Seafood Curry Laska with Ramen Noodles
    Pauline C.

What We Ordered - Seafood Curry Laska with Ramen Noodles - Seafood Tom Yum with Vermicelli We really wished we ate here sooner! We dismissed this place when we first landed in Calgary, big mistake. We thought we had pretty good Asian food back home but Banana Leaf is amazing!!! They don't mellow out the flavors or heat like most places do for American taste buds. We were super surprised how spicy it was. Service is good. They came quickly when they heard the table next to us drop chopsticks. Highly recommend!! CASH ONLY!

Gosh! Had to have my laksa fix today! Ordered for pick up from Banana Leaf: - Seafood Laksa - mix of yellow and vermicelli noodles swimming in the spicy laksa broth, topped with different seafood like prawns, fish, fishball, calamari and other delicious items like boiled egg, deep fried tofu. Must eat with sambal! - Curry Fishball - fantastic curry sauce doused over deep fried fishballs. Great with rice! - Grilled Fish in Banana Leaf - oh, this brings me back to Singapore! That rempah sauce is to-die-for! Comes with a fried egg, white rice and salted peanuts. Banana Leaf now accepts credit cards.

I think banana leaf offers one of the better laksas in the city but still nothing special. Only takes cash or debit! A small hole in the wall restaurant in the NE. 3.5/5 Got the beef laksa and the chicken hainanese rice. The beef was tender and the soup was good and homey but it's a bit greasy. You definitely feel bit slugglish after eating it. The portion is big though and it's really filling. The hainanese chicken rice was okay. Good, but not awesome. The chicken was a bit too oily and a little bit rubbery? But still recent. The rice was nothing special. Sauces were okay as well. I would have liked a classic soy ginger sauce with it but only came with the ginger oil and chili sauce. Prices are bit expensive $15 ish for each but not terrible and the portions are on the larger side

This place feels so close to home I'm so glad to have my cravings satisfied after moving away from Singapore to Calgary 7 months ago. This spot is definitely a hidden gem for an authentic South East Asian cuisine -- the Nasi Lemak tasted very authentic and rich in flavour! Laksa is their claim to fame on the menu so I'm definitely coming back to try that out next. Follow my IG: @annthefoodie

    Beef curry laksa

Came here for lunch just past noon after a meeting. It's a smaller restaurant and was busy but we got a table for 3 in under 10 minutes just. If you're looking for ambience this is not the place for you, but the food was great! Service was quick and on point. I recall it being reasonably priced but I didn't pay so I'm not sure (many thanks to the lovely lady who covered me!) All three of us ordered beef laksa and an order of roti canai to share. The roti was decent with a lovely creamy curry sauce to dip. The roti itself was nicely crispy on the outside, but I would have preferred a chewier, moister inside myself. Everyone enjoyed it though! The laksa was a very rich and creamy type of laksa - if you prefer the more tangy brothy version of laksa this may not be for you, but I loved it! The yellow noodles were springy and the beef was fairly tender. It's a pretty large portion so I took the rest to go... plenty of broth so I might make more noodles at home to stretch it! Overall, I quite enjoyed the food here! I'll be back to try more :)

    Seafood laksa

Went here based on a friend's recommendation and got the seafood laksa with yellow noodles. It was great! They packed it with so much protein. The broth was flavorful and spicy (might be a bit too spicy for some). I honestly liked this more than the one I had in Singapore. Also, it's not too far off from the airport. Would highly recommend!

    beef rendang

Great food! I ordered beef rendang and it was close to what I had in Sg. And it's spicy too! Husband ordered Nasi Lemak and he was happy with it except that the sambal had humongous slices of onions, but then again, it didnt affect the taste. Chicken satay was great, very juicy and the satay sauce was good. I just wish they had teh tahrik! Saw Milo Dinosaur in the menu

