For all the decades I've lived in NYC, it took me til yesterday to visit for a haircut. My former…read morestylist retired so was looking around. A friend recommended this place but I was skeptical because I didn't think Astor Hair stylists were familiar with long hair. But wow was I mistaken! I met Regina, a beautiful kind and super experienced and unbelievably talented stylist. She asked me how short I wanted to go, what my objectives were (endure the summer heat) and maintain the line my former stylist had going on. Here's the result. Can I say I love it- yes! But my personal journey has been to maintain the full thickness of my hair, which is unrealistic when I compare with my goals to reduce the impact of heat on my neck and head. It will take some time to get used to managing a much smaller amount of hair. But my friends love it, my spouse loves it, and most importantly I have been able to replicate the same style on my own. 3X less expensive than my former stylist with better results. That's also something i love. Obviously, the vibe in this iconic place is fantastic. Gave me CBGB and late 70-early 80's nostalgia for my beloved NY. I only wish I'd have known they could cut long hair as well as Regina can.

I've been going to Suzy for about 1 1/2-2 years for cuts. I decided to get color. My hair is a…read moreVERY light, natural blonde. What she did came out 3-4 shades darker, with an orange tint, looking like a dollar store Barbie doll, cheap- and fake-looking. She ended up only charging me $60-65 (I can't remember exactly) for full color. Would have been a huge red flag, but she only gave me this price AFTER the service. (insert Bombastic side eye) Now, she showed me her swatch book, and the color she thought would look good. I told her that it was too dark (blonde, but more yellow-y, not pale and light), darker than what I wanted. She told me it was just "the lighting" in the shop, it would be perfect, what I wanted. I chose to go along with her. MISTAKE! I also told her I wanted to GROW out my layers and grow my hair, so just to give it a trim and clean up the cut. (For refernece, It was a few inches below my neck with some very soft layers, nothing drastic.) She chopped a about 3.5- 4" off, to the point it came to slightly above my shoulders. So, more like just cutting, instead of growing the layers out. My formerly beautiful hair was cut too short (bob), a brassy yellow, faintly orange/strawberry (!!!!) fake looking limp layer of ugly on my scalp. I know that I can be sensitive to change, so all the time she was telling me how nice it looked and how sexy I now looked (?!?!), I was just trying not to cry. I know I'm sensitive to change, and I was praying that she had been right about the light in the shop distorting the way the color looked, so I bit my tongue and decided to give it a while for me (and hopefully, the color) to adjust and not immediately go 'hairzilla'. And, to be fair, up until this point I had been happy with Suzy's services so far. Of course, the shop lighting had nothing to do with it. It was absolutely not what I had asked for, and it was horrid. I waited a little while (a week?), hoping the color would fade. It did, but only very slightly. Every time I had to see myself in the mirror to do makeup, I cried. I finally called her and asked her what, exactly, she used, as I had called some other stylists to fix whatever it was she had done. Here's where I know SHE def knew, she messed up. At first, she told me she didn't know what products/shades she had used. I kept pressing. She then told me she would have to look. I said I would wait. She finally told me she used four seperate colors she mixed together. They were all Clairol brand, including one I looked up that was MEDIUM BLONDE (to put on top of fair, almost white blonde hair to NOT make it a darker shade? Not sure how the process works, but really? Also, not sure about the other three shades) Suzy had asked my about my color before, and seemed visibly skeptical about the answers I gave her (which were all true, btw). I think it's very possible she decided I wasn't being honest with her and treated my hair based on what she thought and not on what I told her and what I wanted. I told her the color was not at all what I had asked for or wanted, it was cheap and fake looking (compared to what I had walked in with, and yes, some of my friends/work associates had noticed and commented on this, aka: OMG! What did you do to your hair?). At first she wanted me to come in so she could 'fix' it. I told her no thank you, I would be going elsewhere. She then atually got angry telling me I should actually be thanking her because she did me a FAVOR! Speechless... This is where I started to feel some kind of way about the situation. Had I gotten something like, "Gee, I'm sorry, I really thought this was what you had asked for," or "Yeah, that didn't come out the way I thought it would, I made a mistake,", etc., I would prob feel differently. But... chatising ME? Not cool.

I had a shocking experience here considering the reputation. The owner left me with an uneven…read morehaircut and told me to "have a nice life". I'm not clear anymore if they're going to refund me or not. I was left with a haircut that does not reflect what I asked for and was not resolved after multiple attempts. The only solution ultimately offered was to cut it even shorter into a pixie, which I had been clear from the beginning I did not want. When I pushed back on that and requested compensation for the $105.45 I've already spent on hair products/tools to fix the haircut errors, I was asked to reconsider leaving a negative review and was offered compensation "for the next cut", which sounded to me like a quid pro quo. After declining, the final responses I received from the owner included "anything we seem to do or say you turn around to be something horrible so I am done talking" which speaks for itself in terms of professionalism. I came in with clear references for a micro bob/longer bixie with a piecey, directional finish. The initial result was a pixie in the back disconnected from a micro-bob shape in the front. My bangs were barely trimmed but left uneven, and the overall shape did not reflect the references provided. The cut was then "corrected" by the owner. She significantly improved the back by removing weight and creating the appearance of more length without cutting it shorter. However, the front was taken much shorter in the process. My bangs went from hanging over my eyes to sitting roughly an inch off my forehead, and the overall balance of the cut was not resolved. The sideburns also remained visibly uneven in length even after this second pass. These problems are structural, not styling-related: * the sideburns are visibly uneven in length (even after being addressed, and these areas do not change with parting or styling) * excess weight through the crown creates a dense, rounded "helmet" shape * the transition between the very short back and longer front lacks cohesion * the fringe remains blunt rather than broken up and textured I raised these concerns during the appointment, and multiple stylists, including the owner, were involved. I asked another more trusted stylist for directions on how to fix it and sent the owner this explicit step by step guide. Still, you can see the result. I was told by a 3rd stylist brought in that the result was a dead-on match my reference, which is difficult to reconcile with the visible inconsistencies. The cut was styled in a way that temporarily masked these issues, and the pace of the appointment made it difficult to fully assess what was happening. I felt rushed to wrap up despite actively pointing out uneven areas. After following up, I was issued a refund, which I appreciate. However, I was also told the cut was correct and simply intended to be worn differently, which does not align with what is visibly present. This has also had a real impact beyond the haircut itself. I now have my sister's wedding this summer and may need to rely on temporary solutions like wigs just to make this feel wearable while it grows out. I will be including photos, both haircuts, my before and after plus the inspo with this review so others can judge the result for themselves. If you're looking for a more classic or controlled short cut, this salon may be a fit. But if you want a precise micro bob or similarly structured short shape, I would proceed with caution and make sure your stylist is aligned on execution, not just general aesthetic.
