Love the location; halfway between stuff to do on the north vs south. Very close to the airport. Shopping and restaurants nearby. They have a tennis/pickle ball court, nice pool and shuffleboard. At face value, the unit was good. Spacious, clean, well-kept. But the devil is in the details. The air conditioner blows right in your face when you sit in the living room or lie in the bed. They should put some diverters or something. The overhead fan makes a constant ticking noise. You have to make sure everything is super clean or ants come.

Long shot of the pool. You can look out over the beach from here.

We ended up staying in an Airbnb at this location. This also doesn't look like a resort as the name implies. It is a condo complex with some owners choosing to rent out their units and others being full-time residents. Ours was a downstairs unit which made it handy for any loading and unloading of groceries and the like. We like condo life because we know it's just like at home you need to get your groceries and coffee and have them on hand. That's why the term resort in the name could be misleading but we knew what we were getting into so it's all good. This place has a large pool at BBQs there and one other location. Also, tennis courts and shuffleboard. I believe you can check the supplies for those at the front desk. There is no hot tub which I thought was fine but if that's important to you just know there is not one. The owners of our unit had it equipped with a washer/dryer and window a/c units which were appreciated. We had everything we needed and it was situated in a good central location to stores, Costco, Safeway, and Target. Also, a good location to get to the airport. All in all, although not fancy and a little dated. They were built in 1978 so they have been around a while. It's still a well-kept property and I would definitely stay here again.

Nice view from the balcony (lanai) facing Nawiliwili Park & Harbor

Stayed in Building L upstairs unit during November 2022. Room was a 2 story duplex unit with living and kitchen on the first floor (plus sofa bed) plus two separate bedrooms on the second floor. Neighbors were very quiet. Older building but seems well maintained and the owner of the unit we stayed in made noticeable updates inside. Convenient access to parking and only a short downhill walk to the Front Office. Shower and laundry unit on the 2nd floor with a toilet and sink on the 1st Floor. Location is convenient and very short walking distance of Nawiliwili Park and Harbor (where the cruise ships park), shops and restaurants. Duke Kauai is also a short walk via the beach. We saw many sunrises from the lanai. Big plus is location: not dealing with Kapaa traffic or a drive from Poipu. Hotel is 5 min drive to Downtown Lihue and 10 min from the Airport. Local owned restaurants, farmers markerts and food places like Tip Top, Mark's Place, and Kauai Bakery are also less than a 15 min drive away. Reserved via Booking.com but noticed price was similar at Banyan Harbor website. Good value considering for the same price you can only get a 500 sq. ft. room good for two people. I think the space was 1800 sq ft. Worked for a group of four comfortably. Hope the photos help! Would stay again.

The most convenient place to stay on the island! Comfortable, quiet, & very friendly staff. Kitchen & amenities were a huge plus. Minutes away from the airport and grocery stores like Costco, Safeway, Target, ABC store etc. Walking distance from the most low key beach. Dukes is right on the beach as well.

Ask the Community - Banyan Harbor Resort

    Do they have a gym?

I don't believe they do. I don't remember reading up on that. There's a swimming pool. I was there last October for a few days:)

    Do they have AC?

It depends on the homeowner. Each of these units are individually owned. Most of the a/c units are window air conditioning.

    Do they charge for parking?

No; not for guests of resort

We called the front desk and they sent someone up right away and they mopped the entire unit. The floor was still sticky even after the thorough mop. Being too tired to deal with it, we just put on our socks and "lived with it the first night". What followed after is what really impressed me. The following morning, we got a call to check in to see if everything was ok, and if there was anything they could do for us. I brought up the floor again, and immediately someone was in our room to "assess" the situation. They then asked if it would be ok if someone could come in a buff the floor. We were headed to the pool so we accepted. When we came back, the floor was 100% better and the staff continued to call and check on us, follow up and make sure that our stay was going well. This is the kind of customer service that really impresses and made the rest of stay amazing! Besides the floor situation, this hotel was amazing. Our family had the best time here! It's a smaller and more quiet property than the large Marriott on the property, which was just our speed. The pool was well maintained with the best view of the cliffs and ocean. Our room had the most spectacular view! We had breakfast on the large lanai every morning. I loved that the glass "wall" opened up entirely to the lanai so that it felt as if we had an "outdoor" living room. We took full advantage of the on property activities that they offer throughout the day when we could, such as pond fishing, fabric flower making and smoothies. The staff were all very friendly, warm, helpful and personable. parking was a breeze. This was one of the most relaxing vacations we have had and can't wait to come back!

