Since the Barnes & Noble in Co-Op City closed, I've been without a local branch. I wouldn't label myself an avid reader or someone who owns a lot of books, but I enjoy B&N for the browsing aspect. If time permits, I enjoy walking through the aisles seeing what catches my eye, and possibly picking up a thing or two. I recently reviewed a new B&N in Scarsdale which I was a fan of - it's a new prototype store with modern aesthetics and an expanded food section. That being said, I have to give this B&N in Yonkers praise because they definitely hold their own. While it doesn't have as open a feel as the one in Scarsdale or the former location in the Bronx, the store always looks clean and well stocked. It's not the biggest location I've been to, but the tight-knit layout almost makes the store seem cozy (it's hard to explain, just my perception ;-). Believe it or not, they still have a dedicated CD/DVD section, but you'll usually find me in the cookbook section which is quite large with a lot of variety. Staff are usually nice, though I haven't had too many interactions with them. Overall, with bookstores slowly fading away, I'm glad this B&N is still around. If I'm in the area I would definitely be apt to stop in. read more

I like bookstores. I love the smell of new books as soon as I walk in to a bookstore. Give me a book anytime. I'm not fond of reading a book on my tablet. I love my iPad for shopping and completing some work stuff- that's it! Nothing beats a good read on....paper. I totally get that we live in a technology-driven world, and totally get that paper books have been replaced by electronic devices, but where's the flair when you read a book in a tablet? There's something special about reading a classic paper book. In comes Barnes & Noble, the Lone Ranger in all of Westchester. This flagship store has been a staple in Central Avenue, in the Yonkers area for a while. Other bookstore companies, have come and gone, but Barnes & Noble is still standing strong. Everyone at Barnes & Noble is excellent and it's such a breeze to get in and out. If you can't find a book, customer service will gladly locate it for you. Listen, I'm not here to pick anyone with anybody about what's right or wrong, and whether or not you're going to get a bigger brain boost from picking up an actual book. Went last week, nice place and staff but it stinks in the Starbucks. The other reviews are right, they don't kick out the homeless people I saw an employee in Starbucks get berated by a homeless guy. She was defending herself and the other girl while he was berating her and demanded she called a manager. Manager was an old male and ended up siding with the homeless man and didn't say anything to his employee. Young girl with glasses makeup and piercing look like she wanted to cry. Forgot her name but she was very sweet SMH do better!!! read more

