They have a women's shop and a separate men's shop two doors down, but we were mostly interested in a high quality wool suit for him. As soon as we walked in, we were welcomed by friendly staff and it almost felt like a personal shopping experience. I can't remember the name of the gal who helped us, but she must've gone up and down their stairs 5 times to check for sizes and different cuts for us. She was also incredibly helpful in sizing my partner and making sure he left with an impeccable 3-piece suit. It never felt pushy, just super helpful. HIGHLY recommend! You don't have to get a full suit- they've got great cashmere and coats as well as scarves and other accessories.

I found a very useful thread on Reddit that listed several reputable shops in Edinburgh (our base of operations while in Scotland), including this warning: "Whatever you do, don't go into any of the tat shops." Of course, then I had to ask Google what a "tat shop" was. In the United States, my guess would have been a tattoo parlor, but that didn't make sense. A "tat shop" is a souvenir store. I made some phone calls when we got to Edinburgh. Many stores in the UK are closed on either Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Wednesday, so that narrowed our choices. Other stores had no fair isle jumpers in stock. Still, I was undeterred and kept calling around. After only two or three calls, I reached Dicks Edinburgh and was told that they did have exactly what I was seeking. A few hours later, after we had toured Edinburgh Castle, we hopped into a cab and went straight there. My husband and I were the only customers, and the entire staff (two women and a man) were collectively attentive to us. It took me only a few minutes to decide on the perfect jumper. It was a lovely experience from start to finish. Dicks Edinburgh is clearly a quality clothing store, and I would not hesitate to shop there again.

On entering we were directed upstairs to the suits where a lovely young man asked what The OH wanted out of his suit. Then within five minutes we had a pile of possibilities, which the suit-guy was patient enough to pin and tuck as I cast my critical eye over everything. I liked that both me and the OH got a say (it's his suit, but he brought me for a reason). Then we were directed to another section where a lady took over for all our shirt, shoe and tie needs. It's a good set up and you don't feel under any pressure from any of the staff. The range is huge, it's not all Italian fanciness or Ted Baker but when you're used to 'do you want brown or black' it's such a breath if fresh air to have so much choice. Their range of sizes is excellent (up to a 38 leg in most of the trousers, not sure about chest and shoulders though). The wide range means affordable too. While trying on the sales assistant acted as a tailor, measuring, tucking and pinning. This meant we knew the suit fit and won't be in for any nasty surprises next week when we pick it up after it's free alterations (any subsequent alterations will also be free, for the life of the suit!) Because it's a big place there's a bit of a factory feel to it, but the well-dressed, helpful staff go out of their way to make you comfortable so this wears off quite quickly. It's not high street and it's not bespoke but it's a darn good suit, so I'll be back.

We settled on the second suit my Dad tried, and the best thing is they alter for free! This was the Monday and the guy said we could pick up the altered suit on Saturday. As my Dad doesn't live in Edinburgh I said I would pick it up but it would be two weeks later as I was going on holiday on Saturday. Not a problem, he organised the suit to be ready for the Wednesday. My brothers picked up their suits from another branch of Slaters and they were just as good.

Many clothes were damaged, and the tag did not mention the damaged item. I understand that items are vintage, but it should be disclosed of the condition of the clothing. The v store was very hot and packed with people. I was unable to look at everything because shoppers kept bumping into me or cutting me off unfortunately. The clothes were not very organized either. It was hard to look through them. If they did crowd control and limit the shoppers inside, I may have had a better experience. This has been the most disappointing shop during my Scotland holiday so far.
