We had a great time staying in the bamboo suite, it was very comfortable. We very much enjoyed Wranglers Steakhouse which is just a stone throw away and greatly appreciate the complimentary drinks after our room was not cleaned when we arrived but we left for the day and it was beautifully cleaned when we came back after a long day of walking the beach. We snorkled at Poipu which is a beautiful scenic 25-30 min drive and saw incredible fish, turtles and monk seals and the complimentary beach chairs and towels were wonderful from the hosts. The Historic Inn Waimea is a great and convenient two-story place to stay at if you are planning to do activities in and around West Kaua'i (instead of having to come all the way from Lihu'e or even the South Coast). Four suites in the house overall, and it's right across the street from the Big Save Supermarket and several restaurants, plus within walking distance to other eateries and points of interest. Plus, next door to the beach. I stayed in the Hibiscus Suite and it was a great value overall and very clean. One bedroom, one bathroom, and then the living room with a mini-refrigerator, a sofa, two soft chairs and a TV (which I did not use the majority of the time I was there because I was out and about during the 2 days/nights). There is on-site parking available and also out in front right off the road. To check-in, you will want to go to the West Kauai Lodging offices located at 9600 Kaumualii HWY #MC2, Waimea, HI 96796. It's right next door to the only traffic light in Waimea Town. They will give you the keys to get into the main entrance and then into your room. For security reasons, they want you to lock the bolt every time you go in and out. If I stay in West Kauai, I would certainly consider staying here again! read more

HAWAII 2020 ADVENTURES #9: DATED VS HISTORIC Both words refer to time. The first word means out of place while the second word means a significant importance. How does an old place still be relevant? I'll use an example of one of my favorite underrated casino and hotel in Las Vegas - the Flamingo. There's something unique and timely about the Flamingo. It was the second casino to be built and open on The Strip. This hotel was featured in the original "Ocean's 11" but out of the five hotels from that movie only the Flamingo remains open. Why? It's because it had to adjust to the needs of its customers. This is why Inn Waimea is still relevant today. I choose this place for my stay in Kauai after reading the SF Gate article "Islands' small towns are rich in Old Hawaii". Inn Waimea was the only place I considered staying in Kauai as I wanted to be in Waimea. When I arrived at this place (exactly one week before Thanksgiving) I liked the charm of the inn. In fact the first to greet me were the wild chickens and roosters. There are four suites inside this inn. I stayed in the Bamboo Suite where I would get an view of the ocean (you don't get a great view due to the leaves of the trees). The Bamboo Suite is spacious enough for a single or a couple. Besides the bedroom there is a living room that includes a couch and TV. This house is historic as it was built in 1937. However when you go inside the furniture is modern. There's a cozy feel when you enter the inn. It is not overrun or overcrowded by visitors. Location makes a huge different where you plan to stay. As this inn is located in a residential area you feel you're staying inside a home. Next to this inn is Waimea Beach with its muddy waters isn't a great place to swim however if you want to take a stroll on the beach it provides serenity. Yet with Inn Waimea you are walking distance to eateries. In addition if you need to go grocery shopping the Ishirara Market is about a little over than a block away. I'm not close to an expert when visiting Hawaii however I've been to 3 islands. Out of the 3 I visited Kauai is the most remote island. With that remoteness comes peace and quiet. After all the sightseeing you do each day at Kauai why not stay at a place to unwind like Inn Waimea. read more

The Inn at Waimea was everything I expected and wanted. An old boarding house that has been renovated and turned into a multi room rental haven....away from the hustle and bustle of the busy, more ritzy resorts. If you're looking for a Hilton type of hotel, go stay at the Hilton. If you are looking for a place that feels like home with the basic home amenities, this is the place for you. Private, clean room with private bathroom and small living room that has a sofa, small fridge, coffee pot and a few utensils and dishes. We had an amazing stay and the check in and check out was a breeze! We will definitely be staying here again!! We love Waimea Inn!!! read more

