No other service beats this one in all of Hawaii!! The way they train dogs (big, small, young, old, etc.) is so thorough and effecient it leaves me speechless! Took my puppy in once he was old enough and had all of his shots and within FOUR weeks he was calm and well-behaved on outings. No pulling on the leash or accidents in the house, they are amazing!! Knowledgable but they wouldn't use are slow down bowls. 2 labs and they eat so fast. We picked them up at 9:30 and they hadn't been fed. I'm not sure why they asked on there form what time do you feed them. I put down 7am. But great videos of our boys. read more

I WILL NEVER BRING MY DOG HERE AGAIN!! On the rare occasion you must board your pet, when you have no other options for care, most would turn to a doggy day care of sorts to care for and watch over your furry friend.  Bark Bark Backyard is one of the very few options on our little island of Kauai. The space is rough looking at best, situated in a rundown warehouse in Puhi and fairly unkempt with misplaced items strewn about the kennels.  There exists a small fenced "play" area to socialize the dogs, a pair of old and rundown treadmills and an awful stench of urine.  At first glance wearing rose colored glasses, it would give the appearance that your dog might have a little "fun" in their care being played with, socialized, walked, and fed.  Sadly this is not the case at all, for the mere 5-10 minutes your dog may have in an active state, most of their time is locked up in kennels situated practically on top of one another.  To make matters worse the dogs are yelled at constantly to "shut up" when they wine or bark.  The long haired, tattooed stern man, who by his own admission is one of the owners, leads in this behavior.  We were scheduled for a few days of doggy day care and after the first apprehensive day, surrendered to a second before we became aware of this irrational behavior, witnessed first hand.  The self proclaimed co-owner is in the wrong profession, hasn't the temperament to work with or care for animals and is extremely rude to customers.  Our dog came home traumatized, timid, famished, filthy, and starved for affection after a few short hours.  Claims that our dog "didn't eat" at feeding time left a quandary as to what happened to more than half of his homemade food, and where the container and cooler had been misplaced; and, had to be searched for showed a gross lack of organization and consideration.  The manner in which they receive and release dogs would appear to have some order, however, they insist on you remaining in your vehicle and demand they alone leash and walk your dog into their space. With the limited and tattered signage they have, new customers may or may not be aware of this procedure.  Upon walking up to the establishment to view our dog in his kennel, prior to picking him up, this co-owner yelled profanities in an extreme and distasteful manner to my husband.  We had to return after picking up our dog to receive our food container and cooler as the co-owner insisted he could not find it.  It's fair to assume that if they treat their customers in such a hostile manner, that your dog, your best friend and family member may receive similar treatment.  Sadly for Kauai, there remain few options for care, however, pet owner beware. As for us we will NEVER take our dog back there...!!! read more

I saw their employee hit my dog repeatedly on the head. I had just arrived to pick her up from day care and she was jumping and excited to get out of her pen, and the employee had already gotten the choke lead on her. I watched the employee corner her and hit her 4 or 5 times to (unsuccessfully) try to get her to sit. When confronted, they told me to talk to their boss, which I did. He told me that this was an appropriate response, and was part of their training methods, and that I was just "uninitiated" and didn't know what I was seeing. My family ran a boarding kennel, bred and trained border collies, trained service dogs and operated an obedience school. We never hit excited or jumping dogs on a leash. I know they don't use positive reinforcement training but I didn't think they would use this kind of excessive and inappropriate force on my deaf dog. Though I would not call what I saw their employee do to my dog "training," it's definitely not compatible with how I've been working with her and my dog trainer. I had seen the owner grab another dogs head and shake it while yelling because it looked to one side while on the treadmill, so I'd seen other instances of what seemed like inappropriate force in the month I'd been bringing her there for day care. read more

Have used Bark Bark several times for our two dog's and absolutely love this place. Our dog's are not stressed about going there, get plenty of attention, walks and exercise on the treadmills. We have peace of mind leaving out family members here. read more

I've brought my dog here twice. Great facility, caring workers. The first time I had to leave on 12 hrs notice and they took my pup even though they were full. The second time she had a uti and they brought her to the vet for me! Bella the dog loves it here and I highly recommend them. They even send videos of puppy play time. We love BARK! BARK! Backyard! We take our mini aussie here once a week for daycare and he absolutely loves it! I work at Kapaa high school as an EA with some behavior control. I Feel like when i take my dog here that he has the structure, exercise and socialization that he requires and he comes home exhausted and happy! I feel like the owners and their staff train the dogs to the way they want them to behave/act. We have seen a huge difference in our dog from just taking him for a month once a week. we would recommend this place to anyone! read more

