I've already spied what I want from them next time - Steak Benedict with bread from Trove in Levenshulme! So if the waiting time for an Honest Crust pizza is too long to bear, these guys are definitely the next best thing. They are a bit behind the times with their handwritten menus on paper and not tweeting their soup of the day but the food more than makes up for it. They pretty much do everything that a sandwich shop would sell such as fruit, chocolate, milk, sandwiches, salad, jacket potatoes and other hot food. Everyday they have a different soup and a hot and cold food option which is different to the main menu. They are generally extremely busy and it isn't unusual to see the shop packed. Therefore do ring beforehand but not during lunch as they won't answer the phone! The reason why people flock here is the Shark Special. It has chicken, mushrooms, onions with a spicy mayonnaise on a toasted hoagie. It has to be tried! If you are on the tram, stop off at Brooklands and grab a shark special (named after the rugby club which used to train nearby).

I toyed with buying the hoisin duck wrap (a favourite of my wife's) then my mood drifted toward sliced salmon that looked so good but in the end it was the most simple sandwich choice of egg & onion on good brown bread. It was a generously filled, fresh, and satisfying sandwich and it's not often egg & onion is available these days. My other favourite sandwich filling has almost disappeared completely - prawn mayonnaise with lemon on shredded lettuce - so I make it at home now. Pret do make a crayfish sandwich but this wasn't available. So I took away - one duck wrap, one egg and onion, a coke light and a delicious flat white £11.83. We could have sat in as it's warm, cosy and a great ambiance. As I chatted with my server it turned out he paid more tax last year that Mr Trump which wouldn't be hard. We agreed he's just an alter noyef and a schmuck. Regrettably there are still no Pret stores in NI high streets. If there was I'd sign up to their £25 a month deal in a heartbeat.

The venue itself is gorgeous, with a craft market taking up half the building and a food hall in the other half. All the options at the food hall are great - you won't be disappointed. But the biggest issue we've always faced here is that it's so popular you can't always find a table. There's plenty of seating, it's just that the place is so popular it's always full which is frustrating if you've taken the trip to visit.

Poor experience in possibly a nice place…read more I went here for lunch before doing a bit of light charity shopping (which Altrincham is great for). We had a stroll up and down looking at local eateries on Regent road before deciding on Coco's. It's a classic old fashioned italian place in style. Packets of breadsticks on every table. Photos of Italian actors on the walls. A photo of Rome, I think, on the ceiling upstairs. A bit dated but pleasant to sit in. I ordered a Tuna Melt sandwich from the lunch menu and was pretty disappointed. The grease literally ran down my chin on more than one occasion as I was biting into it and the underneath looked like it had been dipped in oil it was so shiny. The side salad was fine. I also ordered a banoffee pie to split with one of the girls I was with. When it arrived it became obvious the cream on top had gone off as it smelt and tasted cheesy. Pretty gross but the pie underneath hadn't been great either. When we told our waiter (who I think was the manager) he was very surprised as he said they'd just been delivered the day before. He offered us a replacement dessert which was declined but he came back and offered us complementary tea and coffees which did improve things. I had the vanilla ice-cream that came with the pie and I thought for an Italian restaurant it was disappointing. I also noticed there was no lock on the door of the toilet I used and one of the sinks was out of order. So there's room for improvement here. However the other 3 girls I was with all enjoyed their meals - an omelette, a meatball sandwich and salmon with veg. So hopefully there is more to this place than my own experience, which is why I've given it an extra star.
