I love barkzone at Montavilla, and so does my dog Bella. You know your dog is treated well when they're SO excited to get there that they can't handle themselves. He whole body wiggles and she barks as soon as she sees it. They're also reasonably priced when you get packages. Just wish they were open a little earlier ;) This place is great! read more

The last two times I tried to get my dogs nails trimmed here, we walked away not having gotten them trimmed at all. A couple of years ago I had an appointment and brought my dog in and the attendant said "I can't do it without help and I'm the only one here." Shortly after, another employee walked in with their off-leash dog which ran up to my nervous, on-leash dog and cornered it. They did nothing about this but watch. Didn't even try to call the dog away. Then still said they couldn't do it even though they clearly had help now. Thought I'd try them again and explained what had happened last time with someone very understanding on the phone. They said we'll make sure there's enough help and to schedule at a time when it'd be low traffic in the shop. Today I show up for my appointment and nobody is here at all. Not answering my phone calls or their ring door bell. We waited around for 30 mins and nothing. Pretty bad experience all around. UPDATE: The still haven't even responded to my voicemails I left 3 days ago. Waste of time. read more

My elderly 8 lb dog has a bad skin allergy. This is the second time I picked her up from this new groomer. They just buzzed off all of her hair to the skin. She is covered in hair and dead skin. I don't know what they are thinking but it is not a $75 haircut. They told me 1-2 hrs and I had to call after 5 hours. I had been bringing her to Bark Zone for at least 4-5 years and this never happened until they hired a new staff. I will have to wash her now with enzyme shampoo to soothe her skin and clean her off. They also raised the prices and the girl that handed her off to me just looked at me with a blank stare. No explanation as to her state. No updates. No customer service skills. On the quick ride home my jeans were covered in dead skin and hair. Wtf. Never again. read more

They have cut our Pitty's nails. They are patient and kind with him. Great experience for him

After two serious incidents, we will never ever trust this place with our dog again! During the first incident, while we were overseas, we saw their missed call at around 2am with no voicemail or email. We were extremely frightened, especially since we had previously been told they would only call in the case of a serious emergency involving our dog. I spent that time repeatedly calling them back in distress, but no one answered! It took nearly an hour to finally reach someone. We later found out they had mishandled our dog's food storage and we had to urgently purchase new food at our own expense to ensure our dog was fed. The lack of communication, accountability, and basic responsibility in this situation was unacceptable! The second incident was far worse. Just three days into our trip, we received a voicemail saying our 7 lb dog had been involved in a fight. We were initially told that a large dog pinned her down during mealtime. We specifically requested a written explanation of what happened and asked for photos. While they did send photos, they never provided any written explanation. (Not surprised!) Instead, we only received a phone call from a manager, and later, when we picked our dog up, we were given a completely different version of events. The refusal to document the incident in writing, combined with conflicting stories, raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability. After picking our pup up, we discovered bite marks and eye infection following. The fact that dogs of all sizes are mixed together, especially during feeding, shows extremely poor judgment and unsafe handling practices. On a side note, their website/storefront stated we could pick dogs up during break time, but they will charge a fee. We tried to do that once, and the staff showed up rude and fed up insisting us picking up during business hours. Crazy! We are just so incredibly fortunate that our dog is safe, but this experience was completely unacceptable. Between the lack of communication, inconsistent reporting, and questionable safety practices, we strongly advise others to think twice before trusting this facility with their pets! read more

my dog absolutely loves going to barkzone! She loves the staff so much, I appreciate that I can drop her off for daycare whenever I need. They are also open on holidays Wich is very convenient. The staff are very polite and easy to talk to me and my dog are always greeted with a smile. I enjoy that they tell me about her day when I pick who she played with what she did during the day. shout out to barkzone! Should totally go check them out they also have live web cams if you'd like to check on your pup! read more

