I've been inspired to write my first Yelp review in years because of the incomparable Tinelle at Bare. She came HIGHLY recommended to me by a friend, and it was time that I pay that gift forward. Tinelle is, said so simply but meant so fully, the best of the best. She's not only mastered her craft but also engenders the most calming, gentle, and relaxed energy that makes the entire experience (one I used to absolutely avoid), dare I say, enjoyable. Have been to both locations several times, as they are one of the only options for sugaring in Vancouver. Staff are very friendly and accommodating, and it's always easy to get an appointment. Unfortunately, they don't book enough time for sugaring appointments, so the technicians seem rushed. They go for too big of patches, even in the extra ouchy zones. More than one technician has gotten sugaring stuck to my skin (I understand it's a tricky and delicate balance to keep that stuff the right softness/temperature, but if your patches are small then it's not a big deal). Instead of grabbing a strip to remove the too-soft goo discretely and quickly, they just keep yanking, leaving big patches of bruised/bloody follicles afterwards. It's obviously going to sting a bit when you rip intimate hairs out by the root, but I know from experience that it doesn't have to be this rough and painful. Most other places I've been sugared left my skin freshly exfoliated, soft, and clear (not even the typical rosy bumps that go with waxing). I leave Bare red and irritated and end up with ingrowns and inflammation in the days to follow. They are quick to send you on your way, without double checking or giving you a chance to double check. I have been disappointed by the amount of hair left behind after every visit. I shouldn't have to hunch over and pluck myself after paying a professional to take care of it. The amount of hair left behind after my last visit was ridiculous. The space is not well maintained and is pretty messy overall. The rooms are literally splattered with sugar globs (including my clothing when I've gone to leave! Slow down and you won't fling as much!). There is random debris in the light fixtures, garbages are often overflowing, work carts are sloppy, and older sticky, hairy patches grab your socks when you walk across the room. The staff seems pretty great, and I'm sure they'd do a fabulous job if they were given a reasonable amount of time and didn't have to cut so many corners. read more

Tinelle D. is a friggin wax magician. I've been going to her for more than a decade. She makes one feel completely comfortable and at ease. She is incredibly fast, yet thorough, and makes sure you're happy with the job. The process is practically painless (try the sugaring!) Highly recommend going to her!! Made a booking online with my usually gal -Bali- only to find out 2 days before my appointment that she was no longer going to be there. She had changed her schedule one week after I booked and no one at the wax bar even thought to let me know. The customer service is not very good, the last girl I went to see Audrey (when Bali wasn't available) made me feel guilty for not using sugar wax as I wanted regular wax, and then proceeded to be less than gentle because I hadn't gone with her recommendation. For a 10-minute brow wax, I had to fill out a ridiculous waiver as if I was getting surgery, I waited another 10 minutes for my esthetician and then had a terrible brow final result. My brows were uneven, the edges weren't clean, and she spent more time plucking than waxing, which I could have done myself (I wish I had). I went here when sugarbox couldn't take me in last minute, wow was i pleasantly surprised or what?!! Never thought I would stray from there, but I think I have found my new waxing spot! (Or at least when they can't get me in) Bare was so cute, super clean and my waxer (Samantha) was awesome! She was so quick and efficient. We just gabbed about life and before you know it my wax was all done! My only small complaint which I know has nothing to do with the place is that it was hard to find parking because of all the darn construction going on around there. I also wanted to mention its strange that yelp has filtered like 17 of their 5 star reviews( some of which are from highly trusted yelpers) and kept the negative reviews of people that have zero reviews. I don't know about the location on west 4th but my experience here was absolutely terrible. I have given it one star strictly for the lovely receptionist who was there to greet me. I booked to have a full leg wax and Brazilian. I was hesitant immediately walking into the room as the garbage bin was overflowing with trash and used wax strips (ew). I decided to look past this and continue on, and then I saw the trolley with her equipment on it. There were used materials on the trey and it was messy. It just looked so dirty. Lastly, the technician. I've had a few waxes in my past and I work in the hospital. Point of the story is I'm not very shy. She made the appointment so awkward. I won't say she was mean but she answered my questions so abruptly and was almost annoyed? She went so fast, spots were missed. I got the feeling I was a major inconvenience (maybe they need more staff - I don't know). I wanted out of there so bad I said nothing about the missed spots and just fled. Worst part was I saw her right away in the Be Fresh next door buying lunch in the same line with me - not even a nod of acknowledgement. No thanks, never again. read more

