Dr. Newlon treated Jenbert Jr. 2's colic and reflux at 7 weeks old and helped re-align Jenbert Jr. 1 at two and a half years after a fall off the bed when she was 7 months old. She made all the difference in JJ2's disposition: JJ2 went from being a fussy, colicky baby whom I felt tasked with taking care of, to a smiley, inquisitive soul who I was finally able to bond with. JJ2 was able to latch correctly afterward and nursed because she wanted to, not just because she had to. When the bed collapsed under JJ2 at four months old, I didn't even think about calling the pediatrician. I took her in to Dr. Newlon to get the bump on her head worked out. I have been seeing Dr Newlon for about 5 years now. I understand the people who feel she is not communicative enough. This is a particular style common among many osteopaths. There is a world renowned osteopath in my family, his name is magic to osteopaths internationally, and believe me, he is also totally silent during treatment and doesn't say much more than "that's better" afterwards. He has year long waiting lists.... Yes, it is different and can be disconcerting. Just focus on how you feel - and yes, the body does unwind, and yes, sometimes it can take weeks. It can be subtle and slow, and then one day, a month later, you notice that the formerly constant pain is gone. Amazing physician. Dr. Newlon has worked on me after I've had some major head trauma and also some back issues that they were considering back surgery for and she was able to manipulate it enough gently without any invasiveness so that it's tolerable now and we don't have to go that route. I also have a younger daughter who is around braces age and she has a very severe overbite and Dr. Newlon's actually working on her her over right now so that when we sent her to the orthodontist, this is that severity will be much less work less severe and hopefully will be able to have braces on longer shorter or that won't be much pain, etc. but this this doctor is absolutely magic if you have chronic pain or have had a hip replacement or anything major and you go to her this this whole experience to open my eyes I did not know that medical medicine like this existed. it's it's it's absolutely imagine magical so highly recommend. read more

I suffered a head injury at work and was diagnosed with a mild concussion at the urgent care clinic. The urgent care doctor saw me for about 2 minutes and walked away, then the nurse told me that symptoms usually reside after about a day. I left feeling like they were blowing me off, but I'd never had a concussion before so I took their word for it. After missing quite a few days of work and a full week of persistent symptoms (headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, back pain, neck pain, not being able to lean over, which I need to do for work, and not sleeping well), I needed to find a real solution. One of my clients recommended Dr. Newlon after hearing about my concussion. Dr. Newlon is amazing and JP was very nice and helpful on the phone. The prices are comparable and in some cases lower than other osteopathic doctors I called. Dr. Newlon came in on her day off to see me and spent over an hour treating me. She took the time to explain the process to me in a way that was easy to comprehend without being patronizing. Though she does understandably become quiet when she is concentrating, she was very pleasant to chat with. By the end of the session I felt immeasurably better. In fact, I felt so much better that my boss immediately noticed the change when I came back to work. Dr. Newlon has seen my toddler, newborn, and me. She was instrumental in working out the kinks in my pelvis, that were causing me to buckle every other time I got up near the end of my pregnancy. Pain and buckling -- bad for mom and baby. Incidentally, my tissues loosened up/got into proper position after this sacral work, and I was no longer running to the bathroom multiple times a night -- common in pregnancies. What a relief! She also found two ribs too close together, and one gentle "hug" later, it was fixed! (Oh, was that what was causing my chest pain when I get exhausted?) For subsequent visits, I did have to juxtapose with another osteopath in order to maintain the pain relief I needed during and post-pregnancy (as my body kept expanding/pulling and then shrinking/healing.) Dr. Newlon was fairly booked through the holidays so could not see me more often. However, she did come into the office on her day off to see me for my very first appointment, for which I was very grateful (and relieved my husband of his worries.) I have found Dr. Newlon's specialties to be for pregnancies, newborns, young kids, and head bones/tissues. It's amazing when a health practitioner can say, "The problem was partially a twisted diaphragm/stomach, and I've fixed it." -- or similar. Dr. Barbara, as she calls herself to the kids, explains her treatment (what she found and treated) in technical terms and summarized versions, suggesting follow-up visits as necessary. She's firmly committed to getting kids a good start on life and offers half off for one-year olds and younger. In osteopath circles, she's apparently famous for her work with kids. I know it's hard to figure out sometimes if something's working for your kid -- especially treatments that are for the long-term. We've noticed better sleep and nursing, coincidentally also sometimes with homeopathic remedies. Who says you can't do anything about colic? read more

