It's not the cheapest place to buy things, but for its range of domestic items it's unbeatable. If you need something for your flat or house you are likely to find it here so if you're after a wide range of items and aren't up for visiting hundreds of shops this place will save you a lot of time and effort. At the start of each new lease I've found myself in here buying a few items and although you can just about beat the prices by traipsing all over town to every specialist spot it is great value for money. In the end you'll learn to come here every time you need something simply because it will save you a lot of time.

When I first moved to here, Edinburgh Bargain Stores was one of those places I was told to visit to get all of my stuff . and when you read that, emphisis the word 'AAALL', and you get how people recommended the Bargain Stores. This place has a mind boggling amount of stuff hidden in it, like some sort of Alladins cave of useful bits and bobs. Theres stationary, cushions, bed linen, glasses, toys, DIY stuff, tools, toiletries, stuff for cleaning your house and an unlimited list of other things that will include other things that you wont have even thought of. However, this place isnt really a bargain - in fact, I think its rather expensive, and truthfully, while there is admittedly a large amount of useful stuff, there is also a lot of junk and it is always a bit poor quality. Great for what you want, but always a bit expensive and there is a lot of crap to go through before you find what you need.

This place is in a really handy location for a lot of students as it's right opposite the Uni campus and is nestled between a whole lot of other busy shops like Tesco on Nicholson Street. It's also massive and cheap (sort of). In my flat if we ever need new light bulbs, glasses, crockery or even just a notepad, Bargain Stores is where we head to. The stationary is cheap enough and there's plenty of it, and they also have just about any household item you could think of. This is great when you need a new bin or you need a plunger to unblock the sink. The problem with Bargain Stores, however, is that there's a lot of unneccesary stuff which just takes up space. For example, it sells ornaments. When people want to buy ornamnets they don't rush to Bargain Stores to furnish their mantelpieces with tat, they go to an antique shop or the like. Yet, the fact that they always have this stuff stocked must mean that someone's buying it, which is worrying in itself. Nevertheless, Bargain Stores is handy and moderately priced for the everyday things which we can't be without.

Another baffling, huge monster of a pound store to be found in this area of Edinburgh…read more It sells everything. I could expand on everything that it sells, but we would be here for a while. I might invent an updated version of the Only Fools and Horses song that plays during the end credits, since they list off their many bargain wares. For a wide range of products, this place isn't bad. Aside from selling the tourist tat that most bargain stores in Edinburgh display, they've got some imitation brands, garden equipment and cheap as chips electrics, just to give you an idea of the broad spectrum. I wouldn't trust any electrics from a pound shop, but for things like earphones you can be pleasantly surprised for a short lived period of time. Needs must in these purse pinching days of the recession, but it's a bit too much of a tacky overload for me. I'm sure if you rake through this place with a fine toothed comb you'll find something of use, but mostly it's a bit much! But since they bear the Only Fools ethos of bargain selling, it's a guarantee you'll find "cut prices at a stroke!"

I could have spent hours in here browsing at all the wares, finding bizarre reasons why I would ever need half of the stuff in here. I was tempted by the colourful clay as it's been so long that I've made any clay people but decided it wasn't a very wise purchase. This place does seem to have everything but to be honest, none of it seems all that useful but if you're looking for a tiny screwdriver, a crazy soap dish or a garden gnome you will be able to take your pick in here.

You do get a decent amount of good deals from here especially on regular household items that you use on a regular basis making it ideal for those who are attempting to bring down the cost of their weekly shop without sacrificing anything from that shop. The shop itself is well stocked though offer little beyond items that are regularly bought, but as far as I'm concerned this goes in its favour rather than against it as it does enable it to be able to focus more on that one area helping it be able to offer great value in that area. All round a very good shop and it is worth considering as a place to pick up some of your weekly shopping.

Inside, the shelves are well stocked with all items being around £1 - there were many that I saw for £1.29 for example. It's the sort of things that I'd expect to see in a pound shop, together with a reasonable range of toiletries and household cleaning items. This is not the limit of this shop though. There is a whole part of the shop dedicated to Polish goods; something that will be valued by Edinburgh's large Polish population. Places selling Polish goods are scattered across the city, and leads to me to wonder about experimenting with some Polish cuisine some time. All told, this is a great bargain shop. It's always worth checking out their stock, as they sometimes can be cheaper than the supermarkets for some items.

It is basically an emporium of cheap tat (I mean that in the nicest possible way) on Lothian Road: the shop equivalent of that drawer full of crap in your house. There are cooking utensils, clothes, bathroom things, DIY stuff, stationary, cards, classy (*ahem*) ornaments.... the list goes on forever. I have actually done Christmas shopping in here before, and I think I got away with it! It does this job of selling those items you can't get elsewhere fairly well and the prices are reasonable and don't take advantage of the fact that these are hard to find items. Not only this, but the staff are friendly and will advice you where to buy an item if they don't have it. If you want it and it can't be found in the usual places or here it probably can't be found and when hunting for specific items this is always a good place to start. Just try to avoid buying all the stuff you know you don't need.

Especially if you want to see the volcanic plug under the castle. The best views of it are from here. It's also where you can make your way up the Vennel Steps to see the old defensive walls of the city. There are even two or three different ways that you can get to the castle from here. The Granny Green Steps are located on the west side of the square. It will take you up to Johnston Terrace where you can take another set of stairs called Castle Wynd North up to the castle. The second option is to take the Castle Wynd South path in the middle of the square which will lead into the Patrick Geddes Steps and directly to the North Steps. Another way is to walk up West Bow from the square to Victoria Street (also in Grassmarket). Take the stairway up to Victoria Terrace and then make your way up to the steps at Castle Wynd North or to the Royal Mile. You'll get a different perspective of the Grassmarket area and the castle from all angles. We visited it daily. We even passed through it on our way to Greyfriars Kirkyard via Candlemaker Row. The National Museum of Scotland is also easily accessible from here. The square in Grassmarket is the perfect meet up location. There's a lot of dark history here as well. It was one of the public execution sites that included the unsuccessful one of "Half-Hangit Maggie Dickson" in 1724. There's a bar at the square named after her. You'll also see a memorial written on the stones of the square for the last person (James Andrews) to be hanged at the gallows there on 4 February 1784. All creepiness aside, it's a very lively and active place that you'll pass through at some point. I mean, how could you not?