It's hard to find a great wax place. It really is...but once you do - it's a relationship worth nurturing for years and years. I had the most amazing esthetician in Toronto. Not only was she a bargain, but she was a perfectionist. Bare didn't compare, but that's because phenomenal is hard to come by. But Bare is the best in Vancouver. Seriously. The placed came highly recommended so I finally decided to put discomfort aside and book an appointment with Sati. Bare is cute clean space in Kits and their brazilians are the cheapest in the city. First one is $24, and if you go back within 5 weeks it's $5 cheaper than their regular price. Mind you, even at regular price their waxes are worth every penny - at least here in Vancouver. Sati was efficient and she's a consummate professional - which means you get over the awkwardness of having a stranger in your personal space quickly. They don't use hard wax (it's an option but it's at a premium price) but they're hygienic. My wax wasn't the perfection I have become accustomed to, but it was perfect enough that I have officially found my new go-to gal. Yay for word of mouth love. read more

First time coming here. I called this morning to book an appointment for 1:00 pm. The receptionist was super friendly and said she could have me in at 1:10 pm. I arrived a bit early (12:55 pm), and was politely greeted by a woman named Sati. She was super personable. I told her my name, I filled out my release form and by 1 pm she saw me in! Was so nice that I didn't have to wait the extra 10 minutes even though I was early. :) I was SO impressed by how quickly she did my bikini wax! She did everything in 5 minutes, was very thorough and very helpful by suggesting that next time I come in, I should get a Brazilian wax with the numbing lotion, as she knows it can be quite painful for some. Not only did she get it done quickly but I was very impressed with how cheap it all was. Needless to say, I am now a regular. :) read more

I booked an appointment for a Brazilian, I normally go to my usual wax bar in yaletown but they were fully booked. I was pleased they were able to accommodate an early appointment on short notice. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I contemplated writing this review but figured some good may come of it. I was hoping for a more thorough wax but I noticed a few spots were missed in certain crevices and are now fuzzy. My mom has been in the Aesthetics industry for 26 years and is the Owner and Operator of a successful Aesthetics Day Spa in Victoria. She's a stickler for perfection and customer service always comes with a bit of heart. Sometimes a lot. Waxing isn't a walk in the park. And pain is real. When it comes to beautification treatments and feeling good about yourself, I know a few things. MY CREDS for the validity of this review: My sibling and I were raised by an entrepreneur. In business for herself working full time and extra while raising two humans. Work ethic: Filipina. Love everyday even if you work all day and put huge heart into everything you do. MY POINT growing up in and around this industry has made me (also) a stickler for perfection. I'm very very picky about who touches my body and especially who touches my brows. Getting your brows done wrong is like wearing a dirty shirt around everyday for a week. You don't feel so great. Getting your brows done right can make a huge difference in a person's self confidence, smile, and general disposition. Because sometimes you spill coffee all down the front of your shirt, and then you're like "£^%^*€" So you go to the mirror to assess the damage and you're like "¥#*^££ my shirt is £^%^*€" but then you don't care cuz your like "damn Sati did a great job shaping my brows." And then you go about the rest of your day feeling great because your eyebrow game is 100. It's Vancouver, there are a plethora of establishments that provide aesthetics services, it has been a hilarious and sometimes not-so-funny exercise in patience amongst other emotions to find a righteous place to trust my skin and face to. I've lived here in Vancouver since 2004, I have been to a lot of salons and places that offer threading, cheap places, expensive places, and spas. I will continue to go to Bare Wax Bar because there is value in the service their staff provides. I get the same good feeling whenever I arrive, am there, and then leave. I trust their staff because they are super fast, they accommodate appointment changes, they offer professional and sanitary services, but they also care. It matters when you care about your clients. I feel important when I walk in the door. I feel empowered when I leave. I recommend Bare Wax Bar and continue to attend for beautification treatments. read more

I had the pleasure of meeting Shannon for my wax service today, she was very nice and humble and most important she made me feel very comfortable. I was getting an uncomfortable place waxed which I was nervous about and almost omitted to be honest! When it comes to a Brazilian, I want to spend as little time on it as possible. Bare Wax is quick, efficient, often able to accommodate last minute appointments and really inexpensive compared to most waxing salons in the area. The staff is also very friendly and I like the frequent customer points system through Belly. My only quibble is that the rooms are more like dividers. The walls don't touch the ceiling so you can hear conversations people are having. Stick to small talk and you'll be fine ;) Definitely my go-to waxing place in Vancouver! read more

