After many years with one highly skilled, reliable but VERY pricey Manhattan stylist, I finally was fed up with spending so much for a haircut. A friend recommended this place, I took the leap and happy to say I'm so impressed with my experience: I got a great haircut for a fraction of the price I normally spend. The person who cut my hair was surprisingly confident but also careful and took the time to make sure I was more than satisfied. A short haircut appears deceptively simple but it's actually a challenge to get it just right. It was easy to book an appointment, the receptionist was warm and friendly, and honestly, it was a bonus to be able to listen in while students consulted the instructor with various questions. It's a hit or miss since it's students that are doing the service under the supervision of trained instructors. Be prepared to spend more than you would for a service at a regular salon. I've been visiting Aveda salon for about 10 years now and today was my final visit. Prices have increased to the point that it is no longer a deal and the service is absolutely atrocious, both from supervisors and students. Today i went in for a color touch-up, something I had done about 6 times before. A dumpy, stocky, barrel of a woman in red lipstick started screaming me out for not know color codes. And not having a photograph of what was done in the past. What a nsaty attitude and a scream down in the middle of the salon. Reprimanding me about not knowing these are students and I SHOULD KNOW WHAT TO ASK FOR. Excuse me? I am paying $72 dollars for a service. Even if its student, I expect a bare minimum of service for my money. You are not doing clients a favor. Clients are doing you a favor to sit there for 5 hours so your students can make an absolute mess of their hair and then pay $72. Onto the students. The quality of students they have have zero competence. Again a bare minimum is expected when you charge $72. The students are so incompetent that they have no busienss even being students in any area. The school is doing a very poor job recruiting students. Most of the times you leave the insititute worse than you came in. The students dont give a rat's tail what they do. They are too much in a rush to sit and play with their iphones Lastly, they downright destroy your hair. During my blowdry she yanked so much of the hair out. I came out with a splitting headache. And after all this more of a surprise: A service that I expected to pay 50$ for came up to $62 plus 10$ tip. I could' ve gone to a professionals salon for this price. What a horrible experience. I have a lot of experience having my level 1 hair colored at professional salons and at a hair school. My experience at Aveda was unfortunately very disappointing. I would summarize it as their overconfidently wanting to sell you on their ability to do something they can't necessarily do, then gaslighting you after the fact. The instructors do not have the same knowledge and experience that other professionals do when it comes to color services (or even the instincts that their students have), yet force the students to follow their lead, leading to poor results. I came in asking to be lifted to a level 10. During my consult I was told they "do this all the time." The instructor also refused to use anything higher than 20 volume developer. The end result was a blond that was totally uneven. Then I was told multiple times this was because of "previous color." GIRL, there IS NO previous color. My hair has been growing out for literally years and I have had multiple hair cuts, so it is physically impossible for there to be any residue on the ends. You yourself called my hair "virgin" earlier, so why make excuses for your inadequacy now? Then I was told "how beautiful" the brassy yellow/orange looked. Even after multiple rounds of toning my hair is two different shades of blonde that does not look good. I know that at a professional salon my hair would have lifted evenly because at every professional salon I have ever been to, it has. In fact, even at the Paul Mitchell school, I got an even lift. I regret trying to save money because if I want to repair this, I'll end up spending the money I tried to save. I won't be going back. read more

