100% gluten-free. November 2025
Rachel S.

I am currently in Spain for the second time this year and let me just say that the chocolate and gluten-free churros that I had at Bar Nico in Des Moines, Iowa of all places were the best I've had - far better than any of the chocolate I've ever had in Spain hands down. I honestly don't know how this place is in business with their incredibly affordable Happy Hour. We nearly got one of everything because it was in the $5-7 range for each dish. Even their normal prices are fantastic for meals. We definitely enjoyed the chicken wings and I loved the black squid ink tortillas that were part of the chimichangas. We loved basically everything we ordered and it was so nice that the entire menu was naturally gluten-free as a celiac. I live in Vegas and have talked about flying back to Iowa specifically so that we can eat here again, that's how much we liked it. Service was fast and polite, the ambiance felt moody and cool. Our group of five came to Bar Nico and none of us live in that area, but we thought we'd give it a try. I won't say that we were surprised because we had no expectations but the food, the ambience the service and the employees were all outstanding. The service was amazing , at times we had two employees at our table doing different things. Our server was excellent, well versed in the menus for good and drinks (there seemed to be 25 different margaritas). We all had tacos of different types all were great! I highly recommend Bar Rico for the food, service and alcoholic beverages!

Always an amazing experience!! Not your standard Mexican fare, but an elevated experience of fusion flavors that just leaves you for wanting more! Great service great ambience amazing food. I've been to this establishment now several times and it never disappoints. What more can I say? This is a must stop for foodies.

Came here with my good friend to try this spot out back in September and service was great! Love that they offer a lot of gluten free options. Having a gluten allergy myself I really appreciate places like this because it's sometimes hard to go try new spots when they don't really cater to people with allergies. We had two appetizers because how can you not get guacamole at a Mexican restaurant. I was kind of disappointed that the portion was kind of small for two people. There were more chips than guacamole. I drank a refreshing glass of Paloma and had two Al pastor tacos with super soft blue tortillas. The al pastor was tasty and tender. We finished it off with some churros that I was so glad were not only Gluten-free but delicious. I recommend to come try it out for yourself. I love the creativity of some of these dishes so I'm looking forward to trying out more.

A Must-Visit Spot - Food, Drinks & Vibes On Point! Bar Nico absolutely blew us away! Every single dish was packed with bold, fresh flavor--from the bright, citrusy ceviche to the rich and comforting chicken enchiladas. The scallop tacos were melt-in-your-mouth perfect, and the Gulf Coast rice was a flavor bomb we're still dreaming about. The caipirinhas were dangerously good--refreshing and just the right amount of kick--and the margaritas were top-tier (definitely try more than one!). The service was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the ambiance hit that sweet spot between fun and laid-back. Great music, good energy, and an all-around vibe that makes you want to linger. We'll definitely be back. Bar Nico nailed it!

I am obsessed with this place! The food, service, and energy are all fantastic! I got to try their restaurant week menu and I do hope they continue to participate every year now! The wagyu carne asada was delicious! I especially loved the sweet corn gazpacho - the lil dumpling complimented the soup so well. I was definitely in a food coma afterwards but it was all so worth it! Can't wait to come back here again!

Came back for dinner with a couple of my New York business partners. The meal and service were fabulous as always. The mezcal based old fashioned was straight up awesome.

FOOD: We started with some drinks and guac and salsa for the table. My Paloma was nice - it had some fruitiness added to your classic Paloma but it wasn't too sweet. The guac was a bit small for our party of four, so I recommend maybe getting one guac for each pair. For mains I got the Campechano Tacos, which was a pulled steak and burnt tips vibe, which I really enjoyed. SERVICE: They were definitely understaffed all around for the evening. Our server was doing the best job she could, but it was a bit of a bummer to have to remind about orders both kitchen and bar, so it ended our special dinner a bit earlier than anticipated. I hope if I return the service experience may impact my overall view of the restaurant.

Gross, not authentic. It's as pretentious as they come. The cost doesn't match the quality.

Maybe that's the point though, in what feels like a much, much less scary walk down into hell (not a regular hell but a cool hell, right Regina?) put extra emphasis on any word in the sign and you're still left with a mischievous message. The average person will not come to this bar, and that's a good thing. The "bar scene" in general is mostly gross and average and can have the bulk of the flock, and flock right off with it. Black Sheep seems to attract a whole lot of "other," and I really dig that. On top of being a really great concept, the execution thereof is impeccable. It makes its point without coming across as inauthentic, contrived or gimmicky. Hard to do when your schtick is so niche and obvious. Applause. Bartenders were very nice. Crowd of people were very nice. I like being able to dance next to people without dancing with them. I did this here and it worked out well. Just some pleasant eye contact, "hey, you're having fun too, we're twins!" nods, brief mimicry of one another's moves, and that's it. That's exactly how it should be sometimes. Music was mostly okay. There were moments where it was sublime, moments where it was just fun to dance to, moments where I zoned out, and moments where I went "What in the actual hell is this guy on and why am I being audibly assaulted with such nonsense?" I kinda like that though. Just because it's not my jam doesn't mean it's not someone else's. There's a sign above the tables that reads "No Requests" which is awesome. Whomever is spinning gets to do their thing and everyone just needs to handle it. Yes. Yes. Yes. I'll be black for sure. I mean back. Back to the black. Back to Black Sheep. Baa. Did she just....? What I found was a little gem off of one of the main roads in downtown Des Monies. Even before you enter this self described "Tiki Bar" you see all the brick buildings, and then you see an actual grass covered roof...yep that's the place and a really nice touch. The interior is equally cool and spacious, you are greeted by the bar area immediately when you walk in. To your right are comfy couches and instagram friendly neon wall signs, with that signature tiki touch of floral patterns and great lighting. The location is connected to a Asian food restaurant, so they get their food from them as you drink some of the most well crafted adult drinks I've had in a while. I came for happy hour on a Saturday 4:00pm-6:30pm. The drinks were basically 2.00 off with discounted food, the menu is limited to mostly chicken wraps and crab rangoons etc. I will say the portions were filling and very delicious. The star of the show was my El Colmillo, a tequila based drink with lime, orange juice, lime. The bartender did say it's all pre mixed, and that day she subbed the tequila with Casamigos, because the house tequila was out. Customer service was great, until it wasn't. Our server was excellent, until a guy came in off break and they seemed to have some tension. She really didn't have that same positive energy as before, otherwise an overall excellent experience. Pro Tip: Take a walk over to "Hello, Marjorie", it's a completely different vibe but drinks there are just as good...if not better. Go see Travis, he is 10/10 at "Hello, Marjorie".

The cocktails themselves were decent, you definitely come here for the vibe if you want to be scared. This was truly a unique and memorable experience, which I can't say of ever cocktail bar I've been to. The servers were also committed to the bit, randomly blaring an air horn to shock patrons (this only happened once in the hour we were there). Definitely not for the faint of heart. I wouldn't come here alone. Really cool spot.
