She responded very quickly between messages and we were able to get a mockup quickly. She was also enthusiastic about the consultation process and took an interest in the artistry as well. Also very kind: when I reached out about my worries with the second skin after sleeping in a hostel and my incoming plane ride home, she asked me to come in the next day to clean and reapply the second (maybe third at this point?) skin. I was so disappointed with this place! I guess you just need to do thorough research and shop around. After weeks of doing some correspondence, I go in there, after explaining what I wanted, and MJ tried to upsell me from a flash design, quoting me $3,500 for one tattoo. Are you crazy? Keep in mind, I only want a simple elegant flower with a stem and petals. This is an example of someone who does not know how to read a client, and therefore comes off pretentious beyond belief. I didn't find her to be particularly nice, welcoming or impressive in her demeanor with me. There are so many talented artists in NYC, it literally took me under 2 hours to find another iconic tattoo studio, open for 20 years, with an amazing female artist, who consulted with me right there with so much more professionalism. And she is actually booked out till early June. I felt confident this woman could do exactly what I want, for both my new tattoo, and my oldest tattoo, which I want rejuvenated. MJ was a disappointing consultation and certainly didn't seem to want my business. And I could hardly even understand her anyway. Completely ridculous, overpriced and a waste of time. BaNeul Tattoo is a solid shop. I actually found MJ on Instagram and instantly fell in love with her work. Coincidentally, BaNeul actually just opened shop that week so I sent over an email and had a consult appointment for a custom piece 48 roughly hours later. For my consult, we discussed art direction, sizing/placement, and budget. Love that she whipped out her iPad Pro to start brainstorming on the spot. Walking in I fully expected a few week/month wait, but they were able to squeeze me in for the next weekend. In order to secure an appointment there is a deposit which will go towards the overall cost. Typical tattoo shop stuff. Since they were super busy, I wasn't able to see the different options until the day of my appointment. Not ideal, but understandable for a new shop still trying to figure their stuff out. In terms of feedback, they could've done a better job communicating final price. Since my appointment was on a Sunday I had to run to the ATM and hope I could take the extra $$$. They quoted a pretty large range and it ended up being at the very tip top of it. I'm totally cool with paying for quality though so it wasn't a big deal. Just a detail that could've been handled better. This is the largest piece I have and I kid you not the least painless so far. She sent me home with a saniderm bandage that I kept on for the length that she instructed. I'm glad I did because the healing process was wicked fast: no peeling, discomfort, or issues. I think what helps is MJ's meticulous post session guide. She sends you home with a cute little kit filled with detailed instructions, healing ointment, and lil' stickers. I've been following MJ for a while before I finally decided to get my first tattoo. Her linework is beautiful and precise and exactly the style I love, so it was a no-brainer that I would go to her for my first one! I explained to her my vision and she was super accommodating in breathing it into life. While flowers are sort of a "basic" tattoo, she made it unique and amazing and since it's so meaningful to me, I'll gladly wear it for the rest of my life! The tattoo process was great too. She was always reassuring me even when it felt like it was too much and she took her time to make it detailed and incredible! I got two tattoos within 5 months of each other at BaNeul (Oct 2019 and Feb 2020). I love this studio and the fine line work of the tattoo artists. These were my 4th and 5th tattoos. My first floral band was an original design by MJ and it is gorgeous and she accomplished the exact kind of watercolor coloring that I wanted. My second tattoo of ginkgo leaves was an original design by Soohee and I barely felt it and the lines are so soft and subtle. I absolutely love both of my tattoos. Both MJ and Soohee listened to the general idea of what I wanted, and both came up with gorgeous designs. They then took those designs and tattooed the outlines - but the most amazing part is the creativity of their shading. The shop is beautiful with lots of plants and warmness. They take good care of you while you're there, with an initial design consultation, plus a great little kit with aftercare instructions. And they'll send you the photos they take so you have some nice photos too! They are located in prime real estate in Greenwich/West Village so their prices reflect both the cost of doing business in Manhattan, and ensure the artists (hopefully) make a liveable wage. They price based on job, not by the hour, but based on my two tattoos, it averaged to about $500/hour. A bit expensive, but it's a lifetime investment in high quality art. I still lust after all their work on Instagram. I wish I could afford to get a tattoo from each artist there because they all have great skill and style. The tattoo is pretty but not really worth the $1800 I was charged for two one-hour sessions (perhaps would've been less paintful if MJ didn't rush through? Not sure why an upper thigh tattoo would hurt exponentially more than an armpit...then again I've never had bruising from any tattoos before or since either!) I chalked the price up to me not finalizing the design until the appointment but also found email communication subpar and confusing. Even when I asked for a bolder line of color as she was finishing up the second session - so it would stand out on top of the b/w design from the first session (seeing in the red of the second pic)- I got a lot of pushback. Honestly didn't feel comfortable coming back for touch-ups. I'll just get somewhere else to make it what I want. BTW this was my 5th our of 7 tattoos. Yes I got TWO tattoos after this, which was why I felt the need to review such subpar work for that kinda $$$. I know its not customary to review a tattoo shop so low, but I came across a friend of a friend who had also gone to MJ and was overcharged and underimpressed as well, so I feel the need to put it out there. BaNeul Tattoo seemed like a fairly clean place with really good plant vibes. The staff was nice and the artists are talented. Unfortunately for me I had a different experience - this would be my twelfth tattoo, so I am no rookie. After getting my whole forearm tattooed, I contracted Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (or MRSA) a strain of staphylococcus aureus, which is quite dangerous and painful. I got my security deposit back because I wasn't going to finish my tattoo there but I spent $1,500 for a scarred tattoo. This place is not as sanitized as it appears. I found MJ through Instagram and was coming to NYC for a family trip I wanted to get this tattoo done for awhile now. Got a stomach/rib piece by Hide. Upon entering the shop, I found it to be very welcoming and clean. Bright natural lighting with lots of life. They were very accommodating to what I wanted and super nice. Hide got me in the seat and started promptly. I heard the ribs usually hurts but it wasn't that bad. In March 2021, I got my first tattoo at BaNeul. I found them through instagram and shot them an email as soon as I saw the artist's work. As someone who didn't know much about tattoos or the process, MJ, Soohee and Hide made the experience easy, comfortable and fun. Let me start by saying the space is pristinely clean. The decor is so inviting and quaint in the best ways. The shop is also located in an amazing area. I went in for my consult where MJ helped me decide the general placement, size and color scheme of my tattoo. We went over pricing, the deposit and scheduled the day which they were able to fit me in for quickly. The day of, I was very nervous. Hide had me sign the consent form and Soohee asked if I wanted any water or food while I waited for MJ to set up. MJ made me feel so comfortable and worked so quickly. She was able to exactly copy my reference photo and asked multiple times throughout my tattoo how I was feeling and if I needed a break. My tattoo is exactly how I envisioned it. I get compliments from strangers all the time on her tattoos, and her combination of line work, coloring, and creativity is pretty special. Beyond the artwork MJ is just easy to work with. She works fast but is never stressed or uptight.