Got a haircut here. It was not bad for the price as it was cut by a student. The poor guy next to me was there before I sat down and was still there when I got up, so I'm think g his haircut was at least 2 hours. There was a lot of discussion with the instructions. Had a great, first time experience at Aveda. Stephanie A did my hair and she was AMAZING! She made sure to talk me through what she was thinking for my color and curls and always spoke to the teachers about her strategies, which they seemed pleased with. Even when she was rinsing or brushing my hair, Stephanie always asked if her technique was okay and if she could anything to make me feel more comfortable. I've never been to a beauty school to have my hair done and definitely can't vouch for anyone else, but Stephanie did a great job of both listening to my wants and getting beautiful results. Looking for a place to get a blowout? And no, boys, I mean a hair blow-dry--get your minds out of the gutter! AVEDA Institute is a great spot. It's a training school, so you'll have students doing your hair, and while they're working toward their certification, they're not compensated beyond tips--so remember to tip! They offer hairstyling, color treatments, and even facials, which are fantastic. Just be mindful of which level student you book with--since they're still learning, it can take a bit longer, and it might not be perfect, but it's great for simple services like blowouts (aka blow-drys). The students are super sweet, eager to please, and honestly do a great job. For a blow-dry, I paid around $25-30 with a tip, which is such a steal compared to what you'd normally pay in NYC. I've also had facials done there and they were wonderful--just ask for more experienced students when booking if you're nervous about that. I have been going to Aveda for over 10 years now and the quality of service has definitely changed during the last 3 years. The supervision of the students is not what it used to be either. I know that they are learning and it will take 3 hours for a visit and that more often than not I get soaked at the sink ( no problem with that stuff), but I lost so much hair this last visit after the student used two full bowls on my head That I had to write a less than stellar review. When the student said she ran out, she told me she would make a 1/2 bowl more (very heavy handed with color). I have never had so much hair fall out ( multiple full strands of my hair) during a shower wash a few days afterward.very scary. Love the staff that works here and have been loyal, but I cannot let this visit go without writing something about it. Really disappointed. read more

I have been a Aveda Institute guest services customers for about 20 yrs + the spring street location has been my go to for facial and relaxation . The booking process is quick and easy, I have never had a problem with my service the students are very professional and monitored. I have always gone on a Sat morning and out the door by noon depending on my service. I have booked 60 min facial, 90 min facial, packages which includes a back facial. During my last visit I was excited to hear about the upcoming new location in Brooklyn. I definitely recommend. read more

I have been going to this Aveda for many years and I highly recommend it. The staff is well trained and the instructors are extremely helpful. I've had my hair cut and colored. I've also frequently used the spa services and loved the experience every time! Whether it's a facial or a back massage or a full body treatment, I've always left feeling rejuvenated and relaxed. The atmosphere is Zen like. Last but not least is the cost of the services. It can't be beat! The services are professional while the cost is low. I also use many of the hair and skin products. I have been to Aveda several times for haircut and color, and always experience excellent service. Walking through the doors I've been greeted w friendly smiles and a helpful staff. Upstairs to the Salon, greeted once again by a friendly stylist who takes me to their chair. My wants and desires for a new look or style maintenance discussed in detail. I like the benefit of having senior staff instructors at the ready to assist and step-in. I had a great experience at Aveda, I usually just cut and dye my hair myself and my results have just been okay, but I needed to get a hair cut because my ends have been super dull and my hair color ( black ) has been fading. I had Sally as my student hairdresser. She was so sweet and did an amazing job on my hair. The cut I received was exactly like the image I had showed her with lots of layers and length taken off, she also did an amazing job on the hair color too. My hair walking in was super dead and dull and I have to say my hair has never felt healthier. Sally was great to talk to and cut and dyed my hair with so much precision, I will definitely be going back within the next 6 months to get my hair refreshed. For those leaving bad reviews: You are not the highest paying client there, the students are. The students are learning. You sign a waiver acknowledging you are putting your hair at risk for an unlicensed future cosmetologist to perform a service on you. This is something you are consenting too. The service may be bad because there is a low tolerance for people trying to dispute this concept after the fact. So if you do not want to risk a student making a mistake, bite the bullet and go pay a professional. read more

I had gone to an Aveda Institute before and thought it was as a pretty solid experience, but I recently went here twice (once for a cut and the other for color), and they did a very poor job. I'm seriously so low fuss about my hair generally, but even I had to get my hair cut/color fixed because the cut was so uneven and the color was so patchy. I don't blame the students at all -- they are sweet and genuinely want to do a good job -- there's just not enough supervision. The educator was actually quite rude to the student who was working with me. When I called to (politely) ask about getting it fixed, the staff member I spoke to was actually *very* rude to me... If you're a prospective student, I would think about going elsewhere where you will receive better support/a better education. If you're a prospective client thinking about going here to save some money, I don't recommend it. I would have saved myself both time and $160 if I had not gone here. read more

