I really enjoyed my haircut today, but this salon's cancellation policy is very unforgiving. You are charged 100% the cost of your service if you miss your appointment. I had a work emergency and was unable to make it to my appointment, but unfortunately that did not matter. I could understand charging 50% of the booking fee, but 100% is simply outrageous. I made another appointment under the impression that the fee would go towards the haircut today, but that was not the case. I am now out $130 for a simple haircut. I was charged $65 for a no show due to an emergency, and $65 for the haircut I received today. It was a great cut, and I enjoyed my stylist, but I'll never be back on the principal of the cancellation policy. If you go here, I would recommend walk-ins only, because heaven forbid you get in a car accident, or your child gets sick. This salon has a no tolerance policy for emergencies. This was the first time I had even visited or made an appointment here, so it has left a very bad impression. read more

Great men's haircut! I was very thankful that they took social distancing guidelines and safety very seriously. After signing in for my haircut, I had to wait outside, which I was glad for, because the lobby does not have the capacity for safe social distancing. The haircut was quick and the stylist, Kayla Woods, was very personable and friendly, and she was able to work with me to get my hair styled exactly as I wanted. I have been going to Barnette's about twice a year for 5 or 6 years. Their service is always excellent; they are always friendly, and they are very reasonable for a salon with an upscale vibe. There are stylists of all different experience levels working there. I choose to get the least expensive stylist each time and have always been pleased with my haircut. I've never had color at Barnette's, but I would expect nothing but excellence from them in that department. I usually can get an appointment a day or two in advance, right around the time that I want. I must add that the smell of Aveda products in your hair simply can't be beat, nor can the mean temple massage my stylist gave me last time. I always have a relaxing and very enjoyable experience at Barnette's. My only complaint is that it can be a bit loud in there with the hairdryers going when you're trying to relax. Afterwards with your great new hair, you can stroll around Banner Hall into Lemuria Books, Broad Street Bakery, or Fresh Ink stationery shop. read more

Loveeee my new hair!! I called yesterday and they were able to give me a next day appointment for balayage. Tanesha is the bestttt at coloring and she did an amazing and thorough job! Even though she took her time, the whole process only took two hours, which is way less than I was prepared to stay for. This was my first time with balayage so I was very nervous but she did such an amazing job I will definitely be recommending to my friends. She is very sweet and welcoming and it was a hands down great experience. Another girl did the shampooing and styling and she was great as well, very sweet. I was able to get a last minute appointment thanks to Mr. Richard ! He was very quick in responding to my message on yelp and very very helpful. My appointment was with Kayla, who helped dye my hair red and trimmed it very nicely. Price wasn't a stab to the wallet either ! $130 for two shampoos , hot towels , full color , trim and straightened. I am so disappointed. I checked several reviews for this salon and I got the worst cut and color of my whole life. My hair is ruined and it will take months to grow out. My hair is now burnt and lifeless and the color lasted less than 2 weeks. I paid $150 and I was stupid enough to leave a tip. I will never return to this salon.. First, I visited the Barnette's Salon in the Renaissance. I loved my stylist! She was wonderful and did a great job. But the reason I am giving a 2 star review is because of the front desk personnel. I was informed by the employee that Barnette's only took cash or checks as tips, and the employee made it seem like a credit card tip was such a hassle. I was also informed that the next time I come I need to have a cash/check tip with me. I was very disappointed. I was informed at the front desk that is was because the stylists have to pay taxes on the tips that come from cards and not from the cash or checks, which I understood, but this is not honest. I would appreciate not being pressured into having to bring a cash or check tip. I do not carry cash. I thought that gratuities should be accepted graciously and not in a condescending manner. Second, I was recommended to Barnette's by a friend who had a great experience at a great price. I saw the same exact stylist that she saw, and we made the exact same appointment (wash/dry, trim, and eyebrows waxes). BUT our prices were completely different. Mine was literally double what she paid for her first visit. This friend also experienced the same issue when trying to pay and leave a tip. read more