Great place for boarding. Handlers are friendly & knowledgeable. My only two complaints are there is nowhere for the dogs to run, the are taken out on a short walk, leash on to potty. They work them out on treadmills, which is ok I guess, as long as your dog isn't scared of this! Secondly the are pretty expensive considering you have to bring your own food. read more

Exceptionally kind and talented owners/trainers - our dogs love the place just as much as we do. We started out with bootcamp for our two dogs after they moved to the island and were having some behavioral issues after the change. Karen & RJ have been with us every step of the way, and our dogs are now no longer pulling on leashes, excessively barking, etc. One of our pups had major anxiety and social class has really helped him learn how to greet other dogs. His tail wags instead of staying stuck between his legs. We take the dogs two days a week to day care because they love it so much and because we know they get great physical and mental exercise. They leap out of the car and enjoy being with all of the handlers. Working with Bark Bark has helped us understand and communicate with our dogs better today. AND, the facility is kept neat and clean - beds and crates are washed after use, there are no communal water bowls, and we see them taking the best of care to keep our dogs safe and healthy. We go to two vets on island and both of them also love Bark Bark. They have a stellar reputation for a reason - no one else on island does what they do for dogs and their owners. We are sooooooooo thankful to have met Karen & RJ from Bark Bark Backyard. We have 2 dogs (both with special needs) and have been using Bark Bark since Feb/March 2015. We rescued a hound mix from the humane society in January. What we thought was simply a 'shy' dog, ended up being 'the great unknown'. Her only emotion was fear, and a lot of it. Not aggressive fear, but weak and very submissive fear. Disabling fear. She was found abandoned in Koke'e State Park. Her behavior suggested that she was regularly abused and/or out in the wild on her own. We are HUGE animal lovers and thought that if we just showered her with love, she would come around. Nothing we did worked. She would not bark, go potty, come in house, walk with us on leash, take treats, nothing. She found a corner in the house and sat there and shook all the time. I can't really remember how we heard of Bark Bark (maybe Natural Pet). But after a month+ of zero progress with our new family member, we called Karen and made an appointment. She was very thorough and professional with us, and she did a great job asking us questions that would help her and her team help our new family member, and us. We were a bit 'weary' of dog training as we really didn't know anything about training and rehabilitating dogs. We thought 'love' was the answer. But we were wrong. We started our fearful girl at Bark Bark and were immediately happy with the results....Although they were baby steps, we were heading in the right direction. We knew it could take years, if ever, to bring this fearful girl around. They only time she showed any excitement was when she saw other dogs. So we had the bright idea of adopting a 3 month old puppy to try to teach her how to be a dog. At first that was going great. But within months, our new puppy (pitbull, healer, terrier mix) started showing signs of dominance. Because our hound is soooooo fearful, weak and submissive, other dogs tend not to like that and they want to dominate/be aggressive. Guess it goes back to wolf pack behavior. So now we have 2 new dogs, both with their own 'special' issues. One presents with fear/weak/submissive....one presents with fear/super excited puppy with some dominance/aggression. Walking our pitbull was a nightmare. Because of our 2nd dogs mix breed, we wanted to address issues we were/are having immediately and we knew Karen and RJ could and would help. They teach us skills and techniques that we use with both dogs to help each of them become the dogs we want them to be. I could go on and on about all the training, handouts, exercises, meetings, etc..... But long story short...... These guys know their stuff. We are now almost 3 weeks into a new training program that provides good structure for our new dogs and is helping to establish us as the pack leaders. Dogs need to be led. They want a pack leader. We just never knew how to be that pack leader. Smothering them with love, affection and freedom was/is not the answer. It is a lot of work and we sometimes get frustrated, but we know if we stick with the program, eventually we will have the dogs we want. And they will be happier and feel safer with us. We are still very new to this and have a lot of fear of our own to work through, but we are putting in the effort and it is paying off. We are seeing results. More people should use their services. Perhaps then, less dog owners would give up and take their dog to the Kauai Humane Society. Bark Bark provides excellent, caring and effective rehab, training and boarding. And they have fair prices. As people, Karen & RJ are super great. They tell it like it is. And they give you the tools to be successful. They do not have a magic wand. They have to put in the work and so does the dog's owner. And so do the dogs. Although we have a long way to go, we have come so very far. We look forward to the journey and to having an amazing family. Mahalo Karen & RJ.
