers and spirits, friendly helpful staff, clean tables, very polite always ask how things are. This is one place I intend to revisit for sure. Love it!! Except I wont have the soggy bread option next time. i would have rated it higher if it wasn't for the poor starter.

They serve food which is typical pub style food which is nice and there are plenty of tables including some outdoor patio tables. The prices are reasonable, the food is good value and the service is usually pretty good too. It is the similar style to the Priory and the Needle and Awl pubs which are all situated within a few miles of each other.

No two for 8.99 here, thank goodness, just wholesome fresh cooked food. The ambiance was quaint and antiquated. With low beam ceilings large comfy chairs. This was a nice setting and fitted with the towns architecture. We grabbed a few drinks announced that we were here and sat down in the pub area. The beer selection was good, with many ales and lagers on tap. A short while later we approached by a friendly lady who gave us some menu's to peruse and asked when we were ready to be seated. She returned a few moments later, asking if we had made our choices, we were a little disappointed, as we thought it was just to give us some breathing space on deciding before we sat in the restaurant. bad sign! We delivered our choices and were seated at the table. Still wearing our outdoor wear. Which we had to put on the back of our seats. The dining area was clean, and quite modern, a real distinct difference from the rest of the pub, though it was done well, even though it looked like we had almost walked into another establishment. I ordered a fillet steak as my main, and i was pleased when it came out, it was wonderful and cooked as ordered. It was delectably succulent and juicy. After an amazing, main course we opted to try the desert. Awful, the crème brulée, was a soggy mess, with very little flavor, yuk!! At all times during the meal, we felt as though we were being spied upon by the servers, as the gravitated around our table like mini satellites. It was not like they needed our table to serve new guests since there were only three diners in the restaurant. Unless the other tables and chairs were part of the decor, who knows? The last point was the bathroom was outside the pub, it was however clean and functional. Overall, pleasant experience, good mains, mediocre service, average pricing at a guess around 30-40 pounds a head, more including wine. I would probably try again, just because it is local.

There are still numerous original features with a large open fireplace, hatch bar which dates back to the 50s and toilets set outside across a courtyard. The restaurant is in a modern extension to the rear. The food was really good, with a more interesting menu than your usual chips with everything pub. They specialise in Fish and I strongly recommend going for it and trying some of the more exotic ones. Service is good with attentive yet discreet staff. Price is quite high but certainly worth it for the quality of the meal. Overall I recommend The Griffin as really good restaurant ideal for special occasions or taking the wife to if you have made a mistake.

First of all, we arrived half and hour early, but had to wait over an hour for our (booked) table. When we finally sat down to eat the food was very very poor. Bland starters, very bad main courses and then microwave reheated puddings. Some of our group had beef and some had chicken, and in all cases the meat was very dry (our beef really was like shoe leather our kids couldn't eat it), while the veg had been cooked to within an inch of its life very soggy. Finally, to add insult to injury, they tried to overcharge us! At £22 for adults and £11 for kids, it was already overpriced given the terrible quality of the food. But quite how they made four adults and two kids come to nearly £140 (without any drinks or extras) is beyond me. And there was no apology when the 'mistake' was pointed out just a begrudging acknowledgment. It's been a long time since I had such a poor Sunday lunch, and given that it was a cut-down 'special' Mothers Day menu they got so badly wrong, there's really no excuse. Needless to say, we won't go back there again, and we'd advise others to give it a wide berth too.
