Despite significant progress, queer spaces are as relevant today as ever. Here we meet each other, find acceptance and love often missing in our other contexts, and organize for change (e.g., Stonewall 1969). After the closing of Studio 69 several years ago, Brownsville has been without such a space. Enter Bar B in May 2021. Despite years of tough times in South Texas, the LGBTQ+ community will not back down. The bar tender, Z, welcomed us into the clean, welcoming space, with a black, granite counter top and lots of tall boy tables. The room was full of couples, friends talking, and a few singles seeking community. The bar is a lovely space, with a modern, industrial feel--not the tough, urine-smelling hovel you sometimes find in conservative, southern towns. It feels professional--another sign that times are changing here. The music is bumping, the service is attentive, the drinks are delicious, the bathrooms are clean. Come down and feel comfy kissing your boyfriend. Or kiss someone who might become one--at least for the night. Or be the friend you wish you'd hard during a time.