There is no shuttle service between the two. The defining characteristic landmarks are the man-made lagoons that are visible from the complex. My wife and I spent a couple of hours in the area, many pedestrian bridges letting you walk back and forth over the waterways. There is a small island with greenery and picnic tables close by. There were many Muscovy ducks inhabiting the area, along with two pokemon gyms that we spent time around.

We got to make use of their restaurants and giant pool, and enjoyed it. Founded in 1937, Sonesta International Hotels experienced rapid growth after purchasing the Red Lion Hotel Corporation in 2021. expanding from 80 properties to over 1,200. It's high end brand is Royal Sonesta (first one opened in 1969 in New Orleans). This location in Kauai was rebranded (previously Kauai Marriott Resort) as a Royal Sonesta in 2021, during the same time as its rapid expansion. Since the whole resort used to be branded as Marriott previously, most things in the complex are shared. We were provided a rubber wrist band that identified as us being able to use the Sonesta facilities. This included the pool. It is the largest single story outdoor pool not only Kauai but all of Hawaii at 26,000 square feet, with a flower shaped lagoon pool, all 4 feet in depth. There are 5 separate hot tubs, with most of them empty during the afternoon. The pool overlooks the Pacific Ocean with Kalapaki beach in the forefront. There is a manned towel station where one can pick up towels for use on both the pool area and the nearby beach, needing your room key and wristband. With all of this in place, spending a cloudy afternoon in the pool area was definitely worth a part of our vacation. Note that vacation club owners can set-up a house account with the Sonesta front desk, to allow charges for restaurants and shops. The entire complex is cash-less, meaning that one must credit cards if an account is not set-up.