When you actually can get in, it's a great service for a very unbeatable price. However I've come 3 (THREE) times and my student didn't show up so I was there for no reason- they rebooked me and it happened multiple times. Also keep in mind it takes A LONG TIME- I was in for 4.5 hours for a partial highlight. Just that- no cut. Cuts take about 2-3 hours- this is all because they're learning, which is very understandable but just know you're dedicating a very long time to this- you also wait in the lobby for a while before they get you. The plus is I've really enjoyed the times I've gotten my hair done here (2x) and it's turned out so good- it's just kind of a gamble if you'll get in and it takes a long time. read more

The atmosphere was welcoming--low light, soft music, other students & clients speaking quietly. The instructor welcomed me right away, and was nearby to consult on my treatment. My student aesthetician Karen Caba was wonderful--gentle, kind, attentive, positive, and professional. My face is clean & glowing. CUT YOUR BANGS YOURSELF i felt reluctant to write this review seeing as i consented to putting my trust in the hands of a cosmetology student. i didn't have high hopes but i expected the students to be candid about their short comings. i showed my stylist 3 photos and asked for light layers. she said she could definitely do what i asked and that it was her "favorite haircut to do." hearing this i was very relieved. she did fine, though it took 3 hours to do a simple cut. i did not get what i asked for despite her assuring me she could do it. though, im not upset considering she's still learning. the moment of truth was the bangs... see, im very experienced at cutting my own bangs so i didnt ask for much knowing i could fix it later if need be (just long curtain bangs). this time the teacher came over to take over because my stylist did admit this was a weak point for her (which i appreciated). what i did not expect was the TEACHER to cut my bangs a half an inch shorter than i explicitly requested (i said below the brow) and blunt like edna mode without consulting me. she did this using me as a dummy to teach 4 students how to cut bangs. not only this, there's a huge gap in between the two halves of my bangs, i look like dora the explorer or blossom from the powerpuff girls (in the worst way possible). i will be wearing my hair in a headband for the next month while they grow out. i kept my expectations low for the students, unfortunately it was teacher who gave me the worst haircut of my life. i hope that the students get more comfortable admitting where they fall short and that the teachers get better at what they do before spreading bad practices. read more

Best school I've ever attended. Everyone helped me through the course. From everyone from my main teacher Sharie, Dani, Julie, Frank, Natalie, Kevin, etc. Literally all the teachers were there for me! The staff is amazing whenever I needed help they were always there to accommodate and listen to my needs as a student. Even the front desk girls! I appreciate everyone so much. My main teacher especially, Sharie. She had push me and push me because she knew I can do so much better even if I thought my work was perfect. She knew the eyes I had and knew I can even do better. It was tough love. She knew I was a little stubborn (my know it all attitude), but still loved and pushed me for the better. She literally loves all her students and makes sure all of us understands everything she teaches us. I had a lot of personal problems and they were always there to make me feel loved. I was always so happy to go to class. I loved every minute of class because I felt like it was my second home, a safe place, everyone there is like family. I will always be a proud Aveda Alumni. Also, the students here are pretty good for students when getting a hair service done here. The teachers are there to guide them every step of the way. Please understand these are students that are still learning to become a real hair dresser. The prices, you can't go wrong! I recommend getting color especially!! Guys please understand that if you are going to write a bad review about students giving uneven haircuts or color, please understand that these are STUDENTS, not professional. ‍ ** Note This is a very pricey school. If you do pick this school please make sure you are up to date with your payments in order to receive your hrs and test to take the state board. I feel like I had a little confusion with the payments and I end up not being up to date with my payments and then end up having to pay a certain amount in order to receive my diploma. I wasn't the only one that was confused, a lot of other student were too. I had excellent service from the 2 stylists that worked with me. They were professional, courteous, and worked hard. I had an issue with their timing. It was the first time that I had made an appointment 12 weeks in advance. With an appointment, I was told that the stylist that I scheduled with would not be ready to cut my hair for "hours." After 2 hours of waiting I was offered a different stylist (who did a lovely job) because the original person was not available. When you teach individuals how to be stylists, there should be some support in the operations end of a business. Under no circumstances should there be a schedule that cannot be adhered to. When accepting a client, some respect should be paid to the stylists schedule and adjustments made. This is probably the responsibility of the teaching staff, not the kids. read more