In my opinion, Dr. Newlon is an exceptional physician who provides professional, caring support for her patients. Not only is she a highly trained physician, but also a highly-skilled "healer" who works very intuitively. She uses gentle manipulation and pressure to release or correct structural issues. Additionally, she integrates homeopathy as an adjunct healing modality, which can be an exceptionally helpful tool. Over the past 11 years, I have referred many friends to her, some of whom appreciated what she has to offer; for others, it wasn't exactly the best fit. If you are the kind of person who needs to feel/hear your back crack when receiving an adjustment, then she's probably not the best physician for you. I found Dr. Newlon 11 years ago when my son was six months old. His facial structure was becoming asymmetrical - one side more pronounced than the other. Our pediatrician, at the time, recommended a cranial X-ray in order to determine whether the cranial bones had fused early (at that age, the infant must be strapped to a board; and, the most likely outcome would have been surgery). My husband and I researched other approaches and were directed to manipulative osteopathy through a chiropractor with whom we had worked. We contacted the Osteopathic Center for Children & Families in San Diego and received two Marin referrals - Dr. Rimon Issac & Dr. Newlon. Because we live in West Marin, we scheduled appointments with both doctors on the same day (separated by a couple of hours). Dr. Issac, who we saw first, seemed as though he was trying very hard to manipulate our son's skull (the doctor's hands were visibly shaking). Our son screamed throughout the entire session. In contrast, the session with Dr. Newlon was a peaceful, gentle experience. Over the course of 5-6 sessions spread over a few months, she was able to gently release that cranial bones that were compressed from a very long labor. He is now almost 12 years old and has a completely normal facial structure. After such a positive outcome, my husband began working with her to alleviate and correct issues arising from being 6'7", followed soon after by myself (to help with hip displacement arising from my pregnancy). When our daughter was born in 2005, we took her to see Dr. Newlon within 3 weeks of her birth. One thing to know: when Dr. Newlon works on you or your child, she is very focused on the person receiving the treatment. I could see where, if a parent hasn't personally established a relationship with her as a patient with insight into what occurs during a treatment, s/he could feel put off by not fully understanding what is happening when she is working on the child. When asked, Dr. Newlon is happy to explain her work with the body. We consider our doctor's visits with Dr. Newlon to be an investment in our health and well-being. My family has been seeing Dr. Barbara Newlon for quite a while and we appreciate her care very much. She has helped us through quite a few situations with osteopathic care and natural remedies, whereas other providers that we had seen wanted to immediately prescribe drugs. New patients have an hour long appointment, and I've never had a doctor spend so much with me and actually listen to what I am saying and not just hand me a prescription or send me off with no answers. Something is off with Dr. Newlon - perhaps some form of autism or other social disfunction. She seems to actually dislike people, which in her profession is not a good thing. I saw her the first time quite a while ago, with good technical results. However, my time with her and in her office was always extremely awkward and uncomfortable. Whenever I asked her what she was doing, I would either get absolutely no reply - just complete silence - or an abrupt, vague answer, followed by a series of personal questions about my life. Here's the Finale: I was drawn back in after years of not seeing her, because the receptionist told me they were having a 1/2 price special. I asked Dr. Newlon to work on my severe migraine and neck pain. She worked only on my BACK for 20-25 minutes, then abruptly left the office, only turning around briefly on her way out to tell me to come back next week, when she would THEN she would work on my neck! Needless to say, this left me completely stunned and speechless, as well as in a severe amount of physical pain. I couldn't afford to come back again - it was at a time when I was very low on funds. Apparently, her "1/2 price" ploy also meant you only get 1/2 the treatment!!! She appeared devoid of a basic, normal, human regard for the pain I was in. I was a patient of Dr. Newlon for two months. I had been experiencing pain on the right side of my lower back for over a year. After three different doctors, MRIs, X-rays, Bone Scan, several injections into the site, the pain continued. One doctor told me I needed a new hip, the other two disagreed. It was suggested I see an osteopath. After extensive research, I choose Dr. Newlon. I was seeing her weekly. At one point I told her the pain disappeared for an entire night after one of my sessions with her. But the following day I took a two mile walk and the pain returned with a vengeance. My next and last visit with her was after that walk. She said I was locked up and began working on my back. Then abruptly said she wanted to review my chart. It is my belief that was the FIRST time she had ever read it. She became irritated and annoyed as she was reading and then announced I needed a second opinion. She left the room and never returned. I was stunned. I eventually got dressed and went into the lobby where her receptionist gave me a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. There was no explanation, no compassion - I was sent on my way in tears. I have never in my life been treated so poorly. I believe Dr. Newlon has healing powers. She's been practicing for years and is highly educated in her field. However, and unfortunately, she lacks the kindness and sensitivity a doctor must have to treat the whole person. read more

