I received an attitude from someone that obviously didn't like my phone call who then proceeded to tell me. "Ya know you can just go and check our inventory online instead of calling us" Look I understand the Sports Card Craze is pretty taxing on the people working in the retail industry. I try my best to be respectful and courteous to the workers and I receive that 100% of the time from them, except from Nicola. I ended up working here for a while so I wanted to add a couple tips for anyone visiting (as such, I am giving it the same rating as before so I won't affect the overall rating and be considered biased): 1) The main thing I want to point out, that I hadn't realized myself prior to working there - the cafe is a Barnes & Noble Café that *serves* Starbucks items, but it is not actually a Starbucks. That's why you can't use Starbucks' cards and app to pay. That would be like trying to use a Starbucks app to buy Starbucks-brand items from your grocery store. It won't work. They do, however, have their own "BN Cafe" app you can order and pay ahead on. 2) The vast majority of employees want to help you. Unless they are already helping 2-4 people (which is not terribly uncommon), they will most likely do everything they can to help you find what you are looking for. It feels good to find someone the thing they want. On top of that, Booksellers are practically always working there because they love it. They love books. They love talking about books. They love being near books. They love buying books. 3) The mac and cheese is amazing. Like, it doesn't make sense how good it is. I actually probably shouldn't tell you because that means more competition for it, but seriously. And if you bring some Cholula or Valentina's? It honestly kind of ruined me for any other mac and cheese. read more

I don't really like the changes B&N made to their layout, I think it's more cramped and awkward to walk around but I like this store. I haven't ever really needed to ask for help finding anything but I have overheard others getting help and recommendations. The employees all seemed really nice and excited to help. The last time I went an employee was recommending books to a customer and another employee was walking by and seemed pretty enthusiastic to offer more suggestions. Always clean and has clean restrooms, could have more registers open, but it's usually not a long wait. read more

I called desperately looking for a particular book. I had already visited multiple bookstores in town and decided to call the next one before I headed over there. I called Barnes & Noble and asked if they had the book I was interested in stock. The book seller was very friendly and said she would check. It indeed was in stock and had just arrived yesterday. There was only one copy. She said they were going quickly. She offered to go pull it for me and reserve it up front. I know this seems like she was just doing her job but she was very friendly and it was a very busy Saturday afternoon at the store. Wow! That was one of my best ever retail experiences. Judy and Emily are two of the finest employees I have ever had the pleasure to interact with. I came in for the 50% off Criterion sale. I couldn't find my title. Judy was on the hunt. She looked for the movie and went above and beyond. She was friendly and professional and really cared about customer satisfaction. The same can be said about Emily, the cashier. Emily was friendly and informative and professional. The other employees were also fantastic, but those are the two I primarily interacted with. The store had an amazing selection. Everything was easy to find and the store is well-kept. Kudos. I also went to the cafe. The cafe experience was also very positive. I do not recall the Baristas name, but he was a tall, white man with short brown hair and glasses. He was an enthusiastic gentleman. All of these workers made me feel welcome and really care about customer satisfaction. They went above and beyond. They also did mention the rewards program. They did everything an employee should do. I'll be going back to the store for sure! read more

I come to this location now and again. Yea, I like to wander around, browsing, and I am usually in the history, music or art sections. Prices tend to be a little higher, but it is a comfy place and I have sometimes spent hours in there trying to narrow down to 1 or 2 items. I have not used the little café, so I can't really factor that in to my opinion. People have always been nice while I was there. However, some customers with children do not control them and you can see them trying to pretend read and ripping pages or covers. I did see once where a responsible adult grabbed the item out of their child's hands and walked up and immediately paid for it, thus accepting ownership of their child's actions. Impressed I was. Go back? Absolutely, I was there today. read more