This was a terrible experience. My husband and I could not find the property. We finally found the check in, and a key was left for us, but we could not find the property. We thought we had booked the Waimea Cottages. Once we asked a local where it might be, he directed it to it. We figured out how to open the door to the "sitting room" and the apt. was off to the left inside the "Inn." We opened the door and a window a/c was on, but the room was very warm. There were homeless people roaming around outside and the road to the beach was piled with dried vegetation, so I don't know how anyone could walk to the beach from there. We had to cancel and fortunately found a hotel in Poipu. The area is so run down. I suppose if you want a relatively inexpensive place to put your head down at night on your way to hiking, it might be ok, but I suggest you check out the area first so see if you feel comfortable and safe there. read more

The reason to stay at Inn Waimea is the location. We were looking to do hiking in Kokee State Park and the Waimea Canyon, and there were very few options for lodging in Waimea. Therefore, because we really wanted to stay nearby, this place worked for us, but the inn itself is quite old and could use some improvements. We stayed in the banana room, and probably the most disappointing part of our room was the shower. The room has a jacuzzi, but it looked old, chipped, and discolored enough that I wouldn't sit in it for a bath. The water pressure in the shower was so low that I had to stand right against the wall, on the sloped part of the tub, and lean back toward the wall to be under the stream of water to wash my hair. It was rather uncomfortable. Another annoying thing that my husband discovered was that the power cord on the coffee pot wasn't long enough to reach the outlet when the coffee pot was on the table. On the plus side, though, the window air conditioner worked! And there are also stores and restaurants within walking distance. So overall, this place met our needs for a few nights, and if your top priority is being near the state parks and you're willing to put up with the lower level of comfort, Inn Waimea will work for you. However, if you want a nice place to relax and enjoy your vacation, there are much nicer places on other parts of Kauai for a similar price. read more

We stayed in the Hibiscus Suite and it was a good value. I thought it would be noisy since it's an old house but I never heard a peep. There's a mini fridge in the suite and there's access to a microwave and grill. The Big Save across the street has really good poke. read more

We stayed in the banana room, the jacuzzi was large and very nice to relax in after a long day at the beach. The building is older but very well maintained and the furnishing inside our room looked modern. Service desk was nice as well. The directions to get to the banana room aren't very clear. Once you go through the front entrance there are a set of doors directly to your left with the letter 1 on them. Open these with your room key, the banana room is inside this room. We were worried we were opening someone else's room, luckily this was not the case. read more

A very quaint sweet inn, a two-story home once belonging to a Waimea pastor. This is a four suite inn and is as the website states, very close to the ocean, so much so that you can hear the waves pounding on the shore. Just a note that the ocean is a house and beach away -- but it is a very dangerous break and the waters are brown and murky. The best this beach can provide is a spot to watch the horizon and feel the cool breeze and sun's rays. The inn is at the entrance of Waimea from Kalaheo and within walking distance to the Ishihara Market and Big Save an and JoJo's Famous Shave Ice and the Shrimp Station. We also had eyes on Yumi's and Da Imu Hut but weren't able to eat these local eateries. We stayed for about 3-nights in the Banana Suite and we never saw a soul the whole time we were there, not even the owner. The Banana Suite itself was about three rooms separated from the rest of the first floor. The first room is a sitting room with a rattan couch and a large table which the tv, coffee pot and phone rested on (I was so happy that the tv was not in the bedroom!). This room connected to the bedroom, separated by a door. The bedroom had a small vintage vanity table, a wooden stand for clothes and a king sized bed. The bed was huge but unfortunately a bit uncomfy, we called after the first night to see if we could change rooms to find a more comfy bed but the owner insisted that the inn was full for the weekend. No matter, we still were somewhat happy with the room and willing to forgo sleep. The sheets were another matter, they were thin from wear with holes. The bathroom and jacuzzi tub were delightful and we decided to use it only one-night so as to conserve water. Very worth the price of the room to spend a couple of hours soaking, making a bubble bath and doing ahem, other stuff. Wi-Fi was a great free perk to the place and Lorraine, the owner, leaves out Kauai coffee and little cookies (make sure they're fresh next time please), and the refrigerator was stocked with pineapple juice and water. No AC all you people with rabbit metabolisms (like my hubby). The fan over the bed was most appreciated as we always walked into a humid room after a few hours out and about. All in in all I'd say the stay here was worth it to be in Waimea town and not in the bustling hub-bub of a resort area. The cost compared to a hotel or resort spot was a breath of fresh air. Kauai is expensive so if you're out all day why spend an arm and a leg for the niceties of a hotel. The neighbors are very nice and they greeted us and talked story. You can tell Lorraine probably respects the neighbors and kamaaina in the way that they greeted us. read more

