I might invent an updated version of the Only Fools and Horses song that plays during the end credits, since they list off their many bargain wares. For a wide range of products, this place isn't bad. Aside from selling the tourist tat that most bargain stores in Edinburgh display, they've got some imitation brands, garden equipment and cheap as chips electrics, just to give you an idea of the broad spectrum. I wouldn't trust any electrics from a pound shop, but for things like earphones you can be pleasantly surprised for a short lived period of time. Needs must in these purse pinching days of the recession, but it's a bit too much of a tacky overload for me. I'm sure if you rake through this place with a fine toothed comb you'll find something of use, but mostly it's a bit much! But since they bear the Only Fools ethos of bargain selling, it's a guarantee you'll find "cut prices at a stroke!"

There is a whole part of the shop dedicated to Polish goods; something that will be valued by Edinburgh's large Polish population. Places selling Polish goods are scattered across the city, and leads to me to wonder about experimenting with some Polish cuisine some time. All told, this is a great bargain shop. It's always worth checking out their stock, as they sometimes can be cheaper than the supermarkets for some items.

Especially if you want to see the volcanic plug under the castle. The best views of it are from here. It's also where you can make your way up the Vennel Steps to see the old defensive walls of the city. There are even two or three different ways that you can get to the castle from here. The Granny Green Steps are located on the west side of the square. It will take you up to Johnston Terrace where you can take another set of stairs called Castle Wynd North up to the castle. The second option is to take the Castle Wynd South path in the middle of the square which will lead into the Patrick Geddes Steps and directly to the North Steps. Another way is to walk up West Bow from the square to Victoria Street (also in Grassmarket). Take the stairway up to Victoria Terrace and then make your way up to the steps at Castle Wynd North or to the Royal Mile. You'll get a different perspective of the Grassmarket area and the castle from all angles. We visited it daily. We even passed through it on our way to Greyfriars Kirkyard via Candlemaker Row. The National Museum of Scotland is also easily accessible from here. The square in Grassmarket is the perfect meet up location. There's a lot of dark history here as well. It was one of the public execution sites that included the unsuccessful one of "Half-Hangit Maggie Dickson" in 1724. There's a bar at the square named after her. You'll also see a memorial written on the stones of the square for the last person (James Andrews) to be hanged at the gallows there on 4 February 1784. All creepiness aside, it's a very lively and active place that you'll pass through at some point. I mean, how could you not? This particular branch is near my work so I often pop in when I need some batteries, cup a soup, Christmas decorations, anything basically. If I need something I can usually find it here. The staff are always friendly and keen to help. The shop is spread over two floors. On the ground floor you have toiletries, food and drinks, linen, stationary and kids toys etc. The floor below is the home section; kitchen utensils, lamps, cushions, storage boxes, door stops and everything else for your home you didn't realise you needed. Obviously the quality of some products isn't fantastic, but the shop doesn't try to be something it isn't. You get what you pay for!

Many clothes were damaged, and the tag did not mention the damaged item. I understand that items are vintage, but it should be disclosed of the condition of the clothing. The v store was very hot and packed with people. I was unable to look at everything because shoppers kept bumping into me or cutting me off unfortunately. The clothes were not very organized either. It was hard to look through them. If they did crowd control and limit the shoppers inside, I may have had a better experience. This has been the most disappointing shop during my Scotland holiday so far.

I usually always pop in for some Kinder Bars as they are just so addictive and Lidl always have them on offer. I've also noticed that they pretty much always have multipack cans of Coke and Irn Bru at ridiculously cheap prices so is perfect if you're a little parched and heading to the park with a big group. Lidl is permanently full with students picking up bits and bobs for the weekly shop but you really can't complain with the bargain prices offered here.