One of the last bastions of hope for the people who can't stand the kindle and want to just hold a good book. Barnes & Noble used to have 2 stores on Central Avenue, but the Hartsdale location closed, leaving this as the sole superstore to satisfy the book needs. This place is rather large and has just about anything and everything you could ask for. The have a BLU-Ray/DVD area, a children's area, and practically every possible subject as far as books are concerned. The magazine selection is also pretty decent. They have the "cafe", but I've never needed nor wanted to sit and consume there. Sometimes you won't be able to find older books, but I guess they need to keep room for newer items. They now have toys there as well, but I come here for books only as does my son. Of course, like a library, there are the people who spend hours here just reading books they never intend to buy. B&N allows this unfortunately - just my own pet peeve of buying a book 'new', but you never actually know if some slob drooled in it 2 months earlier. Plus, these people can be in the way and annoying, since some of them camp out in a spot. Not B&N's fault for the slobs and the lazy of this world, but they DO allow it - even encourage it for some reason. The bargain area is still there and at times, you can get a great deal. 9 times out of 10, I've always found what I was looking for and took home an irresistible bargain book to boot. The staff is generally accommodating and friendly. The Blu-Ray/DVD is way overpriced - seriously, if you want a disc, you can get it almost anywhere (online or a competitor) cheaper than what it's priced here. No comments regarding the cafe area since I haven't nor have any intentions of patronizing that. The parking lot in the whole shopping area is pretty blah. There's ample parking, but parts of the lot are a pain due to people not knowing how to do the simplest of things behind a wheel - so use caution. Hopefully this place stays around - I'm sure there are others like me that rather not look upon yet another screen to read a book. I can respect those who prefer the Kindle (and devices like it), but it's my own personal preference to actually hold a good book. There were rumors of this book chain going under recently, but it appears to be doing better now that the results for its third quarter are out. They sell $7 billion worth of stuff a year! CAUTION IF YOU ARE NOT FROM AROUND HERE This place, in the Central Plaza Shopping Center, is on the east side of Central Avenue. This area of Central Avenue can get very congested, yet, people drive by at 60 miles per hour! The police, bless their hearts, are all over the place, especially on Thursday evenings, in unmarked cars, when the kids street race. 'Don't ask me how I know - just be careful! HUGE There are just aisles and aisles of books of all kinds at Barnes & Noble. There are also a ton of little knickknacks and gifts. "High Profit Items" or "Impulse Opportunities" I'm sure they call them back at the Home Office. If you are "a reader," spending hours in here, and accidentally missing, say, a dentist appointment, is really EASY!! PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS Problem 1: most of the books here COST a small fortune! If you have ever been to a library sale where great books sell for pennies, shelling out $45 for some big celebrity's latest ideas may not interest you. When I see a new, expensive book, I always think to myself, "In two ******* years, this book will sell for half a buck at some garage sale!" That's worse than the depreciation on a new car! The solution is to be a disciplined shopper. I have been going to "B & N" (that's what the cool kids call it) for years, but I make a beeline for the BARGAIN BOOKS - and that's where I stay. There are great values in there. NOTE: of course, they are "bargains" for a reason. The type may be small. The book may have an odd size, or subject. 'Just make sure you check the product out before deciding to purchase. B & N makes it easy to hang around. There are chairs scattered around, a magazine area, with places to sit, and, naturally, their infamous "Cafe." Ate there a long time ago. It was okay. Problem 2: If they get busy, and you wanna buy something, it will be awhile before you leave. They gotta ask everybody if they are "in the B & N Club or not" (ugh). Here's a tip, but the last time I did this was years ago, so the policy may have changed: you can pay for the books *anywhere* - even in the cafe. So, if the cashiers are busy, it might be quicker checking out thru the cafe, even tho you don't order a latte. There is a huge new video section. I don't go in there. It's like foreign soil to one searching for a book. Although it's in a giant mall, and parking is usually no problem, with iHOP next door, and Uno Chicago nearby, close spots can be hard to get. 'Go. A place were you would find people of varied ages who are lovers of books. Massive books/ magazines that you can just read while sipping your favorite coffee at their cafe. Besides free Wifi you've got staff that will assist you. The cafe staff are great and friendly. The place is neat and tidy. Also a place for kids .. Since library are seldom seen around the neighborhood. Love their hot veggie soup and varied desserts and coffee... I would recommend this place to anyone. 4 star for the biggest B&N around. read more