I have a fairly rare birth defect in my lumbar spine which has been managed very well through chiropractic care. I've been active and an athlete all of my life, and my back has hardly been a problem since it was diagnosed and initially treated over thirty years ago. I saw Dr. Newlon three times, presumably for a shoulder issue. The first appointment went well and I left feeling good, and my shoulder felt much better. Two days after my second appointment, however, i began experiencing muscle spasms in my right glute. I went for the third appointment and told Dr. Newlon about the pain; she said something about the body "unraveling" as the layers of trauma (I'm paraphrasing here) are revealed. After the third visit, the pain in my glute became so severe that I couldn't walk. I am a tennis player, and tennis was out of the question. Ironically, my shoulder hasn't felt as good as it felt then in years. I went to my chiropractor and with a few adjustments, my back is now stabilizing. The theory as to what went wrong is that Dr. Newlon either pushed the unstable vertebrae forward or (my theory), the treatment was so vigorous that it irritated the vertebrae in the lumbar spine. Regardless, I cancelled my subsequent appointments. During my last chiropractor visit, the doctor asked me if my clavicle hurt. I said it did, and he did an adjustment on it that ended up making the clavicle worse. Frustration hardly describes what I was/am feeling, and I called Dr. Newlon to see if she'd work on my shoulder for me since the previous shoulder treatments were so successful. So here's the rub (pardon the play on words): Dr. Newlon refused to work on my shoulder, claiming that she worked on the whole body, that everything is interconnected, and that she couldn't work on just one body part regardless of the fact that I have a very sensitive, touchy, and troublesome lumbar spine. I told her she could work on any part of my body she wanted, but that I didn't want my lumbar spine touched. I think she took offense to this because she mentioned something about lack of trust which was hardly the case. My back is touchy, I'm active, and the line between inflammation and not with my back is thin. I feel like she made my feelings about her when they are not. They are about me. As I mentioned, when we initially met, I was very clear as to why I was there. If she had told me that I was in for multiple treatments to unravel all the past accidents and trauma my body had experienced, I'd have left. I was there for my shoulder, nothing more, and I find her refusal to continue to treat me unprofessional. Professional people don't abandon their patients. So I've spent nearly $700 in her office (which I don't have, really) and I'm left with . . . an achy shoulder, a sore back, three weeks out of my life and off the tennis court. I think Dr. Newlon is a talented, caring professional, but I strongly feel she has her own agenda. At least I feel that this was the case with me.I also feel she is very inflexible, and that she pursues her own intentions and interests, regardless of the intentions or wishes of her patients. I also feel mislead. I was told at the beginning I'd probably need about three treatments. We know how that turned out. read more

I feel truly blessed to have found Dr. Barbara Newlon. I started taking my son there when he was only four months old. His body had a subtle torque due to the birth and he spit up constantly. I had taken him to see Chiropractors but the results only lasted a day or two and his body would settle back into its old pattern. With Dr. Newlon's work I noticed results immediately and they lasted. My son's whole countenance changed after Dr. Newlon resolved his musculoskeletal problems. His body was flexible and healthy, the spitting up was dramatically reduced and his face went from looking like a concerned old man to that of a happy baby. I realized that he had been in discomfort and pain for months up until Dr. Newlon worked on him and I could see such changes in him. When he got an ear infection at age 8 months she treated it with osteopathic manipulation and a homeopathic remedy. The ear infection cleared up within a day or two and he didn't have to take any yucky antibiotics. He has only had two ear infections since and he is 5 1/2 years old now! I credit that good healthy streak to regular treatments with Dr. Newlon. As said, my son is now 5 1/2 and my daughter is 4 years old. When they wipe out on their scooters or take a bad fall on the playground I take them to Dr. Newlon to sort out the kinks. They both love to go to her. They say that it hurts sometimes but that they feel better afterward. Both my husband and I see her for back and neck issues. I feel dramatic improvements immediately. I am returning to Dr. Newlon after over ten years, probably 15 actually. Over the years I have tried a number of different types of bodywork and ended up going to massage therapy school, and even though my time as her patient was before this I remember enough to know the highly specific way she was able to do the manipulations. As some of the other reviews have noted, Dr. Newlon is not as talkative and this may be interpreted as bad bedside manner. To me this hardly qualifies as any grounds to take even one star off, especially if you are