This place came well-recommended. The food is middle of the road at best and the mofongo was not correctly made. Monfongo is fried plantains that are mashed together with stock, and other spices. This was a boiled mush. The veggies were not fresh either (we do not grow broccoli in PR and it doesn't go with mofongo!) and mofongo doesn't get served with cheese either. If you are looking for a casual, touristy place with foods that are closer to what you're used to in the mainland US, this place is great. I will say, service was very good. This restaurant was amazing! My group went here twice. On our first visit we ordered the basil garlic bread and fish tacos. Our second time around we ordered the chicken mofango, two strawberry piña coladas, and and a caramelized banana dessert topped with vanilla ice cream. Hope was an amazing waitress! My parents like the food because it's kind of Asian style. But they forced 20% tip and wish you pay tip again. Mussels in appetizer and seafood paella are not fresh, half of them are not open. They charged for hot water(not bottle). Other places are more friendly I think. read more

We stopped here for lunch on Sunday. My burger was great. Ceviche was a little "tired" but tasty. Fried banana with ice cream and mini fried empty empanadas (were they supposed to be empty?) were nice, it's a large portion even for 2 people to share :) Thumbs up for the beach view - priceless! Was in Vieques for 5-6 days and we ended up going to Bananas 3 times! Love love love the vibe and the staff here. We loved the Mahi bites, escargot (gorgeously garlicky), plantains, mussels were interesting Thai flavor not our favorite but still good, fish tacos and the ahi tuna over anything (even a Caesar salad). Also tried a virgin pina colada passion fruit. Yummy! I usually don't eat fries but their fries are so comforting. Haven't tried any desserts but heard their gluten free chocolate torte is amazing. Well, this is the place where most tourists hang out. It is as "American" as it gets. Burgers, fries, sandwiches, fried chicken tenders. Nuff said! You see where I am going with this review? Some people may, in fact, like regular bar food. You may want to eat bar food after eating mofongo and tostones for 2 straight days... you know, for variety? We only had drinks here. The menu did not look appetizing to me. I am not eating a hamburger when I am surrounded by restaurants serving fresh fish. Drinks were well made. Our margaritas were excellent. The man ordered chicken tenders for a snack. He ate them all. They were probably good. I didn't care. The bar faces the ocean. Locals hang out at the bar, and we even got to meet a celebrity named Fonzi. He was nice and friendly, and one of the guys in his posse was super hot. If I could give zero stars, I would. I've never seen such a disrespect by a "manager" in my life for starters. Before I get there, let's start with the service. Waitress was okay, didn't tell us her name and didn't write our order down. For a group of 17, that's a problem. I ordered a mango colada which I never received. Our food arrived and was very, VERY under seasoned. My wife ordered a burger that came so raw you'd think they just seared the meat while the cow was alive. I will say the fish and chips was good, although missing some salt. Another person in our party didn't even receive the second part of their order. Nobody was happy with their meal (minus myself). Next comes the even worse part. My father in law found hair in his food! Gross!! So he complained to the waitress who said she'd take care of it. NEVER DID. Plate with hair sat there the whole time. The waitress said she'd take the meal off the bill, NEVER DID. So we asked for a manager. A large man who said he was the cook then said he was the manager/owner told the waitress to not make any changes, we have to pay for the food. My father in law was not disrespectful, yet the owner has the audacity to disrespect the customer! Then he threatened to call the police!!! Never in my life have I experienced such horrible treatment at a restaurant. Poor food, poor service, poor treatment. Nobody should ever come here. EVER. Bananas was our shelter during our first tropical rain of our stay. Coming back from a long, exhausting (it IS exhausting, whatever you may say) 4-hour at the beach we were hungry and thirsty. I welcomed my piña colada with open arms. Come to me, baaaaa-by!!!!! There was an interesting mix of people in there, tourists and locals alike. Sundays on the island are super lively and extremely busy - a great opportunity to mix up with the people from the main island who come to have a good time on Vieques. The fare is very bar oriented, with a couple of 'island inspired' options. Try the fried bananas with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce, maybe an order of the tostones and sit down and enjoy. This place was recommended by one of the "new" locals we met whileon th wisland of Vieques. At first when we walked in we were greated very graciously. Unfortunately we missed happy hour by a few minuets. The food was phenomenal. I would highly auggest going for the food. If you are going with a geoup of 8+ dont even waste your time. Another great (and frankly, underrated) place in Vieques to grab a bite and drink on your way back from the beach. Bananas is definitely on island time, as other reviewers have commented on - service can be slow as I only saw one guy doubling as bartender and waiter. The food here was excellent - my fiancee and I actually ate here 2-3 times over the course of the week. Menu highlights included the coconut crusted fish sandwich (homemade tarter sauce!) and the chicken sandwich with pineapple and caramelized onions. Worst moffongo I've ever had in my life. I grew up vacationing in PR visiting family and eating yummy moffongo in Pinones, Racines, Luquillo, etc. The moffongo was so greasy and disgusting at Banana. Got a well done burger, with mayo on the bun.....told our wonderful server this was definitely not a rare burger......meanwhile, my husband has his lunch, which was wonderful, and he was chowing through. Got a burger, mayo and ketchup on the side, the meat is still grey, the chef comes out, yelling at me, tearing my burger apart with his bare hands.....NOT a rare burger.....I have gastric issues following major surgery, need a certain amount of fat and moisture. Felt horrible for the wonderful server caught in the middle of this thing! She was wonderful! Sent the destroyed burger back. No comp. left a great tip for server. So sad! This restaurant is needed on the malecon. You can't do a rare burger, just tell me! I do not need the "chef" to yell at me! Lunch was ok, not even super memorable...I had...oh, pulled pork tacos. They were good, but not great. Sweetie had a chicken dish that was fine. Their bar has more variety than some of the other lunch spots on the Malecon....but it wasn't worth a repeat experience. We had drinks and tried to have dessert there on one of our last nights. The second time I ordered the eggplant sandwich. I hate mayonnaise and tartar sauce and anything in between so when I ordered my sandwich, I asked the server if there was any sauce on it. She said "No, there's just cheese on it". Perhaps it was my fault for not being more explicit but when the sandwich arrived, there was a mayonnaise-y tartar sauce between the baguette and the cheese running the full length of the sandwich. The taste turned my stomach and I couldn't finish my sandwich. The fries that came with the sandwich were decent. Service is slow, food is mediocre. read more