Love book stores! B&N is like christmas. Staff were helpful, also weren't breathing on your neck asking if you need assistance, which is just how I like to shop. I found several books and unfortunately had to pick one to read. Gosh I hate having to choose, it's like shoe shopping you can't just pick one pair. I had the BN membership, but felt like is was a useless membership to pay for every year. I tend to get books from Amazon for the discounted prices which is awesome sauce! $25/year isn't much, but the prices of the books in store are a little ridic. Then again I may have been spoiled by the cheap prices for books via Amazon and local shops. :) Anywho, this store location was clean, and was rather busy which was great to see for a change. An extremely massive range of books & tomes located in neatly organized aisles are found in this B&N. You can find a classic novel like Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or a trivial handbook titled "What to do when the S**t Hits the Fan" by Dave Black. There are cookbooks, political ideology phamplets recreated into books, books on how to cure ailments that you really don't have, children's books (there's a whole giant portion dedicated to tikes' readings), books on histories, SAT preparation books, comical books the size of a thumbnail, books for sale, and ... magazines. There is an approximately thirty foot case for every magazine imaginable, where people who don't intend to buy them simply dump them by convenient benches by the windows while they read even more. Better financial decisions can be decided at the local libraries rather than here, however. Consumer mail is littered on the floor as a result of the rampant free readings and an ominous speaker exclaims "cafe" music to either add ambiance or simply subtract people out of the store, which is what a sensible store owner would do. It's not loud, but I think there should never be music at all when there is reading involved. Those who do stay for the over head bleats will find themselves buying an espresso from the Starbucks within. Find a table quickly as they get occupied in no time, purchase a moderately priced cafe sipper and snap onto the store's WiFi. Along with that, grab a novel for later purchase by the quickly working staff, whom are so friendly towards their customers. The one queue for purchases moves with grand alacrity, for your information - no worries about waiting too long to pick up that long awaited novel. There is a public bathroom located to the right & behind of a rather expansive entertainment section with it's own independent security system. In the entertainment dissement, there's music you can purchase, and even sample through their wall mounted system of musical selection. There are films for sale as well in DVD - some indie flicks and a few mainstream movies. Parking shouldn't be a worry, because there is a lot that can fit a hundred automobiles directly in front of the bookstore, underneath a giant movie advertisement sign. read more

I absolutely love the Yonkers Barnes and Noble! It may not be the biggest one around or even the newest, but in my experience the atmosphere is great. Anytime I have gone in there the staff is very friendly and helpful, and they really take the time to help you find exactly what you're looking for. The lines move fast when it's time to check out. The cafe makes the best caramel macchiato and the free wifi doesn't hurt! They also have some great story times and kids events that I have taken my children to as well. Love this B&N. read more

The selection of books, cafe, atmosphere, cleanliness, and people are all excellent.

I was at the store last Saturday buying a gift for someone. It was music related and I am ignorant in that department. I had help from a young woman who's name I think was Amanda or Samantha. She was so helpful and her people skills were top knotch. Also her knowledge of old and new music was remarkable, she informed me that she listens to music on the old vinyl records. So often nowadays staff, especially young staff, in retail have little or no regards for customer service. Working with the public myself, I am always delighted to meet people who clearly love their job and enjoy dealing with people. The store itself is, and has always impressed me, with its layout and choices of merchandise. In short (too late), I comend the management, especially the person responsible for the hiring, for spotting and hiring this young woman and all staff that I have dealt with in the past. read more

Love Barnes and Noble! I've been to a few others and have to admit that this location is not my favorite but it's the closest to my home. The staff is helpful and knowledgable...but they are just as loud as the kids in the store! I know this is not a library but I don't think it's too much to ask to have at least a lower level of noise than you would encounter at the Party City next door. The children's section is bustling and though I don't have children, when I bring my niece here, we always find more than what we're looking for! Their kids events are great as well. There was a Frozen party there this summer that was so crowded!! But my niece had a ball! Loved the singing princesses and the face painting was beautiful! I'd love to see more adult events like on the UWS store, though. read more

It was not in stock. They wasted my time. They are also always very rude and incompetent. I already had a negative experience in this store. I don't know why I went there again. Anyhow this is it. A Barnes and Noble regular today was, however, my first - and last - visit to this particular store. Books were everywhere on the floor, but the staff seemed more interested in exchanging private gossip among themselves than tidying up. Unfortunately I had to take my toddler to the restrooms twice, and they were beyond disgusting!!! After the first time I approached one from the staff, but he just laughed it off?! The second trip outthere showed no improvement what so ever. Several women in the restroom gave up all together using the facilities, because of the lack of cleaning. The idea of customers let alone the staff using such filfthy facilities only to return to browsing books or - even worse - handling foods at the Starbucks section, is extremely disgusting. Needless to say I will prefer any other Barnes and Noble store the next time I am in need of buying books or magazines. read more

This is actually a 3.5 review. It's large enough for most of your trash novels, and lots of fun little games and what not. The cafe has small tables and limited outlets. I like how the music is low enough to be barely detectable, but I hate how busy it gets. read more