I filled out everything online for my dog to be boarded for 1 night. I got an email confirmation. It said "thank you for boarding with us. It said "we look forward to seeing you soon. It had her drop off and pick up dates and times. So I packed up her food and vaccine records and went to Bark Zone. The woman who greeted me clearly hates her job and acted very annoyed to have a customer interrupt her cell phone time. After tapping on the computer for a few seconds she told me I didn't have a reservation. When I showed her the email confirmation she told me that meant nothing and claimed to have sent me another email explaining that my dog would need and evaluation and a Day of daycare before boarding. I searched for all emails from Barkzone and the only one was the confirmation that she refused to honor. (See photos.) Against my better judgement I decided to call back a week later to see about getting her all approved so I could take her there for boarding next time. I called and (started to) say I wanted to schedule an evaluation and Day of Daycare to get my dog approved for boarding. Before I could even finish she interrupted me and told me in a rude tone that I needed to fill out their online application. I told her I already did that and she asked for my name and my dog's name. She then searched and found nothing. I asked her why I had an email from them. That's when her tone turned even nastier and she said that was just the boarding application and I need to fill out the daycare application! She acted like I'm an idiot and should have known this. But when she searched my name why didn't she find the forms I HAD filled out?? She said she found nothing! This place might be ok other than one horrible employee but since the only thing I have to go by is two very bad interactions with a rude, & lazy person who doesn't care about her customers I will never use this place. read more

My wife dropped off our pup to enjoy some R&R because we were busy and we wanted him to play with his new friends. An hour after she dropped him off we got a phone call saying, "your dog got scratched by some dog play and you need to come back and pick him up". At first we weren't alarmed because we understand things like this can happen. What we weren't expecting was a wound requiring surgery and 7 staples!!! The doctor explained this was not a "scratch from dog play" but obviously a deep gouge from chain link fencing or some other metal object! When we tried to contact the management we were met with, "sorry, things happen". When i asked to talk to the owner i was told he would call me. (THIS NEVER HAPPENED). My wife did receive a curt email from the owner reiterating they're not responsible for injuries sustained at their daycare. I attempted a dozen times to speak over the phone to the owner and i could only talk to a couple employees. They were beside themselves in disbelief that the owner wouldn't at least call us back. Multiple employees explained they were aware that the chain link fencing was the problem and that other dogs had been injured and the owner paid the vet bills. If fact, i was told directly after my pup was injured they finally did fix the fencing. Problem was, i had a $600 vet bill, no apologies, not even a courtesy phone call back. After 3 MONTHS, A DOZEN PHONE CALLS and talking to a very kind employee, they finally agreed to give me a check. Obtaining that took an additional three phone calls to locate the "checks in the mail" line and when it arrived it was only for HALF the vet bill. Thanks?!? I do not understand why the owner wouldn't just call me back and we could have just figured this all out. I don't understand why the owner wouldn't accept responsibility for an injury caused by maintenance neglect at his facility for a KNOWN problem. All the employees i did talk to were very nice, reasonable and very understanding but their "hands were tied". I felt awful for them and they just kept apologizing. Thankfully, my little buddy made a full recovery and is back to his goofy playful self. It pained me to see him hurt and unable to move freely for 2 weeks with his injuries. Accidents happen, I'm ok with that... but lack of accountability and compassion for an injured animal I'm not ok with. read more

Been client of barkzone since my groomer relocated from a dog wash shop located on Sandy blvd. unfortunately after 4 years of services. I received a call from the front desk assuring me that I have been fired as a client. when asked why this decision was made. She told me the groomer JESSICA Made this decision and forgot to let me know after she serviced my dog last. When asked to speak with Jessica just to clarify if what I was hearing was correct the receptionist hung up on me and said " YOUR NOT WELCOME OR ALLOWED HERE Bye" I called back and she answered and I could here her speaking in the background to someone who I thought was a coworker " OMG WHY IS THIS LADY CALLING BACK" Jessica gets on the phone and was like I'm not servicing you anymore your taking money out of my pocket when you don't show up for your appointments and I can't pay my mortgage and we don't get paid enough working here. Mind you every time I call to schedule I'm scheduled incorrectly or sometimes not even put on the schedule at all. If your looking for a professional environment don't even bother! These people just want the money the place and don't even care for the animals properly ! PLEASE SEE PHOTOS ATTACHED OF INJURIES MY DOG RECIEVED FROM GETTING GROOMED LAST YEAR. I took my Lab here for a temperament test after we moved to Portland. My dog has been to 3 other daycares with no problems, and he is very well behaved and not aggressive at all. We got a call a few hours into the test telling us our dog had failed because he ate poop. What Lab doesn't eat poop? I proceeded to say that there is no way there is not a single dog at your daycare who doesn't eat poop, and they said that yes there are, but they are allowed here because they didn't during their temperament test. So they eat poop now, but didn't on their first day. This is shameful. The fact that my well mannered and sweet Lab couldn't go here for this reason means they've got bigger problems. Maybe instead of punishing dogs for this, they should try and keep their place cleaner and monitor when dogs go to the bathroom and clean up after them faster. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

