The walls spattered with food could do with a wipe. This isn't the mess of a busy day, but prolonged inattention to hygiene. Knives didn't look particularly clean and they were out of forks. We had to make do with plastic chip forks to eat our meals. Even the salt and pepper shakers were dirty. Even before the food arrived, impressions were a little grim. Plaice and chips arrived at our table in a tiny polystyrene tray, fish was dry and burned, chips were dry and bland. My hand got dirty from handling the greasy salt shaker, but there wasn't even a napkin available for us. Horrible. Can not recommend at all.

Now granted we'd only eaten breakfast barely two hours earlier but who was I not to give the pregnant lady what she wants?! So it was that she and I found ourselves queuing out the door of this place, figuring that the most popular and nice-looking place on the main street had to be good, right?! (though thinking about it, most of those in the queue looked like tourists so it may have been a case of the blind leading the blind... but anyway!) Inefficient counter queuing system aside, the service was really friendly and with our two mini fish set to take another 5mins the guy kindly offered to split a large fish between us (= cheaper, quicker and more fish each! Boom!). We had them 'open' rather than wrapped up, and the salt+vinegar is DIY so unlike the good old days you can avoid giving yourself a heart attack. Sadly I found the batter too thick in places, so ended up leaving much of this and just eating the fish. The chips were delicious though, as agreed by the envious, healthy-eating friends who soon came over to steal some. There's a proper seated restaurant attached next door but I recommend queuing at the (cheaper) classic chippy counter, then scoffing it by the river 50 yards away. Pretty good value for the portion size and I didn't regret following my mate's lunch choice at all. Yeah so what if I'm not eating for two?! ;)

First off we had haddock and chips x4 on the first night and with mushy peas, curry sauce and a couple of bread rolls it was tasty, filling and just a great example of a proper British fish and chip shop. The batter was light on the fish, the chips weren't too greasy and at £21 for all this it really was a good value meal too. We returned a few days later when we wanted some chips to go with our homecooked steaks - another good decision - yum! They also do donner kebabs and other greasy specials but this isn't really my area as I try to stay away from anything this contains 'mystery meat!'