going in for bodywork rather than as a health care consumer that wants to be treated nicely from a customer service perspective. As far as communication, I can understand wanting to be informed, however the service provided is not meant to be educational but rather treatment for your condition. To put it in context some of this is a psychological need whereas my recollection of Dr. Newlon is she does largely stick to the facts, but at the same time was quite cordial and even joyful. I will come back to update this review after my appointment, but I am writing this now even after such a long time because although there are many highly skilled bodyworkers in this area, a practitioner at Dr. Newlons level is top notch and frankly anyone with a good level of body awareness would be able to tell. She has an outstanding reputation in the community so although osteopathic care does definitely cost more (especially if you're paying out of pocket as I am) there are simply very few practitioners you can *count on* for good results rather than having to resort to a "try and see" approach even if there is relative certainty from previous experience. Just from a common sense perspective, 30 years of experience, highly trained and working with infants should say a lot about how that informs the bodywork. I have been a patient of Dr. Newlon's for over 20 years, and I am blessed to be her patient. I have a very physical job and will occasionally have back strains. After treatments I am as good as new. Can't say enough. My entire family, parents, husband and 7 year old son, are patients as well. My son was 6 days old when he meet Dr. Newlon. And due to her treatments he is exceptionally healthy and happy. Friends and neighbors we have recommended to Dr. Newlon have also been pleased and have become her clients. First time visits are more for the detailed consultation and treatment. Make sure to check with your insurance company and send in claim forms. I found Dr. Newlon in the yellow pages a several of weeks after 9/11/01. I became a regular patient of hers until 2011 when I relocated out of the area. I have had the good fortune to experience several gifted healers in my life, but none had the gift like Dr. Newlon. There's magic in that lady. I believe she offers a sliding scale for those less financially secure. So yes, her gift comes at a premium, as it should. It doesn't surprise me that some mothers have difficult experiences in these treatments. I think they would have less trauma if they received treatments as well. I hope mothers will continue to let Dr. Newlon set their children on a healthy path, and realize they too need to do healing around these difficult births. I highly recommend oestopathic manipulation in general, as an evolved form of preventative care, and Dr. Newlon, as a highly skilled practitioner. I have been seeing Dr. Newlon since my return to Marin (from San Francisco) over 10 years ago. I recently was rear-ended by a Volvo SUV at 35 mph when I was at a full stop. Dr. Newlon healed the strain to my spin and radiating pain in about 6 treatments over the course of about 6 months. Our daugther has been seeing her since she was one week old for 6 years. Our daughter has rarely been sick and even then quickly recovers from a flu or cold. She looks forward to visiting Dr. Barbara, as she calls her, to play with her amazing collection of toys and coloring books. Dr. Barbara Newlon is an extremely gifted osteopathic physician. I have gone to her on and off for the past 10 years for various musculoskeletal problems and I highly regard her work. It works for me very well. She may not have a bedside manner that is acceptable to some,she doesn't talk much, but her skills are excellent and if you have a question or don't understand what she's doing, ask .... and guess what? She will give you a coherent, perfectly logical answer.. She knows what she's doing in an area (craniosacral work) where the wrong person can do a lot of harm. I have been treated by many osteopaths and so I know what I'm talking about. Dr. Newlon's reputation is well-respected in her profession and she doesn't need my review. The only reason I am writing this is that I am very upset by the nasty review left in April (which I found while looking for Barbara's phone number) and I can't stand my doctor being trashed by someone who is so ignorant. First of all, have you been anywhere in the medical system lately? For 15 minutes of indifferent care at Kaiser, I pay $85. If you see a specialist, you can pay 5 and 600 for an hour. Comparatively, Newlon's prices are in line with other practitioner specialists in the Bay Area. You got an hour of her time for $165 and you're complaining? WTF is right. If you want Ashland prices,honey, go to Ashland. Secondly, homeopathic belladonna is not a poisonous plant. Before you trash someone's reputation over this, do your homework. Five minutes on the internet will clear that right up for you. And finally, I can guarantee you that Dr. Newlon was treating your child, even though you didn't know what she was doing. Did you ask? Do you also tell your brain surgeon you don't like their techniques? I mean, all they do is take their scalpel and cut stuff. Obviously, there was a big communication problem here. Nobody explained enough, which can be a problem with Barbara, but also, apparently, nobody asked. If you understand what someone is doing and you still don't like it, fine, but clearly, you had no idea what was going on. And I'll give you this: you want to know what's happening when your child is being treated. But if you had concerns, why