We were on vacation driving towards Bar Harbor when I noticed the break lost function! It was a hilly road with lots of up / down hill driving. Potentially, a very dangerous situation! So I pulled over and noticed fluid dripping down my right front tire. Thinking that's probably the break fluid, I searched the GPS for the closest auto repair shop and Bar Harbor Auto Repair came up. Luckily it was only 1km away. Scott was very knowledgeable and found what was wrong right away. The break hose was not bolted onto the knuckle and as a result, the rubber hose had been rubbing against the rim and eventually it got so thin that when the break was applied while driving, the hose just blew out. The fluid sprayed out as the hose had been chewed thin enough and won't hold any pressure. I had work done on the car in the same area (axel) two days ago by a local garage. That might be why the bolt was missing. He called three parts places until he found the break hose, but that wouldn't arrive until the next day, a Sunday, when he is closed. So the earliest he could fix our car is Monday morning. But by Sunday night, we were suppose to be in Portland be back to Canada on Monday. He was kind enough to pick up our part from Ellsworth at 8:30 in the morning and come to work on Sunday to fix our car for us! He also dropped everything he was doing to make about 20 calls for us to car rentals and they were all out of cars. The closest car we could get is in Bangor. He also called us a taxi to go to Bangor to pick up our rental car, called multiple local hotels in Bar Harbor. Because of this wonderful guy, a potential vacation crisis was averted and we got back home in time and safely! This is the best service I have ever received from an auto repair service. He had to work later, after his shop closed on saturday because of the time we used up to make phone calls for us. He also came back to work at 8 a.m on a Sunday when he already had previous plans. He just went out of his way to help us. We couldn't have asked for a better person to help us in a dire situation. Thank you so so much! read more

We were on a family vacation in Bar Harbor and a loud noise from the left front wheel developed. I thought it was either the brakes or a wheel bearing. Either way I figured I was in for a big repair bill while on vacation. Also thought it would be a real pain to be without the car for a few days. There aren't many service places in Bar Harbor. While eating dinner at a local restaurant, I asked the waiter if he knew of a repair place and he suggested a local place - Bar Harbor Auto Repair. It was late evening and I drove over there just to see what their business hours were. Ben (I think that was his name) was in the next-door laundry came over and said he worked there. He talked with us about the problem and even looked under the car right then. He suggested coming in first thing in the morning and that Bob and Scott would surly help us out. Needless to say, I was worried about being taken advantage of, but based on the pleasant conversation we just had, I decided to give them a try... In the morning Bob took the car right in and told us to walk down the street and have breakfast and he would have Scott take a look at it and have an estimate for us right away. We finished breakfast and came back about 45 minutes later. The CAR WAS ALREADY FIXED! Scott had taken the front wheels off, inspected the brakes - which were fine, and while putting things back together Scott noticed that there was a piece of metal scraping, so he bent it back out of the way! They only charged me 1/2 hour labor (~$33) and we were able to continue our vacation without hassle! We vacation in Bar Harbor every January. Day before yesterday while in Ellsworth my alternator light started flickering when stopped and the gauge showed that the alternator was barely charging while driving. We were able to make it back to our B&B on Holland St in the pouring rain (a hair raising drive). I had been carrying a used alternator in our pickup for about a year and I usually do all my own work, but being on vacation I did not have the necessary tools or work clothes with me. Since we were staying next door to Bar Harbor Auto Repair, I asked them if they could replace the alternator with my part-something many repair shops don't want to do. They were extremely courteous, efficient and friendly and did the job in short order. They tested both the old and 'new' alternators while performing this job and their fee was extremely reasonable. When I arrived at Bar Harbor on a family vacation, my air conditioner blew out on a Friday. My hotel recommended Bar Harbor Auto Repair, so I gave it a shot. I could not be happier with the service I received. The owner first tried to put Freon in the system, but when that failed he showed me that the air conditioner compressor had broken. He recommended getting a part from a junk yard when I got home to save costs. When I told him I needed the air conditioner fixed for the drive home since my wife has Asthma, he immediately contacted a parts supplier and promised to fix my Jeep first thing on Monday morning. I dropped the Jeep off on Monday morning while I went on a boat ride with my family and by the time we got back it was fixed and for a very reasonable cost. This service center is a life savor. Do not hesitate to use it if you are on vacation and have a problem with your car. read more

Stopped in Bar Harbor for a mini vacation and on the way our a/c broke and the truck started making lots of noise. It's Friday night and nothing is open. We were given a phone book and picked out the Bar Harbor Auto Repair and Towing and called first thing Saturday morning hoping that someone would be there. Scott answered and we brought the truck right over. This man could not have been more professional and competent. There wasn't much he could do for our truck as we were leaving the next day and he couldn't get parts that fast. But, he went out of his way, to do what he could to get the truck moving again. I started using Bar Harbor Auto Repair because it was to close to where I work, and quickly became a fan. Unlike many other repair shops I have dealt with, quotes given include labor (which can be the biggest cost in a repair), and almost always it is quoted on the high side to prepare for possible complications that may cause a delay. Each and every time I pick up my car, the bill is either exactly as quoted or less, but to this point has NEVER been more. I have never had to return because a repair was not done correctly or completely. Joe and Scott are both personable and professional. As a woman, I appreciate that they speak to me as an intelligent being, and don't assume I haven't a clue about car mechanics. Last week I was in Bar Harbor on a work trip and while there, my "check engine light" was FLASHING. Texted my mechanic at home and he said if FLASHING, do NOT drive and just get it into a shop. My hotel suggested Bar Harbor Auto. Scott was just wonderful! Initially he told me he would probably only be able to run the diagnostic on my car and he was booking out til Tuesday. This was on a Wednesday and I needed to travel that day to another location. The car had a failed coil on one of the cylinders. On a recent vacation to Bar Harbor our vehicle's service light came on for the first time in 7 years of ownership - figures it would choose now in the middle of Acadia National Park and over 7 hours from home. We drove into town since there was not a dealer within 50 miles and found Bar Harbor Auto Stop. Scott reminded me of a mechanic I deal with at home and was honest and forthright about cost and the time it would take. He's young (30's) ambitious, more than fair, has excellent diagnostic skills, is informative, let's the customer know what's going on, if he makes suggestions, he explains if it is critical or not, and let's you decide; he's not pushy, makes you feel involved and important, and goes the "extra mile". Great place, very friendly and extremely helpful owner. We were only for the weekend in Maine and on our way there our car broke down. It was challenging to find a good place that works with new Audi, closest dealership was only in Bangor. I'm a technician myself and the owner allowed me to use all his tools, everything I needed to repair the car! And didn't charge anything for it, nothing at all!! He just helped us out! Was on a business trip in Bar Harbor when we discovered our Avis rental car was super low on oil. Given the lengthy days of rural driving we had ahead of us, we needed to get it changed before we left town. I called and spoke with Sean who got us an early appointment the next day. A short while after drop off we were on the road and we felt the pricing was very competitive and customer service was great! Scott the owner hooked it up. We are from over 12 hours away and had a battery issue that Road Side Assistance said would take over 2 hours to get us a jump. Bar Harbor Auto Repair was there in 10 minutes and had me up and running. I followed him back to the shop and he checked my alternator and diagnostics at no charge to make sure I was good to go.
