First things first - a bit on the pricey side BUT their artist are pretty darn good. Came here to support a friend getting a tat - was recommended by a friend. You can find them on instagram and the work speaks for it self. Love their spot - such a cool modern decor not the usual dungeon of old school spots - but then again it all depends what your mood is when getting tats some people like to hear heavy metal in the background and some of us prefer to hear today's hits. WELL DONE Ba Neul.
I've been following MJ for a while before I finally decided to get my first tattoo. Her linework is beautiful and precise and exactly the style I love, so it was a no-brainer that I would go to her for my first one! I explained to her my vision and she was super accommodating in breathing it into life. While flowers are sort of a "basic" tattoo, she made it unique and amazing and since it's so meaningful to me, I'll gladly wear it for the rest of my life! The tattoo process was great too. She was always reassuring me even when it felt like it was too much and she took her time to make it detailed and incredible! I know I'm definitely going back to her for another tattoo because it's worth the money.
Update 2 weeks later: Blowouts all over this tattoo, so I guess Taipei style "going deeper" means it involves applying tattoos incorrectly. Love that the shop hasn't responded and that Yub continues to tattoo there! Here's a list of excellent shops/artists to go to in New York where you'll have a wonderful experience!! Listed from cheapest to most expensive: @honeypokes - lgbtq friendly shop, adorable flash pieces @sydoodle_ - lgbtq friendly, lovely to talk to @hillary_blair - beautiful work, fair prices, private studio! @chen_tatt - she goes between LA and NYC, but if you can catch her while she's here, she's amazing! Super fast worker. You're in and out before the adrenaline stops flowing! Also an adorable person. Gristle tattoo - never had a bad experience! I've had multiple tattoos from @swamplost and she's amazing! Also had great work done by @juliannamenna but she's always booked and has very few slots available. If you can get in, do it! @limbforest - beautiful work and wonderful experience! Lvrs & Klrs - always a wonderful experience. See @nicotattoo.nyc for gorgeous thin line work or @ele.nyc for fantastic stylized black work East River Tattoo- all female shop, see Alissa! She does amazing Russian woodcut inspired work and treats you well! 10 Thousand Foxes - @Krishtattoo will change your life! The best neotrad I've ever seen and they are so kind and friendly. Tenderfoot - expensive but amazing artists and great experiences. I've seen @ruthcallawaytattoo @freeorgy and @jettaturas and gotten *amazing* work from all three!
They just posted on their IG that they have to close down their shop due to a possible exposure. This is the reason why I did not take my chances to travel to NYC. Their staff responded to my review on Google and was explaining how they couldn't make an exception just for me. However, I wasn't only asking for myself, BaNeul should not have put their customers at risk and forfeit their deposits if they do not feel safe to return during the pandemic. I understand business is tough during this time and everyone is struggling with the new normal, but this shouldn't be the way how a business operates.
I got two tattoos within 5 months of each other at BaNeul (Oct 2019 and Feb 2020). I love this studio and the fine line work of the tattoo artists. These were my 4th and 5th tattoos. My first floral band was an original design by MJ and it is gorgeous and she accomplished the exact kind of watercolor coloring that I wanted. My second tattoo of ginkgo leaves was an original design by Soohee and I barely felt it and the lines are so soft and subtle. I absolutely love both of my tattoos. Both MJ and Soohee listened to the general idea of what I wanted, and both came up with gorgeous designs. They then took those designs and tattooed the outlines - but the most amazing part is the creativity of their shading. The shop is beautiful with lots of plants and warmness. They take good care of you while you're there, with an initial design consultation, plus a great little kit with aftercare instructions. And they'll send you the photos they take so you have some nice photos too! They are located in prime real estate in Greenwich/West Village so their prices reflect both the cost of doing business in Manhattan, and ensure the artists (hopefully) make a liveable wage. They price based on job, not by the hour, but based on my two tattoos, it averaged to about $500/hour. A bit expensive, but it's a lifetime investment in high quality art. I still lust after all their work on Instagram. I wish I could afford to get a tattoo from each artist there because they all have great skill and style. Photo credits go to the tattoo artists themselves.
I had a great experience! I got a Friday the 13th flash tattoo by @heeyatattoo (SooHee Jin) and it came out great! Her instagram is a great place to look at her work, and her attention to detail is amazing. It is clear that everybody working there has had a lot is experience and are very professional. My tattoo healed perfectly and I would gladly get all my tattoos from Ba Neul!
As yelp example states: Meh. I've experienced better. And for way less pain and money!! The tattoo is pretty but not really worth the $1800 I was charged for two one-hour sessions (perhaps would've been less paintful if MJ didn't rush through? Not sure why an upper thigh tattoo would hurt exponentially more than an armpit...then again I've never had bruising from any tattoos before or since either!) I chalked the price up to me not finalizing the design until the appointment but also found email communication subpar and confusing. Even when I asked for a bolder line of color as she was finishing up the second session - so it would stand out on top of the b/w design from the first session (seeing in the red of the second pic)- I got a lot of pushback. Honestly didn't feel comfortable coming back for touch-ups. I'll just get somewhere else to make it what I want. BTW this was my 5th our of 7 tattoos. Yes I got TWO tattoos after this, which was why I felt the need to review such subpar work for that kinda $$$. I know its not customary to review a tattoo shop so low, but I came across a friend of a friend who had also gone to MJ and was overcharged and underimpressed as well, so I feel the need to put it out there. Take it as you will fellow Yelpers! Ink on~
BaNeul Tattoo seemed like a fairly clean place with really good plant vibes. The staff was nice and the artists are talented. Unfortunately for me I had a different experience - this would be my twelfth tattoo, so I am no rookie. After getting my whole forearm tattooed, I contracted Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (or MRSA) a strain of staphylococcus aureus, which is quite dangerous and painful. I got my security deposit back because I wasn't going to finish my tattoo there but I spent $1,500 for a scarred tattoo. This place is not as sanitized as it appears. Please make sure you read about MRSA before getting your tattoo at BaNeul.
MJ is so sweet and was so creative with my tattoo. I had a design idea and she truly brought it to life. Everything healed properly and she followed up to ask how it looked. She's personable and kind with her clients! Everyone in the shop is so friendly as well. :)
I found MJ through Instagram and was coming to NYC for a family trip I wanted to get this tattoo done for awhile now. MJ just opened her own shop and it's amazing, staff is friendly, and it is so clean and bright inside. I emailed her staff to ask if there were any openings the week of my quick visit to NYC and surprisingly they said yes! I came into the shop and was greeted immediately. MJ drew up my tattoo and had me look it over to make any edits I so forth thought would be needed and was a great person to work with. She made my idea into a reality and it turned out even better than what I would have imagined! It was a little pricey but I love it, definitely worth it. I already received so many compliments and it's only been a day! She also gives you an aftercare packet which includes all the instructions needed, business card, a few stickers, and some ointment for your new tattoo. Thanks MJ and Baneul staff:)
Very nice tattoo!! Like this neat style so much!!! MJ's professional skill and aesthetic impressed me a lot.
Wonderful experience--I got my first custom tattoo by Hide and he was amazing. He understood what I wanted and made adjustments to the artwork until I was completely satisfied. The tattoo turned out gorgeous and I love it so so much. This place is definitely worth it for the experience and quality of art.
MJ is a passionate tattoo artist. She has excellent artisan judgment and able to give you the best tattoo. I have two tattoos from her and I am 100% satisfied! She is good at fine line and colored tattoo. You can find lots of details in her design and tattoo.

