I recently took a leave of absence from the colorist I went to since forever. Her schedule was becoming more and more limited and conflicted with mine. I was familiar with Cutler through a family member with mostly positive reviews. I did some research and decided to take the plunge by having a consultation with my soon to be new colorist. During the consultation, she was friendly and came up with suggestions for what she'd do to my hair so that it would look fresh yet subtle. On the day of my appointment in Soho, all staff were welcoming and approachable. I was asked if I wanted anything to drink and decided on Green tea. My colorist got to work on the highlights and I was pleased with the end result after it was blown out. I'm inclined to return to her; however, as of this writing I recently learned she's moving on to a new salon (and new prices). I've only recently started going to Tonino to cut my hair but I'm so impressed that I had to leave a review! He is truly an artist at cutting hair. I have long hair with long layers, and he really takes his time in ensuring each layer is seamlessly blended and shaped beautifully. He asks the right questions to find out what you really want from your cut and he styles perfectly as well. He is only at the Soho location once a week as his home base is the 58th St location but I don't think they have a Yelp page so I left this review for him here. Her consultations are thorough, she makes sure you're on the same page, and communicates the price before the service so there are never any surprises. My experience was... bizarre. I booked a "full head of highlights" with Cara. I asked for an ashy blonde that would blend in with my natural roots, as I have done my entire life. I always do one session and I use my own pics along with inspo, so I have realistic expectations. I felt uneasy after she didn't seem attentive and spoke down to me during the consultation when I asked a question. I should've listened to my gut. She turned me away from the mirror and slapped in a warm, splotchy, dark color all over and only gave me 6 tiny patchy highlights around my face. On the edge of a panic attack at this point, I spoke up and calmly asked her (very sweet) assistant if I could check in with Cara and just see my hair before the final gloss. She seemed very hesitant about telling Cara, and I soon understood why. Stuck in the shampoo bowl, Cara sat down and verbally accosted me. Away from the main area and teammates, but in front of another customer-very middle school bully behavior. My jaw was on the floor the whole time and I didn't say much. She had a totally aggressive, condescending, unprofessional attitude. She gaslit me, made an ableist comment, suggested I was having paranoia, and was completely incapable of listening to me without making nasty, hostile, defensive remarks. The best thing she could muster was "ugh well, I didn't hear you." Trying to move on, I said, "Okay, I'm sorry. Please, how could I have better addressed my concerns so I know in the future." She didn't have a response to this, which I found very telling. In essence, it was similar to ordering "Coke" and receiving "Pepsi," but when you say, "I'm very sorry, but I think this is Pepsi?" they take you out back and accuse you of telling them how to do their job. I haven't left a salon in tears since I was 12. My nice blonde was completely destroyed. My roots aren't even blended, and there are spots all over. I had made an appointment With Susan, an apprentice at Cutler Soho. She texted me several times and gave me an address of 265 West Broadway. I spent over 45 minutes looking for the address and had about 4 people on the street trying to help me find it. One nice gentleman finally found the address and it was 465 not 265. When I finally got to the salon, they would not take me and were not very nice about what had happened to me. I tried to find the correspondence on Gmail that went back and forth between Susan and me and apparently she had deleted all messages so I had no proof that she had given me the wrong address. Dishonest about prices. I have been going there for years. The hairdresser I go to has been telling me to do Keratin along with a cut. I was quoted on the phone $200-300 for Keratin [the price is not on the website]. It was just to get rid of frizz on curly hair so I thought that made sense. They said there would be a consultation for the Keratin along with the cut. When I got there, we had a consultation and started, nothing about price was ever discussed or mentioned throughout the process. We agreed to not do the cut this time and to wait for my hair to be curly again to cut it. When I went to pay it was $474. I tipped $80. I assumed it was the price for the cut [which I would book at a later date] and the Keratin. When I got home I called just to make sure and they told me that was just for the Keratin. When I explained there was no way I would have ever agreed for $474 along with a $200+ cut because I don't have that kind of money. I said I could now not afford to get my hair cut, which is what I actually need. The manager was apologetic and said she was sorry I was quoted wrong about the price and told me all she could do was 10% off my next cut "when I was able to afford to come back in". That is $20 off. I saw the hair stylist Anthony Hernandez. He was very dismissive, snarky and rude. At the