    Hainanese Chicken and Rice

Chill was in the air, so some hot Laksa was on my mind! We had never been to Banana Leaf, and wanted to give it a try. Success... Great food, great service, great restaurant.  We came after the lunch rush, but the restaurant was still full.  It was definitely worth the short wait.  They asked us to wait outside and called when the table was ready (very good). They inspected our Vaccine Passports, and everyone else that came in after (very good). They cleaned thoroughly between guests, and spaced the tables out really well.  Thanks for that. The meals came out very quickly. We had the Seafood Laksa and the Hainanese Chicken & Rice. Both were wonderful. The Laksa was spicy, rich and delicious, with big chunks of fish, squid, shrimp, fish balls, tofu.  I am a big Laksa fan, and this one was awesome.  Big dish too, could easily be shared by two people.  The Hainanese Chicken was perfectly cooked, steaming and tender. Such a beautiful dish.  Way too big for my wife, we took home half for dinner. Service was friendly and fast, the two young men that served us were terrific. The room is cute and spotlessly clean, prices are very good.  We will be back to try the rest of the menu.  Thanks!

We were craving Laksa and Roti and we were in the north of Calgary. So we decided to go to Banana Leaf! Came here many times before and it would be packed around 6pm, but today at 6pm it did not seem too bad. I had to ordered the milk tea with grass jelly! if you enjoy milk tea you will like it here! For appy. we had the roti cani and taiwanese chicken (garlic one). The roti was nice and flaky and with the 'curry' like sauce, it was the perfect match! For the chicken, if you LOVE garlic you will enjoy this dish! (had garlic breath the whole night) The chicken was still juicy and not dry (i believe they use dark meat). Last but not least the Laksa! The laksa here is more of a creamy curry soup base. We ordered the beef brisket, the meat was tender and soft and the curry soup had the perfect spice to it. You get to pick yellow noodles or vermicelli. I enjoyed the yellow noodle as it gives a better bite. The Laksa also had bean sprout and deep fried tofu. It was very satisfying! Note they only take cash or debit. Place is a bit small so come early for some yummy food! You can ask for a bit mild in spice but it may still be spicy if you don't eat spicy food.

Just here for the Bubble Tea
    David O.

Bubble Tea: The bubble tea is good here. They have good flavour options. I got the Taro Coconut bubble tea with coconut jelly and it was really good. They dont serve regular pearls just red bean jelly, grass jelly and coconut jelly. So if you are looking for something with more options then your regular places Id reccomend this one.

Food: * The Hainanese Chicken rice was delicious. Everything about is was reminiscent to what we get at home. The rice, soya sauce, chili blend and chicken were all delicious and so flavorful. The aroma of ginger, garlic and steamed chicken was to die for and authentic. * The nasi lemak combo had a huge portion. Rice, egg, anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, sambal and a huge side of chicken curry. I was in heaven after this dish. I even had half a portion for dinner that evening. The sambal was very authentic and spicy! The chicken curry was extremely flavorful and delicious. It all worked together as how a great Nasi Lemak usually does. * The curry chicken with roti was also very good. The same curry chicken from the Nasi Lemak combo but with Roti Canai instead of rice. It all worked together and was appetizing. You can get either curry chicken or curry beef for the roti as well. * The Curry Laksa was amazing. You have a choice between seafood, chicken, beef, fish or beef balls, or a vegetable laksa. Also, you can pick between yellow or vermicelli noodles. I went with the seafood and yellow noodle Laksa. My mom is from the part of Malaysia that specializes in Laksa and because of this she is an expert laksa maker and I am forever biased. However, the laksa here is delicious as ever. Although not my mothers level of laksa, it definitely is something I would order again and again. Great level of spice and extremely flavorful with spices. I also ordered a side of sambal to go with the laksa. This gives it an extra kick to the dish. 5/5 Full Review: www.thelocalepicure.ca Instagram: @thelocalepicure

    Matcha bubble tea (#56) ($4.50)
    Jonny M.