My church is starting a book study, and I wanted to get my own copy in advance. Robby came along and offered assistance. He looked where it should have been, where it might have been, then he checked on the computer. Said he could order it, but I politely declined and thanked him. I proceeded to the front to pay for the other books I found, and Robby intercepted me with the one I was looking for. Wow! He never gave up the search, no matter what! He was determined to put that book in my hands. Even though I had found two books to keep me happy, I'm grateful to him to have found the third. Robby was very polite, friendly, and extremely helpful! I've always gone to that location for my in-store purchases, and that wonderful experience has convinced me to do more in-store than online buying. They would do well to keep that young man in their employ. He is a good representation of what Barnes & Noble service should be like. read more

Who goes to a bookstore anymore? Well apparently a lot of people do when I went to visit this location over the weekend. People were lounging a lot in the magazine section and or getting coffee at Starbucks. Overall this location has a very large setup with lots of books to browse and or buy. I did find some potential books to read in the future. However, they tend to be overpriced and I will more than likely get from the library or Amazon. I buy so much on Amazon that I probably own about 10% of the company. Book stores are a dying breed so try to enjoy them while they last. read more

Three years ago, there was someone at the Customer Service desk who knew what an almanac was. Last Saturday, I had trouble finding where they hid the almanacs again. There are now toys where the almanacs were. In a bookstore. So, I found an associate, who was very sweet and eager to help. The conversation went something like this... Me: "Do you know where the almanacs are?" Associate: "I'm sorry, what is it you need?" [I think that maybe I didn't say it clearly or loudly enough.] Me: "AN ALMANAC." Associate: "What is that?" [Suddenly, I'm no longer worried about me.] Me: "It's a book. It tells you all about the year ahead, when to plant crops, what the phases of the moon are, what the planet alignments are..." [Trip to the Customer Service desk computer with associate ensues.] Associate: "How do you spell it?" Me: "A-L-M-A-N-A-C." [Thoughts of singing it 'retha Franklin style go through my head. What are they teaching in schools these days?] Associate: "Oh, they're on a counter. 'Humor and Odd Sorts'." [I looked frantically around at the counters for a sign that reads 'Humor and Odd Sorts'. Don't see one. Next, I look down at my shirt to be sure I took my own sign off before entering the store. Don't see one on me, either.] Associate: "I see the counter. It's back there." [We trudge back not 30 feet from where I originally intercepted helpful non-almanac person.] Me: "Oh, I see them. Thanks." Associate: "Oh good." [Disappears before I could even pick one up from the counter.] I go up to the checkout counter. I wait a good 10 minutes in line for service. Then I realize this $10 copy isn't the edition I want. I was lucky enough to get yet a different PYT for my cashier. This one knew what almanacs were, fortunately. Me: "Could you check to see if you have the cheaper edition that's printed on newsprint, about half the thickness of this one, and has the nail hole in it?" Cashier: "Sure..." [Cashier types in "Do you want to play global thermonuclear war" on her computer, points at something I can't see, and makes a few scrunchy faces at the screen.] Cashier: "Well, I have one that's $2 less, but we don't have it here. It does have fewer pages, but I don't know if it has a nail hole in it because the computer doesn't show us pictures. I can order it for you. It takes 4-5 business days. If it's not the right one, you don't have to take it. Or I can just put a hole in this one for you. (Giggle)" [Smile. Trying to think of a politically-correct nail-and-hole joke that won't get me thrown out of the store.] Me: "So does that mean I could pick it up next weekend?" Cashier: "Yes." [This sounds promising. Maybe I should, I think.] Me: "Go ahead and order it for me then." [I leave the store, not at all confident in eventual outcome.] On a lark, I stop at Lowe's four blocks down. They have plenty of almanacs at the registers. Right edition. $5.95. Sold. [I'll have to start buying my books at the hardware store from now on. Obviously.] read more