To get the few negatives out of the way: The security team at the pool was borderline harassing us on days there was a ship in port looking for freeloaders and alcohol not purchased from the bar. My family and my wife's parents had stayed at this hotel more than twenty years ago and really enjoyed it, so my wife and I took the opportunity in April 2026 to make a return visit, staying for 6 nights at 1,350 points for a Parlor room (basically a hotel room with a Murphy bed...max 2 people)...plus a mandatory daily Hawaiian 'Villa tax' of $15.22. We really enjoyed our visit to the 'Garden Isle'. Back then, the hotel portion of the complex was a high end Marriott hotel. In 2021, the owners rebranded it to become the Royal Sonesta, which created a bit of confusion for me. What's important is that they are two separate entities, but letting guests/owners share things like the pool, lounge chairs on the beach, and fitness center. However owners can not charge anything to their room, instead having to create a separate Sonesta account to do so. Two things that jumped out were that the two large surface self-parking lots (complementary for owners) are quite a distance from the lobby entrance. And the check-in lobby for the vacation club itself is on the beach side of this large complex. In between is a beautiful and very large garden, with a koi pond and various retail shops. There is a large sundry shop, selling essentials along with snacks and food for comparable prices to other stores nearby. There is a free shuttle to the nearby airport, though we didn't take it since we had a rental car. So it is possible to not use a rental car, since there are two shopping centers within walking distance, along with multiple restaurants on the resort grounds itself. We stayed in a parlor (studio-style) room, and it was fine for the two of us. The bathroom was actually small for a hotel, with the walk-in shower being good with OK shower pressure but not really hot water. There is a kitchenette (full size sink, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster, full set of flatware, glasses, mugs, pitcher for water, colander, tupperware for leftovers, blender). Also an apartment-size refrigerator with a usable freezer that kept our ice cream frozen. There are gas grills outside, which I noticed were daily cleaned by housekeeping. The room had a queen murphy bed, with a OK mattress. When hidden, the space is used as a couch. We found it much easier just to keep it down throughout our stay, since we were able to find space to put away the couch cushions out of the way...though a survival key became a way to minimize the number of bad toe stubs on the corners. Housekeeping comes at the end of your stay, though a cleaning can be added at additional cost. Garbage can be thrown out in nearby bins in the hallways. Self-service laundry is separate from the units, and was not even in our tower, but in an adjoining one. There is a small cost associated with it. It had a nice TV with a lot of basic cable channels (HGTV!) along with 3 Showtime channels. It's an older room so electrical outlets were at a premium, but they had put power strips behind the bed so was able to connect my machines next to my side of the bed without need for an extension cord. The private lanai had seating for two and a great unobstructed view of the ocean and beach (worth the upgrade to an ocean view). It's one of the best parts of the unit. We saw the NCL Pride of America come into the nearby Nilliwilli cruise port and stay for 2 days (Thursday and Friday). Important to note since the area gets a lot busier when the cruise ship is in town. The fitness center was good. Cardio equipment was older but in good shape. Had plenty of towels, but only had one disinfecting wipe dispenser, which was sometimes out. Huge yoga room with mats and equipment. Had a filtered water dispenser. The rooms were not created as a fitness center, but still had decent ventilation. The owners lounge is nice, with free use of a foosball table and a working air hockey table. It had working outlets and air conditioning so hung out there in the afternoon after checkout since our flight was at night. In terms of resort activities, it's pretty limited during the shoulder-season when we came. Staff interaction was OK, though in the beginning, the pushing of timeshare presentations ("500 points if you sign up!") by the concierges were prevalent.

Ambiance is like an old school dinner that's frequently packed with locals and guests 5 stars!!

As someone who's never been to Kauai, I'll say the one spot/food that was repeatedly recommended by…read morelocals was tip top's oxtail soup. Like brah, it kept coming up whenever anyone would list their favorites. So you know your boy had to check em out. The setting is def unique hahaha. It's a lil restaurant on the first floor of a motel? Also, check their hours and days bc they're at least closed on mondays and I think close at like 130 every day. Now what you see is their half-size portion of oxtail. I think I paid $25-30 after tax and tip. Something like that. But brah, even after a sunrise hike, my big back struggled to finish allll that. The taste was definitely solid. I will say I've had better oxtail soup in Oahu, even from Liliha. BUT no complaints, I'm glad I tried out tip top's! It was obviously a local favorite as the entire place was packed with straight up locals--don't think I saw one tourist in there.

Funny . . . Carol became spoiled after staying with me at such a wonderful vacation retreat! No wonder Carol wanted to experience more quiet solitude verses staying in the dorm rooms at Kauai International Hostel! Besides, the Kauai International Hostel was booked solid, so Carol had no choice but to stay at this little hotel on Rice Street. The room Carol rented had a very small room: bed, a very tiny bathroom, microwave, and a little refrigerator-that's all. Heading towards Lihue, no less than a block away from Motel Lani is a dynamite Chinese restaurant that Carol and I had the pleasure enjoying their fabulous chinese cuisine. Motel Lani is conveniently located close to the US Post Office, grocery store, about 1 1/2 miles from the Nawiliwili Beach where Duke's is located and two miles from the Lihue Mall Shopping Center where Costco is located.

The price was half of any other, the owner is awesome. Extremely knowledgable about the Hawaiian culture and area. Had smile and story every morning. "Dwayne" The room is well maintained fresh paint, AC "very important," big clean bathroom, queen sized bed, dresser, desk, closet, fridge. No TV no problem, your in Kauai!! Five minutes away from Walmart and Costco. Great food and brewery a cross the street. Would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a cheep place to sleep at night.