I have been a regular at Barnette's Salon (in the Renaissance) for the past 6 years. I love the atmosphere and what the Barnettes have done with the decor... simply classy and beautiful. You're getting more than what you pay for with this salon experience. I love the products they offer. Keraplast, Kerastas, Bumble and Bumble, and Aveda are their main lines. They are seriously my favorites (and I am a product junkie ). Jessica Black has cut and highlighted my hair for quite awhile now. Best haircut I've ever had! She listens to what I want my highlights to look like and she'll tell me what will look best for me and I leave happy! I have seen a lot of her work with hair extensions and let's just say, I don't know why I haven't gotten them yet! She is very knowledgeable, educated, honest, funny, and professional! I have had my hair cut by some other stylists and I haven't been disappointed. Leslie, Emily, Kayla, Jennifer, Lanis, and Lisa are all very well educated and trained. Super friendly stylists! Honestly, this place does not even deserve one star. So. HORRIBLE. It took me years to finally grow the layers out of my hair and get it thick again and this lady completely thinned it out. I cannot even hold it in my fingers it's so fricking thin. You would think when you show a person a picture and tell them everything about your hair they would get it right but NO. COMPLETELY WRONG. Ralph, the owner cuts my hair and I must say, is simply the best ever. You can go longer between cuts because they are perfect. I would recommend this place to anyone. went to Barnette's in the Renaissance shopping center and it was a nightmare experience. Jessica was my stylist and she RUINED my hair! I just moved to Jackson and was excited about trying a new salon. I told Jessica that I wanted blonde highlights, just like I have been getting for years. She foiled my hair then had a new "assistant" wash my hair and told her to mix together some sort of rinse for my hair. The assistant told Jessica she had never mixed this solution before and Jessica started to tell her what parts of the solution she needed to mix. This should of been my first clue that this was not going to end well. After the color was washed out and I was back in the stylist chair I could tell that my hair, even though wet, looked nothing like it should. Jessica began drying my hair and it looked AWFUL!! She had turned my hair an ashy grey/green. She tried to act like nothing was wrong but I kept asking her "why is it all ashy and grey looking." That's when she called another stylist over and that girl told Jessica she needed to run a soap cap through it and highlight it again. Come to find out a soap cap is a bleach mix used to correct bad color and severely DAMAGES hair. Jessica was rude and annoyed during this time. 4 1/2 hrs later My blonde hair had been turned into a dull, mousey brown w/ grey tint, frizzy mess. The receptionist/manager had the nerve to come over and say "It does look much better than it did" The receptionist really wanted me to leave and was very flippant with me and told me "if some did that to my hair I would not want them to trim it" I was not charged for this visit. It looked so bad I cried for 2 days!! My hair is all broken off and I continue to find it all in my bed. I tried 5 or 6 times to call the owner, Mr. Barnette, and he NEVER returned my call. This shows how little he values his customers. I have a new stylist now and he says that my hair has been damaged beyond repair and that it could of been fixed when it first happened but it appears Jessica rushed through the correction process, ruining my hair as she went. Run as fast as you can from this place. The worst experience I have ever had with a business. read more

Ive never written a review before but my husband being a business owner himself urged me to do so. My experience at Barnetts started out wonderfully. Staff was helpful and very nice. I spent a lot of money there in a very short amount of time and was pleased with their work. I won't go into specifics but a problem arose and that's when the staff was no longer helpful to me. They lacked communication amongst themselves and with me. With the amount of money I had spent and would have continued to spend, I would have thought that a call back would have been a simple priority but it wasn't. All I wanted was to make an appointment (spend more money) to fix the problem that i made clear i wasnt holding them responsible for and I felt like I was treated as if i was asking for free services. I dealt with three different people on the matter over the course of two weeks and all three dropped the ball and left me to have to find another salon to fix my problem which will cost me upwards of $1000. The manager was nice and apologetic and I appreciated that, bless her heart... but I had to take my business elsewhere for fear this would happen again in the future if another situation came up that needed attention. My suggestion to this staff is to first: listen to what your client is saying. Really listen. If they had just listened to me, I think there would not have been a problem.
