Most insurance plans won't cover the full amount since this place charges higher than market for their services, so expect to pay. They seemed nice, but their service was poor. They incorrectly diagnosed my girlfriends cause tooth pain...we had the issue taken care elsewhere and thank goodness we did. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone read more

#1 quoted me a price. When work was completed the cost was almost 3 times the amount of the quote ! #2 after my first visit i was called, emailed and emailed and called and emailed almost to the point of harassment at 3 times a week as they wanted to do cleanings. I explained finally that I had a long time regular dentist and they had been away which is how I ended up there ( Balsam ) thank but no thank you. #3 I have anxiety problems and after a tooth had broke, my regular dentist was at a conference. I was very stressed as to whether my tooth could be saved so I reluctantly went back to Balsam Dental and practically begging them to please take a quick look ( assessment ) to see if mybtooth could be saved. I was told they were on break. I asked if they might squeeze me in to just take a 5 minute look just to see if my tooth would be saved. The receptionist went to ask them. She came and asked my name, then came back and told me NO !...NO ? I then asked since they were opened until 9 which was nearly 10 hours away could they please take 5 minutes to do sn assessment. After.learning.my name I was told NO, they couldn't squeeze me I'm. Really ? They couldn't take 5 minutes off their break ? They couldn't get me in, in the next 10 hours or 5 minutes off their break, after charging me nearly 3 times what I was quoted ???. I have lived in The Beaches area gor over 65 years. I was appalled at tjis treatment and uncaring by put what I believe to be ego over the care of a patient. I will never ever go to Balsam Dental again !!! I have been in the Beaches area 65 years and have never been treated with such uncaring distain by any Healthcare, doctor or dentist!!!I am sharing this awful experience to everyone and anyone who will listen. I went to this dentist for the first time few days ago, chose to go here since they have good reviews. I was in a lot of pain couple of days before I visited and wanting to get a consultation to figure out what's going on. There was confusion about my appointment even after I told the receptionist over email of why I wanna come in for consultation prior to the appt. They insisted they have me for new patient so I need to go thru the service which is cleaning, Xray and consultation. They told me there and then it would cost $500. Wasn't aware of this, I told them I can't do cleaning today since I'm in 10/10 in pain. There was a lot of waiting and then they did the X-ray. Waited again. Then the dentist came in, I thought I would get a run down of the X-ray review but, I didn't. She started poking the area where it hurts, i told her I can't pin point it because everywhere seems to hurt. Most pain is at the upper left corner tho. She concluded that it's my wisdom tooth coming out and ended the consultation there. I asked a couple of questions before she leaves, if there are other tooth that's problematic on the same side, she said it all looks good. Just need the wisdom tooth removed. In total, consultation only lasted total 5mins. This is not including the long waiting time on the chair: They told me at the desk that I'll have to pay up front and they'll send the receipts to my insurance, which is fine. I wish they told me this upfront tho. They made a referral to an extraction clinic, told them it would be best if they can say it's urgent and expedite since I'm in a lot of pain. Dentist gave me prescription for the pain and says they are not sure when I'm gonna get a call so just keep taking the meds til they run out and wait for the call. I paid total of $220 for the unsatisfactory service. Had to email them back to send me Xray copies and receipt. Haven't heard back from the referral after 2days and I'm still in a lot of pain. Told me to just keep taking the meds. I ended up directly contacting a clinic (TEMFS) to book a wisdom tooth removal and they told me the X-rays from Balsam Dental were no good and they would need a set of better X-rays. Doesn't even show my wisdom tooth area. I am scheduled right away for the extraction after the call. Basically, I could've totally skipped the step of visiting Balsam and not pay more than average dental fees just for a 5-min consultation and some X-rays that are no good. The staff are nice but I didn't find them attentive. Also, the fee is higher than standard and i don't think it's fair. I expected more clarity and info from them, but sadly not provided during the service. I had high hopes and really wanted to like this clinic, hoping I can come in often since I'm close by, but NO. I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