I went in here the other day because my boss every now and then likes to have our manager meetings outside of the office. This barnes and noble is close to work and she thought it would be a good place to hang out and have a meeting. Meeting was mid afternoon and when I walked in I headed over to the cafe. I immediately noticed that there was a lot of people. I was thinking ... not sure if this is going to work out well or not?... Anyway another co-worker and I did find 3 small tables and pushed them together and we set up shop. It actually was not as bad as I was expecting and I am sure we will do it again at some point. They have free internet here and I used it. I think due to the amount of other people on their devices other people were using the internet too as it was slow. Took me awhile to do anything. If I was actually working from here, I would not be able to do it because it is just too slow at that time of day. I did not realize that the cafe in barnes and noble is not actually a real starbucks - they just sell starbucks coffee. So if you have a starbucks giftcard they can not take it - FYI. I discovered this because another co-worker tried to use his giftcard. I ordered the chai tea latte. It tasted like pumpkin and was delicious! All in all the barnes and nobel was ok. It's nice to know that during the recession and with competition from Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble is doing so well and doesn't need my money or future business! I walked in to get this weeks issue of Entertainment Weekly with the Seinfeld reunion cover. I stopped reading that rag 15 years ago, but I really felt I needed this issue being the huge Seinfeld fan I am. I looked all over for it and finally asked someone. The cashier tells me all the new magazines are in the back in a box and they can't put them out since their computers are down. And no they can't even get one from the back for me. I was welcome to try another Barnes And Noble though! Brilliant move since magazines have such a short shelf life. Definitely doesn't make me want to go back for anything else. I was actually headed for Michaels but when I saw the Barnes and Nobles I remembered a recent conversation with my daughter about the unique tote bags we had purchased in B&N. Since Austin encourages people to carry their own tote bags I decided to pop in here before I went to Michaels and see if they still had the cute bags with the covers of famous novels on them. I looked around and didn't see any so I stopped at the customer service desk and encountered a very nice young man who told me they didn't carry that style anymore. I also asked about covers for the Samsung Tab A which I had recently purchased through Sprint. I didn't see any of the right size nor any bigger ones in a lavender or purple which I preferred. I did find some cute tote bags in two different shades of lavender for a $1.99 each that had quotes from books on them so I bought two of those and had a nice conversation with the young man about books we were both reading or had read. He gave me a good tip on a book he had just finished about Trevor Noah, Born a Crime is the title. I added that to my book list. I passed on a couple of book titles that I thought he would like and left the store happy with my purchase and conversation. read more

I love books, but I really hate this Barnes and Noble. I have only met one employee who treated me like a human being (I'm not used to getting a lot of respect, being a teenager, but these guys are downright rude). The people are only enough to give 3 stars. My HUGE problem? They have PORNOGRAPHY books in the clearance bin mixed in with CHILDREN books. When I brought that up to a manager I was told that I must have been mistaken, so I showed her the books with two completely naked women on the cover (there were several). She said that there is nothing that can be done. Um, how about you move them? At least separate them from the Curious George books, come on! So, one star. maybe even 0.5 stars. Based on my obsessive-compulsive book disorder, I think it's safe to say that I live, breathe, eat, dream, drink in books. I have stacks and stacks of books lined up against the wall on the floor in the work room of our apartment, books on the arms of the love seat, and books on the desk next to the computer. These are books that I am currently reading. So you can imagine how hard it would be to tear me away from a bookstore, especially Barnes and Noble, and in truth, every time I go in and take a whiff of fresh coffee and the papery-scent of hardcover/paperback books, I undergo hypnosis. I gravitate toward my favorite fiction section, roaming the aisles of authors from David Baldacci to Sandra Brown to Danielle Steel to John Grisham to Jodi Picoult to John Saul and back up the aisles, canvassing the shelves for the latest Dorothea Benton Frank novel or the gentle writings of Nicholas Sparks. I get in a trance when I'm here. I always lose track of time as I get lost in row after row of brand new spines of literature. I will stray to the mystery section for Agatha Christie and eventually find myself in the poetry section, gazing upon volumes of Shakespeare and anthologies of love poems. Nowadays I stick mainly to eBay for my book habit because if I dare set foot inside Barnes and Noble, it would be difficult to drag me out of there, short of setting off air raid sirens. I need to SNAP OUT OF IT. But I can't. The scent, the sight, the feel of freshly printed pages between my fingers drives me crazy. Just writing about it makes me dizzy. I love books. I've always loved Barnes and Noble until today. Yesterday I called the 5601 Brodie location in Austin about an Anthony Bourdain book, titled Medium Raw. This book is sold out practically everywhere due to his recent passing. My husband's a huge fan so I wanted to get him this book for Father's Day. I called and they had 1 copy left, they told me they would gold it for 3 days. I arrived to pick up the book less than 24hrs later and the guy at the counter told me he sold it! That they would call me when another cipy comes in, but he had no idea when it would arrive. So my Father's Day surprise was essentially ruined. He did give me a membership discount on 2 baby books I purchased, but to be honest I don't feel like even giving them that business...and I may still return those books. This was completely unprofessional, I'm an avid book reader and loved Barnes and Noble. But I'll be finding a new bookstore now, or at least a different location! read more

