I'm almost glad this place has low ratings, because that means more space for me! I have gone to…read morethis place once a day while in Siena, and it is perfectly friendly and cozy. Good food, too. One problem with other places nearby is that there is nowhere to sit. For whatever reason many Italians swig their tiny coffees standing up, and then go about their day. Sitting around forever in a cafe isn't as much of a thing. This place has seating, and reasonably fast service although sometimes you have to flag down a waiter. Note if you're American, you get a table and then they come to you. You pay the bill at the end by taking it up to the register. There isn't counter service.

WOW! If you want to feel warm and welcomed then you must go visit Emma, at Bar 500. Her…read morerestaurant is in the heart of downtown Cortona and offers inside and outside seating. Her restaurant is quaint, charming, and cozy. Emma will treat you like one of her family. My wife and I found her one night while she was closing and asked if we could get dessert and coffee to go. She could have said "no" very easily but instead welcomed us and prepared two hot coffees with cookies and a tart to go. We liked her so much, we made reservations for dinner the next night before we walked out. OBTW, the coffee and desserts were fresh and tasty. Our dinner and service the next evening was great. Emma and her associate do everything. They seat you, hand out the menu, take your order, cook and serve you the food, and then bus the tables. All along the way, you get to talk with Emma. My wife and I had salads to begin our meal and then pasta dishes with ragu. Our meals were cooked fresh, served hot, and the portions were generous. If you looked around, all of her customers were laughing, smiling, and enjoying themselves. The prices were very reasonable considering her location. Emma has quite a selection of tasty and fresh desserts, especially the cookies with the chocolate strip. There are plenty of options in Cortona but if you want to feel like you are entering into someone's home, go visit Emma. You will not be disappointed. Don't forget to make that reservation because you will need it!

The presentation of the Tuscan dishes offered at Osteria Permalico, located on a steep hilly street…read morein Siena, was truly a step above, and the dark, romantic atmosphere and friendly service made this an even more memorable dining experience! My favorite dish by far was the ricotta gnocchi with hazelnut pesto, topped with a dried tomato paste. The gnocchi dumplings were unlike any other gnocchi I've had before--they were cut into a rectangular (rather than round) shape, and the pieces of dough were so soft, pillowy, and tender. But the best part was definitely the creamy, earthy hazelnut pesto, which was balanced out by the acidity of the dried tomato paste on top! Next, we had the Tonno del Chianti, which means "tuna of Chianti," but the dish was actually made of pulled pork in a marinade of sage oil and rosemary, and served at room temperature. Interestingly, the slightly chewy, fatty strips of pork looked a lot like pieces of canned tuna--hence the name of the dish! Finally, we had the beef meatballs served with an oregano-flavored mayonnaise. The deep-fried meatballs had a crispy texture and meaty flavor, and paired nicely with the unctuous, herbaceous mayo that was artistically smeared onto the plate. Overall, this was a fantastic restaurant with fine dining-level presentation, but I simply could not believe the amazingly low prices for all the different dishes!

I wish I had read the reviews before eating at La Favorita. Unfortunately, I discovered too late…read morethat many other customers have had terrible experiences here as well. I ordered a hamburger, and from the first bite it had a strong fish smell and taste. A hamburger should never smell like fish. I brought it to the staff's attention and sent it back, expecting at least an apology or an attempt to make things right. Instead, they did absolutely nothing. No replacement, no accommodation, no concern whatsoever. To make matters worse, the pricing feels deceptive. Their advertised combo meal (hamburger, fries, and a can of soda) costs €14. However, the hamburger that already comes with fries costs €9, and a can of soda costs €3.50, which totals only €12.50 if ordered separately. Apparently, you pay an extra €1.50 for the privilege of ordering the "combo." Make that make sense. "La Favorita" translates to "the favorite," but this place is nobody's favorite. If you're looking for a hamburger that tastes like fish, poor customer service, and confusing pricing, then you've found your spot. Siena has so many wonderful restaurants and places to eat. Do yourself a favor and choose literally almost anywhere else.