The two stars are to give credit to the large facility and the fact that they have live stream cameras. I took in our puppy for an evaluation period. The employee was mostly pleasant. It was communicated via email that drop-off is at 7:30am and pick-up would occur between 11-11:30. When asked if I had questions, I tried to confirm the pick-up time. She then told me "Oh, we've changed that. It happens between 1-1:30 will that work?" Not a huge deal since I had the day off, but it would have been nice for that to be communicated before the drop-off. If I would have happened to have a busy schedule that day this new development would have completely derailed plans. I watched the webcams extensively throughout the day. I don't expect there to be a person on the floor 100% of the time playing with the pups, but I was surprised to see such a lack of human involvement. When I did see someone, 85% of the time they would just be walking to get to point B from point A. My pup was overwhelmed (new place, understandable), so she just sat at the door to the lobby for most of her stay barking and calling for anyone. It would have went a very long way to have somebody to check in with her and give her some attention. It MAY have happened during the times that I was not viewing. I'll concede that. I was surprised that I didn't see the outdoor area utilized at all. It was a 90 degree day, so that could be the reason, but she was there in the morning when it was a mild 75 degrees. At one point during the day they crated the dogs for an hour and a half. I could understand this if I was boarding, but the goal was for my girl to get some exercise. I showed up at 1:05 for the pick-up and rang the doorbell. The groomer answered the door, and said "We're closed between 12-1:30. She should be back at 1:30", which led me to believe that the coordinator left the site (back up staff I assume were on hand). I said that I was told to pick-up between 1-1:30, but gave them the benefit of the doubt and said that I must have misunderstood. When finally getting into the lobby, the pick-up was unorganized and took 15 minutes after I entered the lobby (This was not including the time spent in line to enter the lobby. I expected that). I would not recommend Bark Zone to anyone. We thought we'd give it a try because it's closer to our residence than our regular daycare that is close to our place of business. read more

I took my dog there while I went on vacation. He was there for a week and when we picked him up, he had kennel cough. I asked if they would reimburse me as vet bills can get expensive. They said " no". read more

Stay away from this place if you have a small or gentle dog! I brought my dog in here for the second time (first time cameras were down) and watched on the webcams while my 15 lb dog was pinned to the floor repeatedly by two large dogs and mounted by a third. After watching this happen again and again for an hour and a half, I jumped in my car to get my dog out of that situation before she wound up traumatized or injured. Not once did staff ever intervene. I watched the staff play on their cell phones and twirl around a mop like a baton but no one could be bothered to help my clearly terrified dog. They make no attempt to separate out the aggressive dogs from the non-aggressive ones ...so much for temperament testing and "safety. always". On top of all that, my dog came home soaked in urine. read more

Barkzone has been great for me and my dog. She doesn't go often, 1x a week. I like the staff, they're friendly and good with my dog. I do not expect to see staff out on the floor playing with my dog. If my dog is laying around or gets up and I see her walk across the floor I get pretty excited! She's not at home alone and that's plenty for me! She has been with just me her whole life so she can get overwhelmed so I also appreciate crate time. Its like nap time at daycare. She mostly just walks around or lays on the sidelines. That's awesome! I appreciate the flexibility and the price is affordable for me since I only need it sporadically so I'm happy it's there. I always tip because I appreciate that these kind folks are willing to do this job. Feel free to be on your cell phone! As long as there is proximity I'm good! read more

I love this place. They did a great job with my Yorkie. I definitely will be back for his grooming!

