We had an amazing lunch at Bangkok West. We visited while driving on the way from NorCal to LA. The interior of the restaurant and small garden are beautiful and transport you to Thailand. The service is warm and friendly and the food was all delicious. We started with the salad which had fresh shrimp and chicken, followed by the seafood coconut milk soup with perfect flavoring. We also got the pineapple fried rice, tofu pad see ew, salmon and duck - every dish had a generous amount of veggies and protein. The food here is awesome. There are multiple Thai places in the Soquel/Santa Cruz area but this is one of my favorites. Today I got pad Thai, curry rice, basil beef, crab rangoons, and spring rolls. Came here for the first time and it was SO good. The atmosphere and decor is so cute and feels very authentic. The staff is pretty friendly but we did feel rushed at the end of our meal even though they weren't closing up yet and there were a couple other couples inside. The shrimp suits were SO good and the yellow curry had a great flavor as well and two whole chicken breasts. It was a lot of meat. I just wish they had more sauce so it doesn't get dry. You also have to purchase extra rice because even though both of our entrees came with rice, they "combined" it but did so by only giving us one small plate of rice. Location: 3 stars It is a large area right off the freeway with lots of parking, but it's a windy street to get to it and you still have to drive around the building to get to the front. It's not a big deal, but it can be confusing the first time you go. Ambiance: 5 stars Garden in the front is cool. The interior decor reminds me of actual temples in Thailand with all the gold! Service: mixed Sometimes I'll get someone who avoids eye contact and hurries past our table without saying a word, like she doesn't want to be bothered. And sometimes we get someone who smiles, fills our water glasses, and tells us to have a nice meal. It's a toss up. Price: 3 stars This is where it's hard for me because overall, I like this restaurant and know costs of goods have increased, but the prices still seem a little steep. There are also several places on the menu where there are additional cost, from choosing BEEF as your dish protein to adding rice because you can't eat beef and broccoli without rice! Amazing food and service! The decor of the restaurant with the music and running water made for a pleasant dining experience. We ordered fried shrimp appetizer (#4), egg rolls (#2), pork fried rice, chicken pad Thai, and duck curry. I think my favorite was the pork fried rice. Such amazing flavors!!! The curry tasted great as well and the Pad Thai was exactly the flavors I was expecting. The service was so warm and inviting! Very friendly staff that checked on us a few times to make sure every thing was good. The food came out very fast as well, despite them being very busy with tables, a to-go order, and a rude customer that was complaining things were taking too long. They apologized to him multiple times, but he was just one of those people that like to complain. We had zero issues. And I never give 5 stars, but they deserve it for sure. I have eaten Thai food all over the world, and I can confidently say that Bangkok West in Aptos is hands down the best Thai restaurant on the planet--(outside of Thailand obvi)! They're best known for their green curry and pineapple fried rice, and both are wonderful, but I also love their Tom Kha Gai, yellow curry, and anything with shrimp--it's always fresh and perfectly cooked, and of course Thai Iced Tea. If you're new to Bangkok West, start with the Bangkok West Combination appetizer sampler. It's perfect to share. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself is a hidden gem. I really like Bangkok West- my go to is the Authentic Spicy Thai Fried Rice with Chicken. The service is fast and the employees are extremely friendly. I always get it Hot Spicy! However, the last two times I've ordered it there hasn't been any spiciness to the dish. I thought the first time it was a mistake but twice in a row and now I'm wondering if they have a new chef that doesn't know what they're doing. It used to bring a good amount of heat so it's really disappointing! I'm thinking I'll take a long break and see if it corrects itself because if it happens a 3rd time, I'm done going back. This is a must pit stop every time I'm in the area, I've been eating here since 2000. Some plates have changed to accommodate the local pallet, i prefer the old fashion menu that was more aromatic, apparently people complain about cilantro and other herbs in the spring rolls so they make them pretty bland and basic, this was a 2 out of 10 for me, I only ate one piece. I asked why they didn't have all the yummy veggies anymore, and I was told that too many people complained about them lol. So next time I was advised to request my rolls fully loaded. I ordered the green pan nang curry lunch special, my son ordered the curry rice with veggies and tofu and his girlfriend got the sweet n sour tofu with veggies combo. Everything was excellent! We didn't wait long for food after our order was in, which was perfect because we were hungry. Delicious and solid Thai food!The spicy eggplant and tofu was not spicy as noted on the menu but it was, as everything else, still tasty. We were surrounded by locals, judging by staff's familiarity with other diners coming in after us. We'd later get side eye from another couple who we guessed are regulars that were not happy to find "their" booth occupied and had to settle for another table closer to the door. Chicken satay was a decent portion, tasty and tender. Shrimp, veggie rolls and wantons were also decent. * Salmon Green Curry Special - Salmon and veggies in a green curry sauce, with side of jasmine rice and salad. Was extremely disappointing. Salmon was dry and slightly fishy. Likely (over) cooked from frozen. Very little green curry sauce, and what was included was watered down and lacked any authentic Thai Green Curry taste. Possibly the worst I've ever had. Not recommended. (Could have done better at home with a good Thai Curry Paste and some fresh salmon from the local store.) How on earth does a small place like Aptos have such an incredibly delicious Thai restaurant? Those nearby in Santa Cruz don't carry a baht to the how great the Bangkok West experience can be. My friends and I came here after work one night after my coworker recommended this restaurant. She explained that the atmosphere and overall ambiance is very "Thai." When we got to the restaurant, we could see why. The entire place is adorned with gold mirrors and Thai architecture including mini wats inside and out. If the food wasn't good, I knew that the restaurant decor itself would get a tasteful 5-stars from me. When we first arrived, a small table wasn't ready for us yet so the servers asked us to wait. They joked about how the "couple" was still sitting at "our" table, which made us chuckle. We didn't have to wait long before they left, our table got bussed, and we were seated. Fortunately, the food was also on par with the decor in meeting my expectations. We split four main dishes between the three of us, each being brought out one after the other: * Tom Yum Hot Pot - a great way to start the meal. This classic Thai soup was everything and more, and the hot pot contained a middle open flame that kept the soup piping hot. I know it's a fairly simple soup to make but I was impressed. * Beef Larb - a fantastic, tangy beef salad with all the right ingredients. Their version comes with lettuce wraps. Highly recommend this dish. * Pork Pad See-Ew - always a classic at any Thai restaurant and the wok they used to stir fry these noodles was 100% on point. Great flavor in the noodles and good amount of broccoli and meat. * Penang Curry w/ Chicken - Very tasty and good curry overall. I just wish there was more of it since we had so much rice leftover at the end of our meal. Our entire meal was delicious, the setting was fantastic, and the service was on point.