Oh Banana Leaf, how I wish you existed in Edmonton. I've been to Banana Leaf more times than some of my Calgarian friends! If that ain't a stamp of approval, then I don't know what is. Seriously, one of my favourite places in Cowtown! We came for a late Sunday Mother's Day brunch (sans mothers!) and it was busy. Wait time was about 25 minutes to get a table for four but as always, totally worth the wait. People eat and go so turnover is fairly quick. Hurray for Asians being considerate when it comes to eating. The two waitresses/daughters run the front and are always excellent. Hours are good - don't forget they're closed Monday! No reservations on weekends. Everything on the menu is bomb. I have yet to try anything here that I haven't liked. Roti canai is a must. The bah kut teh (#14) is actually delicious. Very medicinal. You also can't go wrong with the traditional nasi lemak. A ton of people ordered it while we were waiting and it looked soooo good. Trip #1 - Mango green tea (#42) ($4.50) - super light, refreshing and not overpowering, a good thing in my books. - Mango slush (#56) ($5.50) - it's an extra $0.75 for coconut jelly, red bean or grass jelly. I've never had the slush (frozen fruit) before so we decided to try the mango with coconut jelly. Best decision ever. So fresh! You can taste the mango pulp. Can't wait to try the other slush flavours. - Roti canai (#6) ($4.50) - always a must order. Crispy, flaky, tender, melt in your mouth deliciousness. Dip into the curry sauce and the roti elevates to another level. I seriously need to figure out how to make this sauce at home. - Deep fried tofu with garlic and green onion (#8) ($6.50) - my sis loves this appetizer as she can get it cooked to accommodate her gluten intolerance. Always comes out piping hot with a slight crunchy exterior but oh so soft, silky smooth inside. Litaly said this was the best tofu he's eaten. - Curry chicken rice (#15) ($12.50) - we decided to try something new and got the curry chicken rice plate. Rice with a cooked egg on top, peanuts (addictively good), cucumber and curry chicken. The chicken was super tender and flavourful. It has two spicy icons on the menu but we didn't find it packing much heat. But flavour is spot on so it's all good. - Deep fried chicken with Thai lemon sauce rice (#19) ($12.50) - another new dish we tried but requested without the deep fried batter. I actually really liked the sauce as you get a light sweetness and pinch of acidity. Stir fried onion and green onions top things off. - Seafood tom yum soup (#24) ($12.50) - tom yum came out last but it was great. Lemongrass comes to the forefront immediately which I love! Broth is fragrant and complex with a good mixture of seafood. - Curry beef brisket laksa (#26) ($12.95) - this is what you come to Banana Leaf for. You have to order at least one of the laksa's - you honestly can't go wrong. I think I've tried them all by the now. The beef brisket is super tender but still retains a nice bite. Creamy, rich, spicy, I could eat this bowl every day. I'd also probably be fat but it would be totally worth it. Trip #2 - Mango bubble tea (#53) ($4.50) - mango bubble tea with grass jelly. Even though these are powder flavoured, they're still delicious. Only place I'd go to get powder bubble tea. - Matcha bubble tea (#56) ($4.50) - we've had the match with red beans many times. I don't know what it is about red beans but it adds great texture and sweetness. - Spicy glutinous rice roll (#2) ($6.50) - finally got to try their spicy glutinous rice roll! These are only on the menu once in a blue moon. I wasn't blown away but they were good. Reminds me of joong (Chinese rice wrapped in lotus leaves). - Roti canai (#6) ($4.50) - another roti canai ordered. Every table will have one. - Deep fried tofu with garlic and green onion (#8) ($6.50) - this is always ordered when we come here. My sis can't get enough. - Deep fried crispy chicken nuggets (#10) ($9.95) - Taiwanese style with your choice of spice salt or garlic and onion. Obviously, we went with the spicy option. I never get to order this because my sis can't eat it but we were with two other friends so I finally got to try it! It's even better than the deep fried tofu, if that's possible. - Grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf and rice (#21) ($13.95) - if you have time, order the grilled fish. It takes about 25 to 30 minutes to prepare but the wait is well worth it. Bursting with flavour and incredibly tender. - Curry beef brisket laksa (#26) ($12.95) - the broth was much more creamier. Still so much depth, complexity and flavour in one bowl. The beef brisket is tender and generous in portion. - Hainanese chicken laksa (#27) ($12.50) - The Hainanese chicken laksa is just as good, if not better. You get a variety of chicken pieces with tofu, a hard boiled egg, etc. Banana Leaf is the best. The only place to go to get your Taiwanese/Malaysian cravings satisfied. Don't forget cash or debit only!