COLOR HORROR. I went for a color and the supervisor called JOSEPH (not the student) screwed up entirely. If you see this middle-aged man with black hair combed back with gel, DO NOT LET HIM OVERSEE YOUR PROCESS. The student I got was adorable and understood what I wanted which was very simple: the same hair color as her, a light neutral chestnut with traces of blond. I was hoping to harmonize between the tip of my hair which were darker and the top which was almost blond. I said I would like a color that makes the whole more homogenous - a word that the supervisor did not seem to understand. He made me repeat it twice and still did not listen. When they were about to leave to make the melange I said WORD for WORD: 'Please, nothing dark, black, or red'. And again, pointing to the student 'I want the same color as her'. He just had to look at the student standing there and chose a similar color. Easy, right? Nope. One hour later, I walked out with BLACK HAIR. Joseph's idea of 'harmonization' is basically to slap black over everything. On top of that because my hairs were too long they did not cover all of it and created a 'band' of color. So 'homogenous' in Aveda's jargon means zebra. Simply AWFULL. The student was very nice and I really liked her. It's obvious that she did not have a say in the color choice and she tried her best. She truly felt sorry for me at the end and I wish this did not happen to her. But of course, I was shaking with anger that Jospeh entirely ignored what I asked. I went straight from Aveda salon to my habitual hairdresser - how stupid to try Aveda! I am scheduled for highlights tomorrow to try to lift some of the black which will probably turn red as they used a super dark shade. STAY AWAY IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WALK OUT WITH OUTLANDISH COLORS AND ZEBRA HAIR. read more

No customer service. Walked in to buy products and the person at the front desk failed to both greet me, OR ask if I needed help finding products. He still did not say hello when I arrived at the counter with products, did not ask for my information to log the points in my account or even say thank you or you're welcome as he handed me the products. I go to other Aveda locations and this experience is nothing like the ones I've had before. Pointer to the person working in store: no one else wants to feel the effects of you having a bad day. I've been before with no issues, but on my most recent visit the student completely cut off a HUGE section of my hair.. no way to fix it without shortening all of my hair. So in the end I lost 7.5 inches of hair the other day, when I had just gone in for a trim of just an inch or so. I have a big event coming up so I am very very upset. It is still quite obvious that an error was made, everyone whose seen me has noticed it. The instructor who tried to fix it was very kind and did his best, but I'm still extremely frustrated with this experience. It also took over 3 hours for what was supposed to be just a simple cut! And it was supposed to be her last day, and I was her last client, before graduation! Kinda scary.. It's worth spending the money to go somewhere you know you won't lose all your hair. read more

Students beware. School is a SCAM!!! DO NOT APPLY!!! SAVE YOURSELF THE MONEY AND GO TO ANOTHER SCHOOL. No consistency in teaching, instructors are uneducated, Instructors are tardy and disappear for hours on end leaving students unattended. School is short staffed and half the facility is not operational. Shampoo bowls are constantly backed up and clogged making it impossible to provide services on clients. You get written up for wearing any spec of white, no organization skills, instructors contradict themselves and no one takes responsibility. Its been 4 months into the program and students have not received any student IDs, the supply kit is very limited and you do not get the value you paid which is $2000. The textbook does not match up with the course book and the exams are based off an old textbook that is not being currently used. Students are not provided with their own lockers but rather 1 key that remains with the instructor at all times making it easily accessible to anyone holding the keys to access your stuff. Items do go missing and do not allow camera replay. Personnel is constantly evading their own actions and their word holds no merit. They constantly lie, deceive and do not uphold the terms of the student contract. They discriminate between students, and force students to push Aveda products on clientele. The education at this Institute is way below standard. Aveda institute is not what it used to be. AINY recruiters use the institute's legacy to falsely advertise this school to potential new students. However, AINY fails to deliver on what they advertise. It is a shame that they scam so many students into signing the contract, waste that money and the students' time and the best they can do is tell their students to "make the most of their time here." Please take care of yourself. If you want to become a cosmetologist and enjoy learning your trade, take your desire, time and money somewhere else. I warned you. read more

