Dr. Hoover extracted three of my daughter's wisdom teeth in less than 20 minutes, and she only needed local anesthesia. The entire experience was much easier and less stressful than we expected. Before visiting Dr. Hoover's office, we consulted with another doctor in Costa Mesa. We were told that my daughter needed to have all four wisdom teeth removed and would need to undergo general anesthesia. They also performed a CT scan and, after reviewing it, told us that one of her wisdom teeth was very close to the nerve. They recommended extracting the tooth but leaving the root behind. We were not comfortable with that recommendation, so we decided to seek a second opinion from Dr. Hoover's office. I had a Delta Dental HMO plan but since it didn't cover anything, I was prepared to pay out of pocket for this. I was highly recommended to Dr. Owen by a fellow Yelper. I had already called 20 other places and checked on pricing and availability. Dr. Owen spoke to me on the phone and explained the entire procedure. He also gave me an estimate on pricing was also available to do the surgery in the time frame I needed so I decided to go to him. His office is clean and comfortable (not scary at all!) His staff were nicest people I have ever met! I went in for a consultation and they took my panoramic X-rays. All of their equipment was new and current with the technology. He gave me a really fair deal on my wisdom teeth, $1590, including local anesthesia and IV drip. Since my wisdom teeth were full bony impactions, it would be a difficult procedure. However, I was paying out of pocket for this so he was generous to let me pay $1590 instead of $1900. Dr. Owen and his staff carefully went over instructions on pre and post surgery care and gave me my prescription of Vicodin and antibiotics in advance to fill. He also gave me extra gauze for my mouth and gave me the option to keep my teeth! I decided to donate them to dental school instead. I returned for the surgery. He and his staff were very professional and treated me with the utmost care. After a long 3 hour surgery, they were able to take 4 wisdom teeth out of my tiny mouth! I was groggy after surgery and my boyfriend drove me home. The first 3 days, I iced with a bag of peas and then heated. I slept a lot, watched movies, drank a lot of protein shakes, smoothies, and kefir. I did not get a lot of swelling in my cheeks as I had thought. It was probably due to the post opt care instructions that I followed to a tee. It has been 9 days since my procedure and I have healed wonderfully! I returned for a follow-up appointment and Dr. Owen checked to see how everything was healing and gave me an irrigation tool. After 9 days, I can eat soft foods, bread, and my jaw is becoming less sore. I am very happy to have found a highly skilled oral surgeon since I have heard horror stories from my friends! From my initial intake meeting, getting my prescriptions and directives, going under, and the aftercare, he went above and beyond my high expectations. Dr. Yoshikane and his staff were personable, knowledgable, and easy to talk to from the start. I immediately felt comfortable during a very uneasy and fear induced and anxiety ridden time for me. I had previously gotten my first two wisdom teeth removed over thirty years ago, and the experience was so horrible that I had put off getting the last two out this long. Dr. Yoshikane answered all of my questions and explained the plan and extra plans in the event the first plans weren't working for me after the removal. After the procedure I was under constant watch and care by Dr. Yoshikane through phone messages with my husband. He contacted us for the first three days even going as far as to check on me at midnight the first day of the surgery. Seriously! My husband was impressed with the level of concern and questions that Dr. Yoshikane asked him, because it truly showed he cared about his patient's wellbeing, and wasn't just jumping through a hoop. I just left my after care appointment and everything is going great! My surgical areas are closed, the medications are all working in tandem without residual pain from the surgery. Went to OC Smiles on Friday 3/13/26 for a loose implant because my dentist is closed on Fridays…read more Helena was great and the only good thing i will have to say about my experience. I didn't need a diagnosis, since I told the dentist that my implant was loose. He decided to take a ct scan, charge me for it and charge me for his false "diagnosis." $290 later.. he told me I need a New crown and wanted me to pay $2900 to return for 2 more visits to "fix" it. I Declined his outrageous treatment plan, knowing my implant was just loose. I waited until Monday with no problems and went to my dentist Dr. John Vartanian (Newport Beach) who did the implant for me. He tightened the screw and I was out of there in 10 minutes for free. I believe SoCal Smiles owes me $290 back for their unnecessary scan and incorrect diagnosis. They were trying to sell me something I didn't need and I'm quite upset about how this was handled when I brought it to their attention. I would go elsewhere and not trust this place with your time or money.