didn't you ask? If you need a cranial osteopath, you will be fine with Dr. Newlon. I don't give her 5 stars because she does not communicate all that well at least in my experience. In my personal experience, Dr Newlon is the best there is at what she does. I have been to chiropractors of the Palmer method, "network" chiropractors, and MDs for my various issues over the years. They each have their areas of special expertise. For those issues for which you have seen a Palmer chiropractor and not recovered, I recommend you pay Dr Newlon a visit and see the difference. She takes more time with you than a traditional Palmer chiropractor and works with the entire spinal column from tip to top of the head in a way that no Palmer person even tries to do. She was very unprofessional. She worked on my daughter for chronic ear infections and didn't offer any information about what she was doing. My daughter screamed in pain until she threw up. I was obviously very upset and Dr. Barbara cleaned up the mess, left the room, and went to her next patient. She didn't say a word to us after that. Not even, "I'm sorry." I would strongly advise against seeing her for pediatrics. Maybe she's OK with adults, but I urge to look elsewhere for your baby/toddler. read more

Dr. Barbara Newlon has been treatment my children, me and my husband for more than four years. She is competent, thorough and caring. Her fees may be expensive, but realistically, this is the San Francisco Bay Area... just compare her fees with chiropractors and sacral cranials and you will realize it is not bad. Dr. Newlon is a true healer. I first took my infant son to see Dr. Newlon for body work because we were struggling with latching while breast feeding. I learned in this process that most newborns and new moms can benefit from osteopathic treatment. My son has been to see Dr. Newlon about 5 times since last November and he loves his visits. I'm not certain if all of his disposition is attributed to his treatments but I will say that he is a most good natured child and rarely cries. I believe he must feel pretty good because he doesn't cry or fuss much outside of hungry/tired cues. This leads me to think that many babies must feel poorly if they do cry and fuss constantly and it seems this could be avoidable through treatment to rule out physical reasons behind the fussing from their little bodies being pulled out of whack from the birthing process. I could not see or feel what happened during during my C-Section but my partner informs me that our baby was pulled out very forcefully and it makes sense that their bodies need some TLC and movement back into place after that trauma. I saw Dr. Newlon to work on my c-section scar which was very painful and had a constant pulling sensation. In one visit my scar pain was fixed. I also threw my back out of whack after giving birth and could barely move. Dr. Newlon fixed these issues as well and I am seeing her for a full series, tune up. My experience undergoing treatment with Dr Barbara Newlon was nothing other than an unbelievably horrific nightmare. I am a very active and health conscious person and I take great care of my body. I went to her because I was experiencing occasional knee pain. After the second treatment I had a very sharp pain in my right shoulder blade and I had to take Ibuprofen for two days. Dr Newlon reassured me that new pains were a "completely normal" part of osteopathic treatment. After each and every treatment new and bizarre pains appeared in my back, neck, and arms. After the ninth adjustment my body collapsed and the cascade of pains on my neck, arms, back and legs intensified. Dr Newlon insisted that this was all a "normal" part of osteopathy. I have been incapacitated by her treatment and have been unable to do any kind of exercise except for mild walking since that adjustment. It has been eight difficult and trying months. Medical professionals confirmed there was nothing "normal" about the new pains her adjustements brought on. Trusting Dr Newlon with my body was the worst decision I ever made in my entire life. I used to be an active and athletic person. Today I am living full of aches and pains I did not have prior to my treatment with Dr Newlon, I feel like an eighty year old train wreck survivor. Dr Newlon never apologized to me or agreed to any resolution. I wish Yelp would allow users to give *negative* stars. I would give her as many *negative* stars as are in the heavens. My entire family (husband, 3 kids, myself, mom, grandfather, uncle, sister) currently see Dr Newlon and have for over the last 10 years. I personally had a wonderful experience with her for neck injury that became chronic pain. She was able to get me to a place where I was no longer in agony and was able to build my strength in and around my neck. 8 years later my neck is healthy & happy. In 2012 I brought my 2 week old son to see Dr Newlon. We had an extremely fast birth and wanted to address the bones in his head. I felt very comfortable with her working with my newborn. I continue to bring him to Dr Newlon when he takes a bad spills. I also received treatment from Dr Newlon to help heal the trauma from pregnancy & childbirth. My older son received treatment for his asthma, he hasn't used an inhaler for almost 6 years now. I can not express how grateful we are that Dr Newlon has repeatedly helped our family over the years. I am a yoga teacher and often refer students with injuries to Dr Newlon and I have received nothing but positive feedback. If you want a specialist who will work with you holistically then Dr Newlon is that doctor.