Worst haircut I have ever received. Don't blame the student working on my hair, but definitely upset with the supervisor overlooking their work. I was going in for a curly cut and they proceeded to cut my hair when it was wet. They cut much more off than I wanted, the final look was NOTHING like the reference photo I brought in and the layers are non existent I just have a bowl cut??? Cried as soon as I left the establishment because it looked so horrible. If you have curly hair, do NOT go here. Would add a picture if I wasn't so embarrassed of the way I look. I got my hair done here yesterday in an effort to be more poor teacher is poor thrifty. I've been there before a few times before and left with really great results. Well during my consult, I asked for my roots to be touched up with the matching highlights I had right now - and fortunately I know some vocabulary to accurately express how I like them. I asked for "level 9, weaved foils, toned with a neutral toner" I didn't think this was such a complicated request. The instructor wouldn't sign off until I provided a photo of what I wanted. Uh. Huh? Is my already existing full head of highlights not enough? Not once did they take out their swatch book to confirm what I wanted. I probably should have gone running for the hills then. Anyways so then the student I got calls up his friend with an annoyed attitude saying he's going to be late to happy hour. Poor baby. So to save himself time presumably, he stops weaving and starts doing slices (which are faster to do but come out chunky skunky looking). Then he sat himself down during processing to watch a movie on his phone with his earbuds in. Not even a word like, "Oh hey, do you mind if I use my phone while you are processing?" If he's training to become a professional, that ain't it. Come to think of it, he lacked a lot of communication skills, such as "Hi! Nice to meet you/be working with you today! My name is..." or "I need to mix up another bowl of bleach, I'll be right back!" or "Oh, let me clip the hair out of your face that's poking you in the eyes while you process for 40 minutes!" or "Can you tilt your head that way?" (instead of just pushing my head to the side). So he didn't really check in on whether you know, the bleach was burning my scalp off? I feel like that's a safety hazard? He totally missed the level 9 mark and to make it seem like he knew what he was doing, told his instructor I wanted to be a level 10. So now I'm BLONDE blonde. The instructor also wasn't checking in because the Trader Joe's next door was offering free ice cream cones that she absolutely needed to leave to be in line for. Then he put the toner on for like less than 15 seconds so he could still make it to happy hour on time. So I'm still yellow. I'm a chunky skunky yellow BLONDE blonde hot mess. It's like, the kind of first time ever dye job you got in the mall in 6th grade that you thought looked so cool but in hindsight and in old photos, you look terrible actually. This is not the "why yes, I spend my fabulous life in the sun by the pool all day [but not really but I wish]" look I was going for. I chalked it up to maybe he was a Level I stylist just starting out, but I was charged for a Level II tier in the end. I loved how the instructor at the end of all of it was like, "Wait, you sliced ALL of the foils?" Well, yeah maybe if you weren't out getting an ice cream cone you would have noticed that this student was not weaving as requested. Or how student got annoyed because I didn't remember the toner ratio that was used when I was here before over a year ago. Sorry that you might actually have to do some work and use some critical thinking skills while you're in school! Every one else yesterday got students who actually cared, I was looking around and everyone else left looking great. Didn't know it was going to be so bad because they past times I've been here were so great. Now I gotta figure out how to gracefully rock zebra stripes. read more