beginning, I told him I wanted a low maintence hair cut without a lot of layers that I could air dry because as a Mom, I didn't have a lot of extra time to blow dry or curl my hair. He mentioned me saying this multiple times throughout the appointment with an attitude of disdain. He brought it again out of nowhere mocking, "That's like saying you want to look like a Supermodel but don't want to wear makeup." I have had many "lived in" hair cuts before where this is not an insane ask. I really wanted curtain bangs and was showing him multiple photos of what I wanted, he barely looked at them and was just overall dismissive in his responses. I ended crying half way through because he was clearly so agitated and I was so uncomfortable in his chair feeling like I was inconveniencing him when I explained what I wanted. I told him, "I feel like you're really agitated with me and it's making me uncomfortable. He didn't say much in response. Someone acting annoyed with you while they have scissors in their hand cutting your hair is NOT a fun experience. I spent the second half of the haircut wiping away tears because I felt so dismissed and upset that what was supposed to be a fun afternoon was spent with a hairstylist that couldn't be bothered. I still tipped him 20% because I'm classy but I was not pleased tipping that amount for such a bad experience. In the end, very subpar haircut and I was super disappointed with how it turned out. I really hate to be doing this but I've gotten to the point where after leaving this salon my life was changed so I thought it was time to write a review. I left about a year ago with gorgeous platinum blonde hair as a double process. I honestly loved my color and was so excited about it. Unfortunately, about a month later, when I had wanted to return to get my roots touched up, I started noticing chunks of my hair falling out in the shower. As I was conditioning my hair and running my fingers through my hair a ridiculous amount of my hair would come out. I've cried a lot since this time last year but finally have come to terms with the fact that my hair will never be the same as it was before. I finally got my hair cut about 6 months ago to the shortest it has to ever been as the chunks had become too noticeable to cover up. I did my best to get a cute cut to embrace my new short hair but I miss my old hair every day. My hair is still breaking off to this day even after countless treatments and consultations with other salons. I reached my breaking point today when I went in a salon after over a year of visiting cutler and they told me my hair was extremely damaged and I shouldn't even think about getting anything done for at least another 6 months. I'm absolutely heart broken. I needed people to know my story so that they realize the dangers even going to a salon so highly reviewed. I wish every day that I hadn't gone in to this salon. Update: went in to the salon to see if they could help me remedy the situation in any way. I talked to the owner and he basically scoffed at the whole situation and then kicked me out of the salon. The salon is sleek and very nice. Great Vibe. Friendly staff. There was a gentleman at the desk who was super engaging. That being said, my daughter had her hair done after saving up months to do this on her own. She showed pictures and detailed what she wanted. Due to the pictures, they upcharged 40 dollars. We were ok with that since it was discussed prior. The end result was no change. Her hair looked the same. School started-not one person noticed-nor did i. I called in hopes the salon could make the correction and allow them to look at my daughters hair and prior pictures again. I left a message with Christmas, the receptionist, to have the owner(I think it was Carissa or Clarissa) call me back. Haven't had a good hair cut in 5 years since one of my previous hair stylists moved back to France but have tried pretty much every popular salon around soho like Blackstones and Spoke & Weal. They weren't bad, but just ok for me. I asked Emily at this location for a long layered haircut that would look good even with just air drying and no styling and boy did she deliver! I used to have to curl my hair previously to make my choppy haircuts look good, but I literally have fairytale hair now thanks to Emily! It's incredibly low maintenance and gave me the most volume and bounce I've had in my hair for years. I even got compliments from my guy friends who have never commented on my hair before. A couple months back I went to get my hair cut and they gave me a brand new stylist - Noah- who hadn't cut hair in years but is apparently friends with the manager so they gave him a chair without requiring him to go through their school. He cut my hair so badly that I had to go get it corrected. Luckily I tracked down a talented stylist who used to work there to managed to fix his mistakes and she agreed the hair cut was awful and made no sense. Then today - I decided to give them another shot but for color. I saw Elizabeth - but she was so rude upon me getting into the chair that I felt uncomfortable with her doing my hair. Without asking me anything about what I wanted she immediately said she only could do half highlights with a lot of attitude. Long over due review! I have been to Cutler soho 3x now and I am fully hooked on this salon and most importantly, I am completely devoted