Took kids (DD/6 &DS/9) to this Barnes and Noble 11/22 for a Frozen event. The Anna character looked just like the movie but we were disappointed with Elsa! The girl looked terrible and couldn't really sing. The event was a lot of fun,not too crowded and great hand painted snow flakes. My daughter had a nice time. read more

For those that frequent the venue with the intention to read/study: The only tables available are in the cafe area. It is polite to purchase something from the cafe before plopping down for a few hours. There is only one outlet in the cafe area (that I am aware of) Noise level: Can get quite loud, so bring a good set of earphones.. This is one of my favorite places in the world to shop. It is my heaven. There are thousands of books to choose from. The store is well organized and rarely messy. Books are easy to find based on the organization. There is a cafe within the store for those in need of refreshments. A restroom is also available. Magazine racks have hundreds of choices. A section has been set aside for CDs, as well. As a local author, who has reached a milestone with sales in the store in 2015, I am also proud to say they will always carry one of my books, Ghosts and Legends of Yonkers. There is plenty of parking outside and other stores and restaurants nearby, as it is part of a shopping center. read more

The book area is fine. The Starbucks cafe is a disaster !! Never anywhere to sit (on a Sunday ) for me. The Starbucks cafe staff I dealt with are wacked out honestly. They had a sample drink out and I liked it & asked what it was and they had no idea.. How do you not know what drink your sampling out !! They also had blank stares on their face when I was ordering lt was weird. I ordered broccoli cheddar quiche- they burnt the whole top and handed me it like it was nothing / normal. Did I really pay for burnt food. Wow they're horrible. Anyways I won't come back to this cafe. If you want real Starbucks walk outside to the left there is a real Starbucks. read more

I usually really enjoy B&N; but my experience with this particular location today was not entirely positive. I was hoping to get store credit for a book i received as a gift, and when i spoke to the cashier she indicated that their policy requires a receipt no matter what. Makes sense, so I didn't argue at all (although i could argue that i worked in a bookstore years ago and know full well that if a book is brought in with no damage or evidence of use, as long as the store carries it- its really not a problem to issue credit) but then she offered to call the manager. Thinking her offer meant the manager would override the issue, I accepted her offer- but as soon as she called the manager she rolled her eyes and said "we are really strict about this. He's really not going to do anything." Then why would you offer to waste my time and call your manager when i expressed zero dissonance with your policy????? So the 98 year old manager comes over and is curt, short and to the point- he will not issue credit and tells me i should "regift" the ($7) book. Thanks for the consumerism consultation, pappi, but I'm fully capable of autonomous decision making. The whole experience was really baffling and a complete waste of time. I always come to this barnes and nobles even though there is a nearer one to me. It's pretty huge and the cafe is spacious as well. Only thing I don't like is when I go to the cafe to study and read (which is like 4x a week), the staff assigned there wont stop talking. I understand if they need to talk with customers when talking order, but even when there are no customers they wont shut up. Even when no one else in the cafe is talking they are still so talkative and loud. It's disturbing to people who come here to read. It's just so annoying. read more

i always enjoy my time at the noble and while in yonkers on central ave at the central plaza outdoor mall which has plenty of free parking i can't find a better place to waste time while i am waiting for my niece who is at the movies near by. this location is big with a starbucks , books. dvd and cds section , magazine stand , kiddies toys and a section for the kids to sit and have some slob read to them . i have my barnes and noble membership card which gives decent discounts when you buy a book but i really do not need to buy any cause i usually find a nook in the back of the place and read until i get bored or finish reading and believe me i am not the only one, some folks are lying on the ground reading or layed out on the sofa as if they were home. my fave thing about this book chain is that they carry basically every type of book from a to z, and the folks who work here are really friendly. knowledgeable and helpful . the bathrooms are cleaned which is a plus cause after reading almost every magazine while drinking a large organic ice tea it's time to get busy read more
