I want to start off by saying that I am currently a member of the gym and I have been for quite…read moresome time. I am rating the gym ok at 3 stars for a variety of reasons. I am going to start out with the worst thing or most disliked thing about the gym is the programming. The programming has no cycling to it and it seems completely random. You will do a weightlifting movement building strength in some form of rep scheme and then never touch it again workout for months. I have taken the CrossFit level 1 Certificate Course and that is not the way CrossFit is to be programmed. Second thing on programming is the workouts themselves. I would say at least 50% of the workouts have movements in them that only 1% of the gym can accomplish (ring muscle ups, bar muscle ups, chest to bar, rope climbs, etc) and there is no training for outside the 10 minutes or so in the class. Finally I will refer to the workouts again. The workouts that are programmed make you very susceptible to injury. What I mean by this is that one high rep movement, high rep squat movement and then the very next day you will do the same movement with another workout (high rep squats day one and then snatch squats Just yesterday on January 23rd the workout included 150 wall-ball workout and then today January 24th you have programming where 185lbs is over your head squatting with a barbell (another example of 1% of the class being able to do the movement or lift the prescribed weight). As someone who been injured before repetitive movements is where it starts and it will not go away. I will weight the equipment at a 5 and that is what holds my score up to a 3 overall. Almost all of the equipment is Rogue Fitness which is a great brand with one object here and there that is not. I rate the the coaching at a 3 because most of them are nice and truly care for you when it comes to working out and safety but some of them have no idea what they are talking about in regards to weightlifting or cardio work. They do not want you talking to any other gym member about how you learned something (weightlifting, cardio, double-unders, etc). The training has to come from them from their mouth otherwise you are potentially be called out for saying anything. I also find disappointing that they want to pick your pockets for any type of training outside of a normal class. I have never seen this in a gym before ever and it is disappointing. With the cost of this membership there should be no reason to do that. Drinks and food are fair enough to charge outside of membership fees because they have an actual retail cost to them. Every gym that I have been to has always has volunteer movement activities and this is my 7th gym I have been a member of. I know CrossFit gyms tend to be more expensive than others but $200 for an unlimited membership and then if you want to learn a new movement with a limited amount of people is ridiculous. Now they recently came out with weightlifting programming and if you want to do it outside of being with a coach you have "apply" like a job interview. The gym is way overpriced for what you get. This is one of 2 gyms in the Dumfries/Woodbridge area so are forced to choose. It is not worth the time or money to charge to teach a movement. Gym manager is a funny guy and I respect him but there needs to be some serious overhaul in the programming and cost to benefit analysis. The gym has recently gone through a change in ownership with same people who were already leading it and I hope it is for the good. I sincerely hope that they are able to make changes, preferably soon.

Super nice gym with ample equipment. Dropped in for a class with trainer Chris - he was really…read morefriendly and welcoming. Would recommend to anyone looking to get a good workout in!

It was a hot day on June 16th. There was music blaring and an MC calling for the next wave of…read morerunners to report to the starting line. People of all shapes and sizes gathered like cattle, ready to stampede off into the wilderness of Quantico Marine Base. This is a race, but not just any race. This is one of many obstacle races that are quickly becoming popular across America. I signed up for the upcoming Spartan Race and Tough Mudder. Both are at 9 to 12 miles of treacherous obstacles and mud. This race is 3.5 miles with a few obstacles, mud and hills. For those that plan on doing a Spartan Race or Tough Mudder, this is a good warm up. Or at least, this is a fun alternative to the 5ks that pop up around DC where you just run. A few of my friends registered and we all ran together. It was a morning of fun! Here's the list of obstacles: 1. Stair climb - after maybe a quarter mile from the starting line you come up to a stadium/track and go up. 2. Striking shields - a bunch of Marines are gathered at the top of the stairs with striking pads. You have to get through them as they "bump" you with them. 3. A-Frame - 7-8 foot wall that you have to climb over. 4. Hay bales - yep, a bunch of bales of hay scattered apart enough for you to leap over in sequence 5. Flutter kicks - when you reach this area, there's a Marine yelling at you all boot-camp style to get on the ground and do flutter kicks. SO GET ON THE GROUND MAGGOT! 6. Tires - just like those high school football days when the coach took his old tires, placed them on the ground and told you to run over them by placing your feet in their centers. 7. Tubes - get on your hands and knees and make like a hamster while crawling through these. 8. Mud Crawl -There's a nice area of mud at the end of the tubes to make you feel like frosted cake. 9. Berm Climb - Just a big lump or mini hill that you have to climb over 10. Mud Pit#1 - That's right maggot! Get in there and get dirty! There's nothing like running all caked in mud. You shoes get heavier too! 11. Spider web - Crawling under a cargo net. 12. Jacks - Another Marine awaits you, commanding you to give him 10 jumping jacks. It's really easy. 13. Hay Hurdle - remember the hay bales? Yeah. 14. Ammo Can Carry - Just like it sounds. Pick up and ammo can and carry it a few yards. 15. Mud Pit #2 - Because the first one wasn't enough. You gotta keep that muddy feeling with you throughout the race. 16. Cargo Net - They placed a cargo net on a muddy hill to help you out. It's a good leg workout. 17. Fire truck hose - You're almost done! Now's your chance to get a little clean for that finish line photo finish! 18. The finish line - you get your medal, water, banana, energy jelly beans and a few other keepsakes. Afterwards you get free beer and party to some music. You and your friends celebrate your accomplishment by taking post-race photos where you look like hell(and feel like it too). Then you go to work and tell war stories and show your battle wounds. So if you're into outdoorsy things or just running gets a little boring. Try one of these out. It's $40 to register. Loads of fun and bragging rights to you friends, and another thing to cross of your bucket list.

Lisa is a nurse with a masters in exercise science, and Pete is a former trainer for Army Rangers. In short, they know their stuff (unlike so many trainers at Big Box gyms who take two month certification course and then offer pseudoscientific advice that results in injury). Since working out with them, my back problems have drastically decreased, while my overall fitness has increased. And not only are they great trainers, they're great people! The gym itself is great. It's small, but it has all the equipment anyone would need for a workout, and they have several unique machines I haven't seen elsewhere. Plus, it's quiet and just has a better feel/vibe than so many corporate places. They don't have rows and rows of bikes, treadmills, etc.; it's not that kind of gym. It's a local business that specializes in personalized training for people who are serious about their health and fitness. If you're looking to get in shape (or in better shape, but with people who know their stuff and can guide you in your path to improvement), do yourself a favor, and hire Pete or Lisa to train you. For me, that decision has been one of the best investments I've ever made. In short, I can not recommend these guys enough!