I've gotten three tattoos from MJ at BaNeul Tattoo, and I can confidently say she is incredible at what she does. Her attention to detail is next level--every piece has so much precision and depth, and you can really see the care she puts into her designs. What stands out the most is how she balances speed with skill. She works efficiently, but never sacrifices quality. Each tattoo has come out clean, detailed, and exactly how I envisioned (if not better). On top of that, the overall experience is always smooth and comfortable. MJ is professional, talented, and truly passionate about her craft. If you're looking for detailed, high-quality work from someone who knows exactly what they're doing, I highly recommend MJ. I'll definitely be going back again. read more
*** 5,300th review *** I had spent years figuring out what and where to put a tattoo. Once I figured it out, I then spent months finding an artist whose portfolio "spoke to me." Once I found MJ, I knew it was she! It was easy to schedule an initial consult over email. I had sent some examples ahead of time, but we ended up talking a lot since I seemed drawn to a lot of different styles or subjects. Ultimately, when I saw the design MJ created, it was spot on - beyond what I could have described. She totally knew how to translate my jumbled thoughts into something beautiful. My design was $2k+, and it took just under 3 hours. MJ is serious about her craft. She was very focused, not too much chitchat. She has a different healing regimen than I had heard before, but it healed incredibly well. I took advantage of the free touch up (within 6 months). It only took 10 minutes. Worth it! Pay as much as you can in cash to avoid the credit card fee. Highly recommend for geometric, organic, moody, and elegant designs. read more