Usually, I have a great experience at Barnes and Nobles. However, today, the cafe was packed and I had no place to charge my phone and laptop, both of which I need to do work. I have a side company where I run a nannying business, so I figured I would be in the clear to sit in the childrens area, where not many kids are charging their laptops and phones... Well, a female, employee (she had a tattoo on her ankle) came and "kicked me out" of the childrens area saying that I was a safety liability. (Are you kidding me?!) I am a petite, young lady - and although I am 25, I look like I could pass for 12. I responded that I had no idea I could not use those electrical outlets that were sitting there uncovered and that I have never had an issue with charging electronics at Barnes and Nobles before...no one has ever told me anything about me being a safety liability in this store nor have I ever been told that I could not charge my electronics in certain areas. Then the employee threatened to call a manager to speak with me about it. I told her that it was not necessary and that I would move, but that the reason I was there in the first place is that the cafe area had no available electrical outlets for use. I have never felt un-welcomed at a Barnes and Nobles until this experience. I will not be buying anything today. This store does not get my business. Let me make a disclaimer. I shop at Half Price. I Craigslist and Freecycle, abstain from corporate coffee (except those damn bottled Frappucinos - damn you Wade for not bottling the Iced Mojo!), and am otherwise a proper, trendy, Austinite snob. But I love this Borders. It's big. It smells like a big bookstore should - scents of particle boards, cheap ink, and thin pages on flimsy paperbacks and over-hyped large print thrillers in badly bound hardback. Ah, corporate publishing presses, how I missed thee. I think. My experiences here are always twisted, Phillip K. Dick style. I go looking for a certain Star Wars paperback (yes, dammit, it's better than Trek, and I'll stab you with my lightsaber for disagreeing), which they don't have. So I ask the info desk lady, who reminds me strangely of my mother ten years ago, ever so helpful but slightly judgemental, and she informs me its out of print until next month, at which point they will have 30. Freaking 30. That's a lot of trade paperbacks. As I walk away to browse for another random sci-fi or fantasy novel to consume, as teenage girl asks El Informacion for a book of celebrity's home addresses. Um, effing creepy! Thankfully, El Informacion denied the child, explaining that people just don't want to pay $75 for that very often. She did NOT offer to order it. DENIED. I'm sure that Zac Efron and Jesse McCartney are thankful, wherever they are. I like Half Price better. I like tiny little small bookstores better, but I don't know any of those here, and they usually don't carry Star Wars paperbacks, either. So this Barnes & Nobles? Well, it'll do, Pig, it'll do. I walked in a little before 7pm. All the lights and music were on, there were customers walking around, and the front door was even propped wide open - all signs pointing to an open store. An employee at the front immediately told me they were closing soon. No hello, just we're closing. I said I know exactly what book I need so I'll be fast. He then rudely said, "You have 3 minutes." He obviously didn't want me there, so I turned around and walk out those wide open doors. I get having patience for stores during covid, but that's a 2-way street. I won't be buying my book here, but I'll rise above the 1-star service I was given and give them 3 Covid sympathy stars. read more
