I have been visiting this store for more than 10 years and I am sad to see it go. The owner is a…read moregentle soul who seems to have been the curator of lost books for many years. If customers take the time to respect his shyness-- he's abt books, not a flashy car salesman there to entertain you --, you will discover his intelligence and dry humor. The reviewer who took offense to his comment: "All of the books are in English if you can read" failed to see the humor in that statement. Because if you cant read, then it doesnt matter what language it is in. Yes, it's cluttered and random, but that's "the thing" abt Downtown Books: it's just used books, not some fancy curated precious, overpriced collection. This place is for everyday learners who can discover and interesting book for $1 and take a chance on being charmed. Downtown Books is about a kinder, gentler world, sorry to see it go. Another "win" for the lonely, generic AI-written Amazon Bezos world.

I love this place. I haven't been in a few years since I avoid Harrisonburg, but when I was in high…read moreschool (and almost completely broke) I would walk to Downtown Books some days after school. The owner was always friendly and didn't seem to mind when I took an hour or more to pick out ten books that cost less than $3. He had an entire wall of used books that started at ten cents. I still have a ton of the books I bought from him; they all have the price stamped on the pages at the top. He also puts neat free posters, books, and postcards outside his store on a card table and rack. A friend of mine still has a picture of a fish in a gumball machine that we got in middle school--and we're 25 now! Go here. Buy books. It's a small store, but it's totally worth the trip.
