I met an apprentice Jessie who agreed to do either relaxing or highlights. She set up an appt for a Sat a week away. I decided to go with highlights and lowlights. She did full head, which took around 3 hours, and did an amazing job. She was very helpful in picking out colors and pretty much doing exactly what I wanted. And she was great to talk to as well. I don't think I could have asked for more even if I was paying. However, this was free too! This was an absolutely fantastic experience for me! I hope they'll want to use me again in the future (another apprentice offered to cut my hair soon).

When I wanted to get a fresh new shorter cut I was surprised to see that there aren't any Toni and Guys in NYC -- but I found the Tigi Academy...and found CHRISTOPHER. I already trust the Toni and Guy/Tigi family -- because they are always on top of the latest trends. I did not do the model exchange -- I wanted to pay for an amazing haircut and have an amazing experience. That, I did. Not only is the Academy in a really cool and ritzy party of town - with a great view - But it was clean, modern and every single person there was friendly to me. I am always nervous about paying a good chunk of change for a haircut -- but wellll worth it! The first time around Christopher cut 9 inches off and he made me feel confident and he took control and I loved the result. It was cute right then, and was cute when it grew out. I've already gone back for a second cut. He's my man!

She really listened to what I was looking for and even was willing to make a few adjustments after she had dried my hair. Everything from the washing of my hair, which was very relaxing to the gorgeous blowout she gave me was phenomenal. The only downside of the experience is that it does take a while because there is some waiting for the instructor to give feedback ( i.e. I was in there from 9 AM to 12 PM for my haircut) but Sophia was so easy to talk to the time flew by. I can tell all the students really take their time with haircuts and I would come back again!

Looking for a place to get a blowout? And no, boys, I mean a hair blow-dry--get your minds out of…read morethe gutter! AVEDA Institute is a great spot. It's a training school, so you'll have students doing your hair, and while they're working toward their certification, they're not compensated beyond tips--so remember to tip! They offer hairstyling, color treatments, and even facials, which are fantastic. Just be mindful of which level student you book with--since they're still learning, it can take a bit longer, and it might not be perfect, but it's great for simple services like blowouts (aka blow-drys). The students are super sweet, eager to please, and honestly do a great job. For a blow-dry, I paid around $25-30 with a tip, which is such a steal compared to what you'd normally pay in NYC. I've also had facials done there and they were wonderful--just ask for more experienced students when booking if you're nervous about that. I highly recommend AVEDA for a mini spa day that won't break the bank. It's not a Groupon deal--it's actually half the price of regular salons and spas in the city!

Prices have…read moreincreased to the point that it is no longer a deal and the service is absolutely atrocious, both from supervisors and students. Today i went in for a color touch-up, something I had done about 6 times before. A dumpy, stocky, barrel of a woman in red lipstick started screaming me out for not know color codes. And not having a photograph of what was done in the past. What a nsaty attitude and a scream down in the middle of the salon. Reprimanding me about not knowing these are students and I SHOULD KNOW WHAT TO ASK FOR. Excuse me? I am paying $72 dollars for a service. Even if its student, I expect a bare minimum of service for my money. You are not doing clients a favor. Clients are doing you a favor to sit there for 5 hours so your students can make an absolute mess of their hair and then pay $72. Onto the students. The quality of students they have have zero competence. Again a bare minimum is expected when you charge $72. The students are so incompetent that they have no busienss even being students in any area. The school is doing a very poor job recruiting students. Most of the times you leave the insititute worse than you came in. The students dont give a rat's tail what they do. They are too much in a rush to sit and play with their iphones Lastly, they downright destroy your hair. During my blowdry she yanked so much of the hair out. I came out with a splitting headache. And after all this more of a surprise: A service that I expected to pay 50$ for came up to $62 plus 10$ tip. I could' ve gone to a professionals salon for this price. What a horrible experience. (you should've seen what they did to the client sitting next to me.)

When I called back again today, to ask them to stop calling, the rep smugly said "we're allowed to call you because you asked about our school". It's like they enjoy harassing people. Then after they called me 5 times in one day, I asked to be taken off the call list. The calls have continued for over five months now. At what point does it become unlikely that you're going to change someone's mind about attending their school? After the 3rd call? The 20th call? I had a terrible experience at this school. The first week was great. Then second week was…read morehorrendous. They had us go thru the makeup kits in class. In the kits there was extremely cheap quality makeup. All the students had to sign off that they got all the items. While I was checking I was unaware I was given two of the same foundation makeup shades. After I informed the dean I was told they wouldn't give me the shade I was missing because I signed off that I had everything. This was even after showing her the two foundation makeup in the same shade. During the interview before I attended the school the dean had informed me that with the makeup kit the school had provided with the price of the tuition was a full kit. I would not have to buy anymore makeup for my kit. However the teachers in all the classes had always insisted on upgrading our kit encouraging us to buy more makeup. Because of this I spent hundreds of dollars on extra makeup for the class. I had also expressed that I was not comfortable using the boar brissel brush they provided because I'm anti fur. Eventually I was told instead of being given a cruelty free brush replacement a teacher would give me a list of other brushes I could buy. During this week I've had multiple issues with the staff. They treated my friends who came to model for me very poorly. After having an issue with a fellow student the staff completely took her side. The student had broke several of the school rules. She had tried to get me to break rules too. So I could speed along the makeup application process because we were paired together as models. I had notified the staff. Instead of dealing with the student I was the one who was punished. I tried speaking with the dean about this issue. A few days later she had called me to scold me. She acted like someone from the army. She made me repeat to her that I will not talk to the students or the staff members about me issues. I was very calm while speaking to her. Every time I had asked what to do if a situation happened she yelled to not speak to the students or staff members. After I agreed she said do you understand 3 times. This was because she said students were complaining about me. I found out the "complaints" were concerns of friends from the class. They were concerned because I spoke to them about not getting enough sleep. Due to the fact I was having issues with the hair portion of the class. The president of the school Jenna Fine had also treated me very poorly. She had told me I would not be finishing the class along with my fellow classmates. Instead I'd start individual classes the week after my classmates graduated. Also I wouldn't be learning all the makeup techniques. Instead I had to choose the ones I wanted to learn most. On top of that she only let me have one photoshoot. She also wanted me to bring my friends to model instead of having a model I was promised to have being told when I was interviewed. She told me she wanted me to bring my friends as models because the model they have would be using the photos taken for there professional headshots. The week I attended one of the hair classes the instructor in that class had treated me poorly too. After coming to help me a second time because I had trouble doing his technique he told me he would not help me again. When it was time for my first photoshoot I had requested vegan food since food was provided for the students. I was told to bring my own food. When I had my photoshoot I was completely shocked. When I was interviewed I was told before the photographer took the photos he would inform the students if they had any mistakes to correct with there makeup. He didn't tell me anything but I saw him correcting other students. After the photoshoot I went to speak to Jenna. I explained how I wanted to have more photoshoots. I explained that was the whole reason I attended the school. She declined. During my time at this school I was also completely shocked to see something else this school did. In class they would have the students look at former students work. These were for makeup Dos and Don't. Some students work were in the dos section while others were in the don't. They had the students in the classroom completely pick apart what was bad about the makeup application and what was wrong with it.Furthermore the professional pictures taken were property of the photographer. If any student would decide they want to use one of the pictures for anything such as a magazine they would have to get permission. I would NOT recommend this school to my worst enemy!