I got my first tattoo by MJ, and I'm so happy that I made the decision to do so. I came into the initial consultation with a very general idea of what I wanted (cherry blossoms), but MJ was able to transform my idea into a beautiful piece of art, weaving cherry blossoms into different flowers across multiple branches. On the day of the tattoo session, she gave me two different drawings to choose from, and the overall process was very professional and seamless. I highly recommend baneul. MJ's fine line tattoos are truly intricate and one of a kind. read more

MJ is one of the most talented artists I have ever met. Everything about my processes (I have gotten 3 tattoos from her) has been wonderful. I am so bad at making decisions and come to her with super vague ideas, and BOY does she deliver. She is also such a sweet person and it is truly a pleasure to get tattoos from her. Very fair pricing, wonderful conversations, and super personal! I am so happy that she finally has her own shop that is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. If you want truly quality art, I could NOT give higher recommendations than this place! read more

I chose MJ for my first tattoo. She has a great spot! It's bright and very welcoming. Her and her staff are very pleasant and accommodating plus she is an amazing artist. I came in from out of town and was only going to be here in the city for a day. She was nice enough to do my consultation and appointment in the same night and she absolutely crushed this tattoo for me. I'll definitely be back to get my second piece! read more

In March 2021, I got my first tattoo at BaNeul. I found them through instagram and shot them an email as soon as I saw the artist's work. As someone who didn't know much about tattoos or the process, MJ, Soohee and Hide made the experience easy, comfortable and fun. Let me start by saying the space is pristinely clean. The decor is so inviting and quaint in the best ways. The shop is also located in an amazing area. I went in for my consult where MJ helped me decide the general placement, size and color scheme of my tattoo. We went over pricing, the deposit and scheduled the day which they were able to fit me in for quickly. The day of, I was very nervous. Hide had me sign the consent form and Soohee asked if I wanted any water or food while I waited for MJ to set up. MJ made me feel so comfortable and worked so quickly. She was able to exactly copy my reference photo and asked multiple times throughout my tattoo how I was feeling and if I needed a break. My tattoo is exactly how I envisioned it. Before leaving, MJ gave me an aftercare checklist. Upon following the recommendations of the shop, my tattoo healed quickly and beautifully. The fine line work, colors and placement is gorgeous. I cannot wait to go back and get another tattoo from this studio. Thank you guys! read more

I first heard about MJ through a close friend of mine and since it was going to be my first tattoo I wanted it to be perfect in every way so I knew MJ was the person to go to. During our first consultation she was very genuine and she took me step by step how the process would go. On the day of the appointment, although I was very nervous, having conversations with MJ calmed me down a lot and it made the experience much more fun! She is very talented and passionate about her work and mostly she is very easy to talk to. For anyone that is looking for the perfect place and person to get their tattoo done 10/10 I would recommend BaNeul and MJ! read more
