The "chippy" has been owned and run by the same family for 44 years, with current owner, Claire Benson, taking over from her parents 9 years ago. Heart, soul and pride are clearly key ingredients. Now granted we'd only eaten breakfast barely two hours earlier but who was I not to give the pregnant lady what she wants?! So it was that she and I found ourselves queuing out the door of this place, figuring that the most popular and nice-looking place on the main street had to be good, right?! (though thinking about it, most of those in the queue looked like tourists so it may have been a case of the blind leading the blind... but anyway!) Inefficient counter queuing system aside, the service was really friendly and with our two mini fish set to take another 5mins the guy kindly offered to split a large fish between us (= cheaper, quicker and more fish each! Boom!). We had them 'open' rather than wrapped up, and the salt+vinegar is DIY so unlike the good old days you can avoid giving yourself a heart attack. Sadly I found the batter too thick in places, so ended up leaving much of this and just eating the fish. The chips were delicious though, as agreed by the envious, healthy-eating friends who soon came over to steal some. There's a proper seated restaurant attached next door but I recommend queuing at the (cheaper) classic chippy counter, then scoffing it by the river 50 yards away.