The best thing about this facility is the webcam, and I will explain why in a little bit. A week ago, we had to drop off our 6 month old lab/hound mix pup unexpectedly at BarkZone Montavilla. After calling early in the morning to see if they could accommodate our pup, we were able to get in without a reservation. The attendant at intake was extremely friendly and excited to see our little guy. In the middle of the afternoon, I got onto the webcams to see how my pup was doing and was horrified at what I saw. One of the attendants was surrounded by a pack of dogs, and a little black dog jumped up on him when his back was turned. The attendant turned around, aggressively picked up the dog by the scruff of his neck and proceeded to carry him, by the scruff of the neck, off camera somewhere. He returned shortly thereafter and continued to walk amongst the rest of the dogs, some of whom were jumping on him in the same manner as the black dog that was punished and carried off. This black dog wasn't seen on camera again for at least an hour. I noted the time of the incident and reported my concern to the attendant who was staffing the counter when I picked up my dog. I stated that I couldn't be certain if it was my dog that was mishandled, but if it was I was extremely concerned and even it wasn't I was still equally concerned. My dog is still a puppy and if he startled the attendant, that's understandable, but there are ways to address issues like this, and how he handled the situation was extremely unacceptable, inappropriate, and could have hurt the dog. The staffer was very understanding and told me that she would ask the manager to review the footage (doubt he did) and would ask him talk to the attendant about the incident (doubt that happened either, and I haven't had any feedback about the incident). Whenever I drop my dog off at daycare, any daycare, he doesn't want to leave. This time, he couldn't get out of there fast enough. When we got home, he ran into the house and started whimpering in a corner, a behavior I have never seen him do and to what I could only attribute to was due to physical abuse therefore affirming my belief that it was my dog that was punished. Luckily, he hasn't developed a fear of humans, and we've been getting him out and socializing him and having him meet as many people as possible to ensure this isn't imprinted on him. Again, the best thing about BarkZone is the webcam. If it wasn't for the webcam, I would have never known what happened or why my dog acted the way he did when he got home after daycare. After this incident, I cannot and will not in good faith recommend this facility. My dog will not be coming back here. read more

Nothing but praise. My energetic 120 pound dog loves going to get groomed at Bark Zone. Best part is when I pick him up he isn't a cowering, nervous wreck. My dog enjoys playing here and I love watching her on the cameras. However, almost every time I check in on her, the handlers in the yard are on their phones. I understand that things may come up where a handler might need to be on their phone, but it is concerning to see it happening so often. Inattentive handlers can lead to dog fights breaking out, dogs getting curious about messes in the play area, and a number of other unsafe situations for our pups. read more

I used to be a fan of this place but after watching the cams recently and observing my dogs behavior before and after pick up I will not longer be going here. I am not insisting that the handlers there play with my dog always, but have consistently seen them standing around, and ignoring my dog when she went up to them. Additionally, their 1.5 hr crated "nap time" is bs. If I wanted to crate my dog for 1.5 hours and leave I could do that myself. Would highly recommend doing more research on other dog daycare before you take your dog here, the prices aren't competitive and they clearly don't prioritize stimulation or play for the dogs. read more

