During this session I described for her my difficulty in convincing my wife that we needed therapy, and how difficult it was to get her to agree to counseling and find a time that she was willing to meet. We scheduled a session for the next week. I talked to my wife about how important the next session was and she promised to go. A few days after I told her all this and more, she cancelled our appointment because she decided that time "didn't work for her". Now we are back at square one. For this and other reasons, I would not recommend this therapist to anyone, and I will personally never see anyone in the United Health Care network again.

I spent several years seeing Dr. Marx…read more And while Dr. Marx ("Judy") is a pretty good therapist, many of my problems never improved or were unresolved. She thought I had "traumatic" experiences. I didn't know what "trauma" was or how it was treated when she first told me. I felt pretty lost in knowing what to do. The only thing she could recommend was EMDR, which she thought might be helpful in the treatment of trauma. She couldn't provide any other names of therapies that were used to treat trauma, names of practitioners in EMDR, or any resources that I could read that would help find help. "The Body Keeps Score", a book about trauma and its treatment, was published in 2015. Dan Siegel published a book on Healing Trauma in 2003... a long list. My first recommendation is that if you have a traumatic history (or think you may have) I would NOT recommend Dr. Marx. My second comment is for a somewhat well-educated therapist, she spent very little effort (if any) to help me find resources... There are dozens of therapies that are used for trauma: cognitive therapies (CBT), somatic therapies (dealing with the sensations in the body, "interoceptively", see Peter Levine's), Daniel Siegel's has written and researched widely on trauma.... , Coherence Therapy and memory reconsolidation (Bruce Ecker) .... Judy was unaware and unable to find any resources. Perhaps I shouldn't be. but I was disappointed with her lack of assistance.

I found this establishment through a simple Google. I wanted a therapist geared for grief and loss, not just some psychobabble physician insisting on giving me a drug followed with a pat on the head and a simple 'good luck!' So far after two appointments I think this place is fantastic. They are great working with you to schedule appointments around your busy schedule, including some Saturday and late evening appointment times. The rooms are quiet and peaceful, my therapist is kind and non-judgmental, and the place is easy to find off red line Van Ness metro. If you find yourself needing some extra help coping with loss and grief, make an appointment here. If you find it's not for you, no harm no foul. There is no shame in asking for help! They do take insurance, just call ahead and check if they accept yours when making an appointment.

After requesting premarital counseling and describing our relationship situation to Dr Pearl, she suggested that we see Dr Sarah Gubits, an associate at her office who not only specialized in couples therapy, but had Saturday availability. Every session we had was extremely challenging, but refreshing as we learned how to communicate with each other. Dr Gubits was there to guide the discussion, rather than chime in with over-analysis; she was there to calm us down and feel comfortable around each other to talk about anything. I suppose going to therapy was like going to the gym - it was hard to get off the couch and know you'll face certain pain, yet afterward you feel rewarded for the struggles you faced together. The sessions were very expensive, as imago generally is, but they were very accomodating with insurance and billing. It was worth skipping our usual Friday night dates, as we felt so much stronger and closer as a couple than any fancy dinner date could.

My psychiatrist passed away suddenly, and I had an urgent need for a therapy session. My wife made an appointment but then realized that she couldn't use it and that it was more important that I see him instead. I left several messages telling him that it was an emergency and that I would like to take her slot. He didn't return any of the calls, so I showed up at his office at the time my of my wife's appointment. He acknowledged having received but failed to return my call but refused to see me. When I told him it was urgent and asked why, he refused to answer and then threatened to call security. The idea that a licensed physician would act this way is unconscionable. I cannot stress enough that potential patients should find a different psychiatrist.