Inn Waimea is by no means fancy, but has very clean and very affordable spacious rooms, and it is centrally located to shopping and food. I like that you are provided with both a sleeping area and a sitting room and there is free WiFi. The manager, Lorraine, is friendly and very low key. We decided to spend a few nights in Waimea to see Waimea Canyon and do some hiking in Koke'e State Park and it was worth it. Waimea is a small town and off the beaten path, but it's ideal if you want to get up early to hike or see the canyon (which was often fogged in by 11am during out stay). If you stay in town, you should definitely check out Salt Pond beach. I also recommend getting a bagel from Super Duper Two weekday mornings and some of their ice cream in the afternoon. And do not miss the amazing poke at Ishihara Market. The only drawback of Waimea is the noisy roosters. Do yourself a favor and bring some earplugs if you are a light sleeper. read more

This historic building is a gem to stay in. Love that this family business is making the best use of this place. Enjoyed the Taro Room - lots of space, huge shower, all clean and comfortable King bed. Ceiling fan was a dream. Appreciated the vicinity to the beach, sports bar, restaurant and grocery store. DO NOT STAY HERE! I informed the woman who answers the phone that I would not be in until after 8pm - she told me the name of my room and said that the door would be unlocked for me. When I arrived, my room was locked. I called every number I had for the house (it is not a hotel, it's a house), but nobody answered. I ended up having to sleep in my CAR, which was freezing at night, and extremely uncomfortable. I called the woman over 20 times requesting a refund and she just never refunded me the $120 (lots of fees) that I had spent on a room. Detestable customers service, management, and leadership. Horrible location in a sketchy area as well. Don't risk it! read more

The location is very close to the beach and it's also walkable to the popular eating joints. I can't speak for the other suites, but the Banana Suite was just okay. The pictures make it look much nicer and grander than it really is, but I suppose, that's true for any hotel advertising their rooms. The room could really use a modern update with a fresh coat of paint. I realize it's a historic building, but that doesn't mean that the ceiling should be cracking above the bed and the floor tiles should be yellowing. The entrance to the suite is in the lobby, so I didn't get a sense of privacy. However, both receptionists were very nice and personable. The Inn provides free beach towels, beach chairs, and mats, so that was very convenient. Overall, it's a pleasant enough place to stay. It wasn't my cup of tea, but perhaps it could be yours. read more

Really enjoyed our short stay at Inn Waimea. The owner was really friendly and the room was clean and spacious. It is steps from the beach and we could hear the ocean from our room. Be prepared for an early rooster wake-up call. Made for an easy trip to Waimea Canyon in the morning. Had beer and poke on the beach at night. Great granola store nearby for the morning. read more

We spent two nights here and enjoyed it immensely. A block or so from the beach and a block from good food and nice access to Waimea Canyon make this a great sleep. The homey atmosphere and friendly owner/staff were just one of the perks. The price was right too! read more

Historic beach house that has been converted to a small inn. Still has many of its original architectural details. Like visiting your family's cottage with old charm. I had a two room suite. Great value and location. Half block to the beach and half block to the main drag. Off street parking provided. Clean and quiet. read more
