The burger patties were good, no doubt, and the caramelized onions were cooked perfectly. The problem with the burgers here is the sauce, which tastes simply awful! They use the same sauce for their fries too, which defies all logic... Tip: Scrape the sauce from their burgers, and you've got a pretty good burger!

Luckily, The Burger Project meets all of these qualifications to be a Maginhawa standard. The restaurant is cozy, with seating both inside and outside. You can seat larger parties here but be prepared to be brushing elbows. It helps the place feel more homey. The menu of available toppings and pre made combinations alongside sides and drinks are written artfully in chalk above the cash register and condiments bar. They have this cool template where you can literally build your own burger, customizing everything from the bun to the cheese to sauces, condiments and everything in between! Be warned though, every upgrade comes at a price and it can add up quickly. The standard patty is a very generous serving, and familiar to most Filipino palates, it's a bit on the saltier side. I do, however, appreciate its flavor and juiciness so I don't really think it's a deal breaker. Some standout add-ons to the burgers here include an egg, adobo aioli, a grilled pineapple slice, and garlic cream cheese among more standard and out there choices. I love their fries too! Definitely good for sharing for the size. I recommend the sweet potato fries (₱70), The Animal Style Fries (a nod to In-N-Out's famous fries of the same name), and the garlic aioli fries. They're great, especially the sweet potato fries because they walk a really nice line between kamote fries you'd buy on the street and the sweet potato fries you'd see at more American places.

BRGR: The Burger Project - The Breakfast Burger. A bit sloppy, but the egg, Angus beef, and the bacon all are complemented by the Brioche bun. Good stuff.

One wonderful food haunt I found about a year or so back is H.I.D. Burgers. It's a small burger shop standing inside a Phoenix gas station along Imelda Avenue in Cainta. It's possible to miss it but when you do find out about it, it's impossible not to go back. So what does H.I.D. stand for? Healthy and Irresistibly Delicious Burgers. And I have to say that they do live up to their name's claim. They're healthy because they serve patties made out of 100% chicken meat. No red meat, no extenders. Doesn't sound enticing? Check this out: the great thing about their patties is that they never taste dry, which is normally the biggest disadvantage of using chicken meat in replacement of beef. Another thing I love about H.I.D. is that they use pandesal buns. It's a cute little way of making their burger a bit more Filipino than other burger shops. When you visit (and you really should), try out their Cheesebomb Burger. It's got melted mozzarella and cream cheese! Yummy! I also heard that their Sicilian Burger is delicious. I'm going to try that one out when I swing by one of these days. If you're going this summer, I suggest you take your orders to go as they don't have air-conditioning. They also don't sell any beverages (at least until the last time I checked). Although there is a liquor store just right beside it, I think they should have at least a few drinks on hand. Even bottled water will do.

While there is…read morethat age old adage that you always get what you pay for, some refreshing exceptions arise every once in a while. The Snack Shack, a quaint burger joint that first opened its doors inside of the University of the Philippines, now has a second home just a couple of minutes away from the university. They still serve the same affordable, freshly ground burgers that we've come to know and love, while introducing new menu items, mostly various kinds of grilled sausages. As always, it's better to call or text ahead of time before actually going to the restaurant since the burgers takes quite a while to prepare. You can take a chance and wing it, but be prepared to wait for at least 30 minutes to get your order. The taste is worth the wait but if you're easily bored, you've been forewarned.

That means no melted mozzarella cheese, no caramelized onions and no special signature sauce that claims to be the winner in every bite. I like my burgers with beefy patties, clean and fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions with minimal ketchup and mayonnaise, maybe a little mustard. Anything more and I wouldn't enjoy the burger as much. Fortunately, the Snack Shack offers just that - simple, clean and fresh burgers cooked right in front of you. For less than 150 pesos, I can get a great tasting burger. The only downside is the waiting time that forces you to wait at least 15 minutes, and that's on a good night. This simple, hole-in-the-wall is literally located off the road of V. Luna Extension. You'd notice the place wherever there's a swarm of hungry people waiting to be fed. But for the quality, taste and price, I would wait hours just to have a bite.