to Greg Cassese who took my very long thick hair to a "lob" (long bob). He changed my look and I haven't been this happy in a long time. Greg challenged me on the length to make sure I would be happy (not many stylist who do that these days) but I assured him that I knew how to style my hair. I used to only cut my hair maybe 3x a year and now I am going the minimum of every 3 months to maintain my new look. I found Greg on instagram (power of social media) and if you don't follow him now, you must. Everyone at the salon are super nice as well as the salon having the cool downtown vibe. If you are looking for someone who is going to listen to you, make suggestions based on your lifestyle as well as your hair texture, then Greg is the person to go to! After growing out my hair for 2 years from a short cut I had decided it was time to chop it off again. I knew of a stylist that worked here but unfortunately I didn't wait. What a bad move on my part. That's what I get for being impatient. I came in to Ryan Austin with a short pixie wig on that I had been wearing for the past few days to see if I was really ready to make the jump. I thought that would show him that I liked texture and get his opinion on length. should I go pixie short or keep it longer on top. I showed him a picture of a longer style with soft texture around the outline, length in the crown and overall a longer short cut. He agreed that we would take baby steps. I'm a barber at a barbershop in the area but I thought going to Cutler and paying 140 for a cut I would get someone that would be more attentive to my needs and give me a more feminine cut with more texture. This is obviously not his thing so Instead he went straight in and did scissor over comb taking it to a quarter of an inch around the sides and back. Whaaat? Scissor over comb? I could have had a barber at the shop do that for me if that's what I wanted! Or I could have done it my damn self. The sideburns or what's left of them aren't even either! So from shoulder length hair to waiting a few months until it grows out. Save your money. People are pretentious, the vibe sucks and they really don't give a shit what you want. I had the pleasure of going to Cutler Soho over the weekend for a blow dry. I have heard many great things about the salon through social media so I wanted to give it a try since I was in the area. I popped in on Saturday morning to see if they could fit me in and as luck would have it...I was met at the front desk by friendly and welcoming faces who promptly booked me with Armond. Despite the fact that the salon was mobbed, the vibe was upbeat and positive. When I was greeted by Armond it just continued the wonderful experience! He was one of the most delightful people I have ever met and radiates good vibes. Furthermore, he is a talented stylist who effortlessly made my hair look terrific and exactly as I had hoped for it to look. The skill and expertise he possesses was evident in the way he causally chatted and tuned into me all while making my blow dry and style look fabulous. We finished up with a big hug and smiles all around. He is fantastic and my new favorite person and stylist when I'm in NYC. I am looking forward to going back to this salon for color soon. My sister brought me to see Rachel Bodt last year to achieve a lighter, yet natural look. Rachel helped my sister lighten her own raven locks to a heavenly shade of golden blonde, and she assured me that she didn't trust anyone but Rachel to give me my first professional hair color. I was unbelievably nervous to dye my hair, and started imaging everything that could possibly go wrong. What if a lighter shade wouldn't really suit me at all? I had my second haircut with Greg Cassese yesterday, and I'm so glad I waited until Cutler reopened so I could get into Greg's chair again. He used the razor on my hair and gave me a shag-mullet (aka shullet) with curtain bangs both times. The first cut was six months ago and honestly my hair still looked great, but I wanted to get some dead ends and weight removed so I went back. When a haircut looks good six months later, you know it's a good haircut. Greg was patient and looked at my collage of reference photos and aligned on the language I was using to describe the details of what I want. I couldn't be happier with the haircut he gave me yesterday. I love it today, but also know it will bloom into something cool and awesome and will make shitty days seem better. I live in Columbus Ohio and came to NY for my first time. my regular hair stylist at home was on maternity leave so I figured where better to get your haircut than New York. Tried to put an appointment in on Monday but didn't get confirmed so I went into their salon and talked to the receptionist and some guy behind the counter. Turns out that guy was Rodney Cutler himself. Told them my story and he asked if I could come in tomorrow and said he would personally cut my hair. Also walked me over to the restaurant next door (Sadelles) and got me a reservation despite the high demand. One of the nicest most personable guys I have ever met and treated me with nothing but respect. Gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever gotten and shared his story with me. The greatest customer service experience and quality haircut I have ever received. I recommend this salon to everybody and everyone (24 y/o male).