So I moved to Vancouver and then faced that awkward situation of where to keep my lady bits from resembling the BC wilderness. I had only ever been sugared down there and never waxed. However, finding a sugaring place proved a tricky task. It got to the point I was running out of time for figuring out where to go. I finally settled on giving Bare Wax Bar a try and I am so glad that I did. The front desk staff is the only thing that stopped me from adding that 5th star. Its not that they were poor, but just didn't have that welcoming customer service feel. I've gone twice now and both ladies I had were super quick and efficient. Very efficient...to the point my eyes grew a little wide thinking my previous sugarist hadn't told me there was a hair situation there haha I cannot believe how painless these girls have gotten their technique down to. So fast, minimal pain and very thorough. I have had no ingrowns either. Besides the actual techniques of the ladies in my experience they had great personalities that kept things casual and conversational. The first time I went as mentioned my situation down there had gotten a little situated...I'm not one to let things get so far gone so I was a little embarrassed. Well my lady put me completely at ease and thought nothing of it. (or if she did handled it very well.) This is def going to be my go to place now that I've moved to Vancouver. I've gone to bare twice now... The first time was wonderful. The girl was friendly, quick and the overall experience, great! This time however, not so much. Although the girl was lovely her waxing skills were amateur. The appointment was late, the wax was more painful than uses and she wasn't as skilled as I would've liked. I went in for a simple bikini sugaring and was given a French bikini, which is NOT what I asked for or wanted. Now it looks like I have a douchey soul patch for pubic hair. In addition to that the lines were not clean, I had stray hairs, and it was one of the most painful hair removal experiences I've ever had. I have been looking for a good wax salon since I moved to Vancouver a year ago. I drove by Bare Wax and jotted down their number. They do a great job! I've been to places that charge $80 for a wax and they don't even do as wel as Bare does. Quick, friendly, and effienct service! Everything is clean and orderly and both my appointments have been on time. Bare Wax is unique in that they realize that paying $80 for a wax is crazy and so they charge less and do an amazing level of work. Been to Bare a handful of times now. Yes I agree that the actual waxing part is good, but as for making a client conformable and providing some pain relief during the procedure?? That's where they lack a bit of skill. Some may not care about how comfortable they are and just want to get the job done and that's just fine. But as an esthetician working in the field for 10 years I believe that a customer's comfort is just as important as doing a thorough job. Just to clarify, it was one esthetician in particular I'm referring to. I'd rather not call this person out, but I hope that management can pass this along to all the staff and that this individual will learn to make her customers more comfortable. I've gone to Bare Wax Bare for Brazilians 4 or 5 times now and I've noticed that the cleanliness has gone downhill. I was there at 11am today and there was already hair all over the bed. Plus, despite giving my name when I checked in, the esthetician had no idea who I was, re-booked my next appointment under a different name, then minutes after leaving, called to say I had missed my appointment (calling me by yet another name). The first time Brazilian wax in my whole life, I choose Bare and it turned out to be Awesome :)!! I went there with my other2 colleagues and we booked a rush same day appointment so that we can do it altogether. Luckily they took us on 5:30pm. The lady who waxed me was real sweet. She keepEd talking to me and try to relax me. She was so professional that I honestly didnt feel bad at all. Ofcoz it was painful but it was so mild that I don't feel uncomfortable at all!! At the end of the wax, she went closly to my private part and tweezed the leftover hairs. How can I not satisfy with such professional service???? I believe they are using good quality wax as my private part didn't have a strong reaction after waxed. I will definitely go back for Brazilian wax ;) read more

I'm someone who goes for regular waxes and I've been doing so for the past 4 years so you can imagine how experienced I am with the process. I usually go to a specialty wax bar but I was told by a peer to check out Bare. When I got there I was put into a room that was not enclosed (walls were not connected to the ceiling) so I could hear everything in the room next to me and I'm sure they could hear me as well. I like to have my privacy as one should when they are in their undergarments. The actual waxing was SO PAINFUL! So much more painful than any experience I have ever had- including my very first wax. The wax was far too hot (I told the waxer and she just said it was normal). The waxer was very aggressive with applying wax and wiping excess off. There was wax put in places where wax should NEVER go! The following days I had many tiny bruise like spots on the waxed area which occurs when the wax strip is pulled off at the wrong angle and I was also swollen and sore for 4 days post appointment. I had a ton of little white bumps and about 8 ingrown hairs which is the most I've ever had at one time-even after exfoliating and performing proper aftercare. I talked to one of my friends who had also gone around the same time as me and she had a similar experience. The $4 price difference from my usual wax bar is so not worth all of this pain. I will NEVER go back to get a wax from here again and will not recommend to friends. read more