We love BarkZone! We have a year old Vizsla who has so much energy and loves coming and playing and running with all her dog pals and the staff. Often, I check in with the staff on her behavior during the day and they always give me detailed information about what dogs juniper played with, if she ate her lunch, and any other pertinent stuff. I've also used their grooming services and have been very satisfied with the results! Juniper comes home so tired and happy every time. A HERZO TO A ZERO (REVISED) *****UPDATE 10/21: I spoke with management at BarkZone about my most recent experience. Management expressed sincere regret for what happened and assured me that this is not how staff are trained. She reassured me that my past experiences of excellence at BarkZone is how they always strive to operate and that they would like to show me that again and again in the future. With this recent contact, I am very pleased with their response and commitment to excellence. I am revising the review from a 1 star to 3 stars and I will give them another chance in the future and hope to have the chance to write a 5 star review at that time. ***** 10/15: I could not be more displeased with BarkZone and the lack of caring that was given. I boarded my dog for over two weeks and wish I would have gone to a different business. When I dropped my dog off, the front desk staff was "cold" to say the least. She simply took my dog from me and walked in the back. When I tried to look thru the window to the play area she snapped at me and yelled "NO! The owner said no one can look thru any more due to complaints" and then pulled the drapes over the window. When I asked if she could give my dog one pill in the middle of her stay she just took it, wrote my dogs name on it and tossed it in the back of a drawer (doubtful my dog ever got the medication). I also asked to put an emergency contact down since I would not have cell service and asked if (like in the past) the staff could take pictures and email them to me of my dog while I was gone. The lady said they would do that....shocker that it never happened. During my time away, I did not see my dog on the web cams from the BarkZone website with the exception of the one time I had cell service and called them to inquire about this. I checked multiple times to see my dog but had no luck. I even had my emergency contact looking every day and they did not even see my dog once in over two weeks. The highlight of the misfortune of BarkZone is when I picked my dog up. The front desk lady was even more "cold" (trying to be polite) than when I dropped my dog off. I mentioned I was there to pick my dog up and the staff just walked away without saying anything. It turns out she went to get my dog but offered no explanation causing confusion on my part as to what was happeneing. When she got back she said that I had a balance due for grooming. I let her know that before I even had my dog stay at BarkZone another staff sent me an email stating everything was paid for including stay and grooming with the exception of any additional items that I wanted added which ended up being nothing. She just said she would send the groomer a message while not even looking at me but rather staring at her computer. I also asked where my dog was kept while I was gone and asked if she was kept in the back room or the outside areas that do not have cameras which would explain why I never saw her. The staff lady said "As I explained before, your dog is on the main daycare floor every single day with all of the other dogs." All this while she did not look at me once but rather just stared at her computer. I mentioned I thought it was odd that for two weeks I only saw her after calling one time and she just seemed to brush it off. I am not a "regular" at BarkZone like some people that leave their dog at daycare, but I am (or was) a loyal customer that loved this place as Lazy Dog, Crazy Dog and even as BarkZone when the new ownership took over. Sadly this is no longer the case. The staff now appears cold, careless and disconnected from the customers both two and four legged alike. I want the level of caring and love back that the previous staff gave. I will not be recommending this business to anyone like I have in the past and will now sadly be looking for another place to keep my pup in the future. You have truly gone from a hero to a zero. read more

I used to go to this place when it was Lazy Dog Crazy Dog and I hadn't been back since it was purchased by The Bark Zone and I am not sure I will be back. I made my reservation for day care and boarding on Friday for the next day. I had received an email from them telling me that one of my vaccines for my dog was outdated so I made the appointment that afternoon. About 4:30pm that afternoon I get an email stating that I needed to come bring by the full deposit for my reservation because they fill up quickly and couldn't guarantee the space. (What is the point of a reservation if I have to make a separate trip there to pay or if you can't guarantee my spot via phone only?!?) Also, if you needed a deposit-how about telling me that while I'm on the phone instead of sending a passive-aggressive email. I decided to take my chances because I didn't have time to make another trip. It was fine. I brought my dog in Saturday morning and the whole place just felt less happy. Thank God for the person who came to get him because they were friendly and kind and from the LDCD days. I dropped him with feeding instructions 1/2 cup (which I knew he wouldn't eat) but gave about 4 cups of food just in case some got spilled or I decided to add a day to his stay. When I picked him up, they returned his food dish completely empty without any explanation. When I asked about it they told me he ate it. Never in the history of my 17lb dog would he eat 4 cups of food!!! Also when we got home he drank water like he hadn't had water for a day and had a few bites of food. Not sure what happened and maybe they were off their game and still finding their footing with the new location, but it was unimpressive to me on this visit. read more

This has proven a great option for dog boarding, as it seems they most often have availability, even during busy times around Holidays, which is really nice. It's not so much a place with all the "bells and whistles" but my dog seems to do well here and from some of their practices and policies I've observed, what they do is really in the best interst of the dogs. I spent 2 years working at a really well run doggy daycare and learned a lot about what goes in to keeping dogs safe and preventing incidents. That being said, I know what can happen behind the scenes and I'm pretty picky with who's hands I leave my dog in. The one concern I had after picking up my dog most recently was that the staff didn't know which dog was mine. I understand they can't necessarily memorize everyone's dog, but it was kind of strange after telling them my dogs name, breed, and color, that they still didn't know which one he was. The guy at the front desk even looked up in the computer to see if they had a picture, which they did not. In terms of managing the dogs I would think it's pretty important to know the dogs names. In any case, my dog seemed happy and I like to think maybe I just arrived right at a staff transition or shift change or something. read more