    crispy Taiwanese chicken yum

We were a little skeptical based on the not so good reviews but we felt that the menu seemed interesting enough to give it a try and we are so glad that we did. Every single dish that we ordered was a hit. We ordered roti canai and Taiwanese style crispy chicken nuggets for appetizers. The roti canai was so so so good, the roti itself was crispy from outside, soft and tender from inside and the curry was creamy and spicy and delicious. The chicken tenders were so crispy and moist and tender from inside. For main we got Seafood laksa and Nasi Lemak combo. The seafood laksa was really good and the seafood was perfectly cooked. Nasi lemak had amazing delicious chicken curry with extremely tender chicken and the spicy sambal anchovies was also so good. Everything was perfect. Another thing that I liked that they didn't "westernize" the spice level. Everything was perfectly spicy and I feel authentic. I am surprised how this place doesn't have better reviews, maybe they don't have consistency but everything was delicious for us and in-fact it was one of the best Malaysian food that we had in North America.

The fish balls and broth had great flavour. It also was quite large so I suggest one order of roti by itself and one with the fish balls. I ordered the Beef & Chicken Special Rice Platter. Now, I was famished but this platter was huge! I had to take some home. The platter comes with wontons, spring rolls, bean curd, boiled egg, some pickled vegetables and rice. I also upgraded my drink to the Susa Kacang Leong Fung (soya milk with grass jelly). Everything tasted great - the chicken was very tender. My wife and kids shared a custom noodle bowl. They chose seafood as topping, Laksa (coconut curry seafood soup) as the base, and egg noodle. The broth and toppings were delicious and a good size. Staff were friendly but it does get busy and so things can be a bit slow - you may have to flag someone if you need to. Family enjoyed the food and will come back.

Vegetarian food can be so versatile and it's no longer just tofu and greens, although a lot of mock meat is still made with tofu or soy protein components. I went on a vegetarian diet for 30 days and it actually went pretty well! I did not stuff myself with carbs this time around but I'll say this... tofu does not fill you up for long! And I don't like beans. So I would fail miserably if I were to give up meat for life. There's not many vegetarian restaurants in town, but one such one would be Ambrosia Veggie House, who serves Pan Asian Chinese Vegetarian Food. They are both vegan and vegetarian, and has a pretty vast menu! I find their location interesting as it's located on the side of Avatamsaka Sagely Monastery (華嚴聖寺) - I'm not sure if the monastery opened the restaurant. My family decided to try out the restaurant with me. Here's what we ordered: Spring Rolls - $4.75 I didn't try these but I imagine they were just simply stuffed with vegetables. Served with plum dipping sauce. Satay Skewers - $6.75 These were made with very firm soy nuggets and was on the spicy side! Crunchy Seaweed Sticks - $8.75 These were seaweed wrapped firm soy nuggets, deep fried, and coated in a sweet and sour sticky sauce. I enjoyed the chewiness of this. Mashed Potato Tofu Pockets - $12.75 Bean curd sheets stuffed with mashed potato and then deep fried - they were nicely flavorful but the bean curd sheets were way too chewy. I think if they can use something else, like a puff pastry to get that nice, melt in your mouth texture, then this would be a lot easier and enjoyable to eat. Jade Rolls - $12.75 I'm no stranger to this. These are vegetable stuffed bean curd rolls which I used to eat a lot of. I love that savoury gravy that atop it! Sweet and Sour Bean Curd Rolls - $12.75 This is pretty close to the real thing with all the right flavors and vegetables that normally come in a sweet and sour pork dish! Lettuce Wrap - $14.75 I thought the faux meat mixture was done really well (tasted really good on rice), but was a bit taken back with the five lettuce leaves they provided. Yes, five. We had eight people - six adults minus my two kids. I'm pretty sure lettuce is cheap... Stir Fried Mixed Greens - $10.75 A plate of Shanghai bok choy sauteed with a good amount of wok "hei". Eight Treasures Tofu Hotpot - $14.75 This was kind of bare. They didn't substitute anything for the "meat" so it was just tofu and vegetables. Shanghai Style Chow Mein - $10.75 Your standard Shanghai noodles, minus the meat. Assorted Fried Rice - $10.75 A simple vegetable fried rice with faux meat bits. This was particularly tasty for some reason, and my brother's gf mentioned that it was fried with a lot of oil... ah, that's probably why. And it also had really good wok "hei" too! This was actually a very tasty meal, but it is on the pricier side as portions were also on the small side. However, it takes a lot more effort to turn something non meat to make it taste somewhat like meat!