I've been to Bare Wax Bar on West 4th Avenue twice for a manicure and pedicure. The first time was a very nice experience, the esthetician was skillful, efficient and very friendly. I was very pleased with the result and the manicure lasted two weeks. The second time was a completely different experience. I had to wait. While the esthetician was friendly and attentive, the manicure itself was mediocre: polish over the cuticles, rough edges on the nails. Too bad. But my real concern is the lack of cleanliness. While I was told that the nail file and buffer are used only once, I'm not so sure that the other instruments (nipper, clippers, cuticle pusher) are properly cleaned and sterilized. The salon itself seems rather soiled and could use a fresh-up, a thorough cleaning and painting. I won't return. read more

I tried Bare Wax once, and will never again! Booked for bikini wax,I had gone longer than the normal 6-8 weeks in between waxes (it was winter) but she felt the need to comment about my hair. Which made me feel extremely uncomfortable and even more vulnerable. She then added at the end my eyebrows don't suit my face shape, and I should get those done before I leave. Feeling uncomfortable I agreed. She trimmed my right eyebrow to flat angle across and barely touched the left. Worst eyebrow wax! i now have bangs to cover up her mess up. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone! My first experience was ok, with the waxer berating me and insisting I must have shaved since my last wax, since my hair was so thick. My second experience, last week, was horrible. I went in for a brazilian after only having had bikini waxes for the last bit (at a different salon), and it was horrible. I have thick hair and when the waxer came to the sections with thicker hair, she didn't change her technique. She attempted to rip it all off in a long strip, without applying pressure or tension to my skin. After having to try to re-rip the wax strip twice, she continued on with that method, instead of switching to smaller strips of wax at a time. Needless to say, I walked out of there VERY sore, and the next day the skin scabbed over and remained scabbed over, red and irritated for the rest of the week. A good waxer knows how to deal with thick and difficult hair, and this place did not. Two strikes and a bruised pubis and I am OUT. Would not recommend to anyone, even if you are in a pinch. read more

Went here for the second time a few days ago and was waxed by Sashalina. She's hilarious and very thorough! She made an uncomfortable, embarrassing and painful experience enjoyable! I had a different waxer my first time and she was not that impressive. The space is bright and clean and prices are certainly reasonable. They have been able to accommodate me last minute on both occasions. I would recommend visiting Sashalina at Bare for sure. read more

Went here today for a brazilian, the first time you go it's a low price of $25 for the wax and if you come in again within 5 weeks you pay less then the normal price. Place is clean, very nice workers there. The waxing was painless and quick. I recommend coming here for your waxs and ask for Naomi she works wonders. read more

When I made my appointment I asked for a full leg/underarm/bikini wax. I specifically asked to have hard wax (like the putty stuff) used for my bikini and underarm. First off, when I walked in, there was no one at reception. I was greeted with a hello from another room and asked to wait. My appointment started 15 minutes late. The bed was absolutely disgusting with someone else's hair on it. Thank goodness for the paper sheet. The aesthetician had no idea I had requested hard wax for the more sensitive areas. I had to keep reminding her. Bikini was first and it was a nightmare. The place was so hot, I was sweating so the wax wasn't hardening properly. It had to literally be ripped off of my inner leg tiny piece by piece - it was brutal... And I have a high threshold for pain! Eventually I asked them to use the regular wax to remove the hard wax and move on. Legs were fine. Then I was dismissed but I had to remind them that I still needed my underarms waxed. Again they forgot to use the hard wax and unfortunately since I just wanted to get out of there ASAP, I forgot to remind them. When i got home, the skin on my underarms had been peeled and I was bruised for two days. They simply tore the hair from my underarms. Hair started growing within days of the wax and I had to resort to shaving (I was on vacation). This place is highly disorganized, unclean, and their customer care is quite unfortunate. The people working here are more interested in gossiping with one another than running a business properly. I guess you get what you pay for. I will never go there again. read more