The neighbourhood has been forever changed. The new owners seem to think that they own beyond their property line. I have personally witnessed on two occasions a service technician (one Rogers, one Bell) being berated and bullied for parking their clearly marked service truck in the alley partially obstructing the dental offices driveway. (not because the dental office parking lot was full and there was little chance of anyone needing to leave the lot anytime soon, mind you). Even when it is explained that they are on a service call, need to climb the pole at the corner of the property etc the dentist is on them like a yapping dog. Relax, jeez. Today was the straw that broke the camel's back. Parking on Queen was non-existent and a young woman who lives next door to the dental office pulled in to drop something off at home. She hadn't even fully gotten out of the vehicle when the same dentist was barking at her heels. Said he had seen her car there before, had a picture of the plates etc. She tried to explain that it wasn't her and that she was driving a rental vehicle (Zipcar) so it could be anyone; she was just stopping in for a minute. This guy is definitely no Beach neighbour, where you give and take. If it was a chronic issue then he has a right but after hours the only cars in that parking lot are his employees who tend to use it as long term storage lot. Lastly, to prove what a hypocrite this business and staff are; they use the adjoining residential building's pathway as a shortcut to their front door rather than being respectful and using the public sidewalk. There have been several nasty incidents since the change of ownership but these are the ones that make a person say 'well aren't they a nasty piece of work'. Stay clear, someone with an anger issue is the last person you want with their hands in your mouth. (I'd give them no stars for their poor behaviour if I could). read more

This is an outstanding dentistry clinic with great dentists and staff. I had an implant, root canal and multiple fillings done at Balsam Dental over the past several years from 2019 to 2021 (Dr. Cohen and Dr. Shinde). It was excellent, state of the art, dentistry. I am very pleased. I would recommend the Balsam Dental to anyone who is looking for friendly and highly skilled dentistry in Toronto. Balsam Dental never ceases to impress with professionalism, courtesy and dentistry expertise. I have been to their office multiple times for simple fillings or advanced procedures like a dental implant; each was a first-rate experience. The dentists guide you through the procedures you need, and are most appropriate for a given dental condition.  All dentists are excellent. Dr. Cohen is my dentist. He is outstanding. I am lucky to have access to his dentistry expertise, knowledge, and professional skills. Dr. Cohen kindly advised me on the latest dentistry science and clinical approaches available for patients and I felt that I was able to make an informed decision in choosing the right dentistry intervention that will work best for me. I recommend Dr. Cohen very highly. Dental hygienists Sarah and Amber provided me with preventive care over the last 3 years; they are very thoughtful and skilled, and advised on how to maintain and protect my teeth everyday which helped improve my overall health. All in all, I certainly give Balsam Dental 5+ stars as a patient (and I am a scientist by profession), for their human touch to the state of the art dentistry, treatment as well as preventive care, access to the latest dentistry technology, and thoughtful friendly expert clinical care. I had been a patient of Dr. Caplan's since I was very young. Even after we moved out of the area, we continued to make the effort to be a patient of his, as he is wonderful dentist with such a caring staff. After Dr. Caplan retired, I was considering going to a dental clinic closer to where I live. Then one day, my son developed a very painful toothache. I tried calling some of the local clinics, but no one would take him that day (except for one, who wanted us to pay an 'emergency fee'). My son was in so much pain, I just couldn't wait another day or two, so I called Balsam Dental. They were very sympathetic to my situation and told me to bring my son in immediately and that they 'would just make it work'. I was incredibly relieved to hear this from the receptionist. When I arrived, the clinic was busier than I had remembered it. I am not sure how they did it (maybe they called in another dentist to help us), but my son was in a chair inside of 15 minutes of our arrival. Both the staff and doctors were absolutely amazing, and I cannot thank them enough. I highly recommend Balsam Dental. They are every bit as good as I remember, and in some ways, even better. read more

We had been going to Balsam Dental for a very long time before the business was sold to new owners. We were very happy with the previous business model, with the hygienists, with the receptionists, and with Dr. Caplan. We tried this new Balsam Dental for two years after the new owners took over, but have moved on to a new dental practice now. We found the new practice structure to be impersonal and off-putting. We just couldn't muster the same trust in most of the dentists that we had in Dr. Caplan. Exception is Dr. Yoo, who is great. Unfortunately, despite requesting her every time, I always ended up with someone else. Going to the dentist can be a little stressful for people at the best of times, and unfortunately the 'bedside' manners of most of the dentists there now are entirely lacking. read more

