I love Malaysian Thai Singaporean fusion! It's one of my favorites. As soon as I first saw Banana Leaf at Rockwell's Power Plant and then Century Mall, I knew I had to find out if it's the same as back home! They have roti, they have kang kung belachan, Hainan chicken rice OMG yass we are eating lunch here! Seating was full Saturday afternoon but we were able to order food while waiting. As a friend says, awesome-sauce! Surprised to see no plates to eat off; use a clean square of banana leaf instead. We started off with thick chewy roti canai, thinner than fried naan. Yellow curry is not included, but for 30 pesos (less than a dollar) they give a big portion, enough to pour over rice after the roti's gone!
In all, we ordered a feast for 8:
*3 roti canai with yellow curry dip
*2 chicken satay (4 piece each)
*Pandan fried chicken (4 pieces wrapped in leaves)
*Rendang chicken
*Malaysian (yellow) chicken curry with potatoes
*3 kang kung w/ sambal sauce (belachan--water spinach in shrimp paste)
*stir fried dry Oat Prawns Singaporean style
*Penang fried rice with salted fish & chicken
*2 whole fried tilapia w/ Assam Sambal side sauce
*Hainan chicken rice & white rice
Ahh my kind of meal! Their Hainan rice isn't yellow, but still tastes great. Penang salted fish fried rice was delicious! Kang kung belachan is sautéed just as I remember, excellent veggie dish. Sis loved the yellow potato chicken curry, seems identical to the roti curry. Too bad there are only five oat prawns, fried to perfection. Pandan fried chicken was wrapped in pandan leaves, had a sweet flavor I wasn't expecting, kinda threw me off. Rendang chicken was good with its savory sauce, but mildly spicy yellow curry stood out most. Didn't try the tilapia, but Mom enjoyed it.
Too full to order dessert! We would've gotten the fried bananas with ice cream, but saved room for macarons and Tsujiri matcha cones over at Rockwell. Good customer service and the guy working the podium was clear in repeating our order, also gave useful feedback on dish portion. read more