I went to Dr Caplan for several years until he retired. I was always very happy with his work and "chair-side" manner. I've never had any issues and recommended him whole heartedly to friends and family. Recently a few new dentists have joined the practice in light of Dr Caplan's departure. It's always a bit anxiety-provoking to see a new dentist but I was delighted that the new staff are carrying on the tradition of quality care. I had a cavity filled this evening by Dr Yu. She had a very gentle touch and performed the entire procedure quickly expertly, explaining the sensations I could expect as she went along (the kindest thing a dentist could do). There was absolutely no pain. Now that the freezing has worn off and I've "tried out" my new tooth surface on some hot/cold/hard foods, I'm happy to say that it's good as new. I went to Dr. Rodney at this location since I was a child, and during the 5 years I took a break from regular check ups (oops!) Rodney retired. I had my first real experience with Dr. Caplan today. I had several fillings done, and he was GREAT. So professional and calming during the whole procedure. I was very afraid of the anesthesia needles, and I didn't feel a thing! He also talks to you the whole time he's working and explains what he's doing and what you're going to feel, which is very reassuring. He has an upbeat demeanor the whole time he's working, and sounds very calm when speaking to you or the nurse assistant; again very reassuring when you're the one being worked on! The work was done quickly and easily, and I felt no pain or discomfort the whole time. I will definitely continue to see Caplan! read more

Like the previous reviewer, I also had many fillings done by Dr Caplan-many years ago. Each time I went he said I needed a new filling -one day I just said no and went to a new dentist who found no indication of a cavity that needed filling. I am very concerned that the work he did was unnecessary especially since the thin shells of teeth surrounding the fillings are beginning to wear away and break resulting in more dental work -the teeth that I have intact are strong and healthy. One dental surgeon asked if there was chlorine in the water where I grew up because I had so many fillings! (Yes we had chlorinated water) I am very angry - I am sure he did not send the X-rays on to my new dentist when my files were requested because they would not show any cavities where he claimed there to be. read more

I went to Dr. Caplan a few years ago and he told me that I had 11 cavaties. I was devastated as I didnt have insurance and the fees were going to be extremely expensive. He filled 4 of my cavaties. He also said that I had to pay for a second X-ray because I waited a few Months between getting cavaties filled. I questioned him about the cavaties because they did not show up on an xray. I also was not comfortable with the way he answered my questions. I felt that the way he answered my questions and concerns were condecending. I decided to go to another dentist. I told my new dentist about the other cavaties that needed to be filled. The new dentist performed an X-ray and found that I had no cavaties. I'll never know If the 4 cavaties I had filled by Dr. Caplan were actual but I've had many dental visits and xrays in the past several years and no dentist has identified the remaining 7 cavaties. read more

I've been a patient of Dr Caplan for about 6 years now, since moving to Ontario and have always been pleased with his professionalism, punctuality, level of expertise and treatment. The entire staff at his office are warm, engaging, very capable in each of their roles and just a pleasure to work with at every stage - from advanced notifications of appointments right through to processing of paperwork for insurance. I had to go to Dr. Caplan for a dental emergency. Despite not having been to a dentist in MANY years, and not being a good flosser, he treated me with care and concern. Not once was I made to feel ashamed or less of a priority due to my poor dental health. I have never had a bad experience since! read more

Dr Caplan has been our family dentist since we moved to Toronto from the UK 4 years ago. He has a great, reassuring manner (my daughter and I are quite nervous patients) and goes out of his way to be helpful. Recently a crown came off one of my front teeth and I felt very self-conscious as a result. Dr Caplan understood this and squeezed me in for an emergency appointment within an hour of me contacting the surgery. I don't usually write reviews on Yelp, but I felt compelled to when I read the only other comment on here, which I do not feel reflects my family's experience of the service we have received at Balsam Dental at all. read more
